The life of my family would begin in a small East Texas town, called Emilee, Texas. In the year of 1892 the small town of Emilee was inhabited by a total of one-hundred and fifty people, but by the early 1900 the total of inhabitants’ was down to fifty. Now the town does not exist, the only sign of proof the town existed is the cemetery which happens to be the oldest cemetery in Texas. This cemetery is where part of my heritage is buried. According to the census of 1860 there were an estimated 182,566 slaves living in Texas. But in 1866 my great grandfather, John Hadnot had the advantage of being born a year after slavery formally ended in Texas, making him the first member of the family to be born free. My sisters and brothers attended the same elementary school, Red Oak Elementary in Warren, Texas. But in 1964 we were integrated and had to attend an all white middle school. In the beginning, my time there was very difficult, it was difficult because as a young child it is not easy going to a school where you are not wanted and dealing with daily racist remarks. Since black teachers and black cooks were not permitted to work in the school, I was the only black student in my grade level while most of the blacks would be bused 12 miles north to an all black school, while participating in school sports I had to deal with racism, but through it all, I made it through. I attend Lorne Morris College in Jacksonville but after the first year I decide to get married, at the time I was only 19 years old when I married my wife of 43 years. We have three wonderful children, my oldest is Martina, Wayne Jr., and Jason my youngest, and we have three grandchildren, my oldest Joshua, Ochea, and the baby Cadence. The Story of an Hour

...Robert Guzman Ms. Pierce English 1301 22 September 2014 My Life in Isolation Well… not in complete isolation; I grew up in Nome, Texas where there is one stop light, a couple of stop signs, open fields filled with Brahmin, and few sane people. With a ratio of human to cow roughly being 1:400 you could “go out on a limb” and say that Nome has a strong agricultural background with high resistance to change. The few people in Nome consist of ninety-percent elderly, ten-percent youth; and the youth were “hell raisers”, “trouble makers”, or “punks”. The youth, to be considered at least one of those, were judged on three main differences and the judgment spread through the town like the black plague. Before I begin, I am going to give you a brief of Nome. The rushing of people to Nome, Texas for the oil boom was similar to the gold rush in Nome, Alaska; hence the name. Formed when racism was openly accepted into daily life of Americans, Nome was and still is segregated, the “Great Wall of Nome” just so happens to be the railroad originally laid by Texas and New Orleans Railroad Co. when the oil boom first happened, which is why African American Families live on one side of the track and whites on the other. Nome’s agricultural background is solely responsible for the segregation issues, issues brought up with younger generations, and the resistance to change; although, I am not saying an agricultural background is a bad thing because we as humans need agriculture to survive. Nome’s...

Finding Grandfather at the Battle of Vicksburg

...ever tracked your family through a family tree or maybe you are tracking that illusive ancestor right now. My family certainly has had some adventures as we tracked our ancestors all across the United States and across the ocean. We have listened to stories of past events and diligently written it all down. Some of the stories proved true and some proved false, but all are interesting as all are like a mystery that needs to be solved. One such mystery occurred in tracking my grandfather’s father and in fact my grandfather’s whole family. He was my mother’s father and his name was Marcus Webster, a poor farmer that raised seven kids and gave up his dream to become a preacher to raise his family. But his father was an enigma – we did not even know where he was buried. Marcus never would talk about him and he may have been in that generation where fathers were called Paw and mothers were call Maw and kids never even knew their names until upstart grandchildren began doing the research. It would be many years later in a very unusual way that his history would be discovered. That inquiring grandchild of 14 had been challenged to track down the family by Marcus’s wife, Lillie. That started a lifelong pursuit for zillions of ancestors that may or may not ever be found. Marriage would take that grandchild all the way to San Angelo and a faint story that the illusive grandfather, father of Marcus might have been buried in West Texas somewhere sent the family searching every...

I wanted to be intentional in the layout of my medicine wheel, I wanted it to be unique and encompass who I am; I used the set up as an element of shape. Leaving Home

...The winter seemed boundless being that it was an exceptionally cold one. Endless weeks of temperatures well below zero degrees made time drag. It seemed like spring would never come…nevertheless June. My wife was offered one of those ‘can’t say no to’ deals in Houston Texas and after much deliberation and debating, we felt that the better thing to do would be for me to stay behind and get the kids through the rest of the school year. It wasn’t until that first cold drop of water desperately pulling itself away from the roof falls down the back of my neck that I knew time had passed and the spring had arrived. Temperatures finally gave way to the inevitability of spring life. I smiled and knew we would make it…it would be ok and soon enough the kids would see their mother and I my wife. The smell of damp pine needles and dark earth pierced my nose as I stood on the porch looking out at the streets in the evening. The spring rains carried on what seemed like endlessly and day and night blended into each other - the water dripping from the eaves and rain tapping at the windowpanes. I could hear that branch scratching at my house at night as the winds that accompanied the spring rain bent the old birch tree at whim. My time to leave was nearing and I filled with excitement and anxiety. The frantic packing began. I brought home copious amounts of boxes…large ones, medium ones, small, tall, wardrobe and television ones. I brought home dish packing kits and endless feet...

Traveling Nightmare

...September 9, 2013 Traveling Nightmare At the young age of 25, I packed my children and everything I owned to move across country to prove myself. We lived in Indiana for a short time till home sicken kicked in. At which point I placed everything in storage till a later date and loaded my car down and headed home. The traveling nightmare began a year and a half later. Our traveling nightmare begins on an early August morning at DFW International Airport at 4 am to board a plane headed to Indianapolis. My traveling companion is my sixteen year old cousin Becky. Becky was super excited to fly on an airplane and travel outside of Texas. Neither of us knew what the next few days would have in store for us. We board our plane and watch the sun come up as we take off, this my friends the most the enjoyable part of our traveling nightmare. The plane trip was uneventful. We landed in Chicago and played around in the airport for a few hours. We boarded our second plane, which was a crop duster and scared Becky. We land at Indianapolis International Airport safe and sound. We hail down a taxi to take us to pick up the U-Haul in Meridian Hills, IN. The taxi ride was fun for a few minutes, till I realized the taxi driver was going the wrong way! The taxi driver was more concerned about asking us question about President George W. Bush than where he was going. For some crazy reason he thought everyone from Texas is or was related to the President. We arrive at the U-Haul location, where...

Since its publication debut in 1976 "The Education of Little Tree" has never been out of print. It hit the consumer shelves with ecstatic reviews in prestigious publication such as the New York Time and the Atlantic Monthly. The book sold more than a million copies and in 1985, a new publishing house, the University of New Mexico Press obtained publication rights and it continues to be their biggest seller, selling more than 1 _ million copies. At first read, the small 216-page book would seem suitable for young readers up through High School (Recommendation by publishers is grades 9 through 12). The book has its moments that make you smile and wonder. When it was first introduced into our school systems as required reading, schoolchildren around the country formed Little Tree fan clubs. Yet, shockingly enough, the book, "The Education of Little Tree" was publicly exposed as a fraud the year it was published. However, despite this evidence, in 1991, 15 years after its publication and 12 years after the author's death, "Little Tree" won the Abby Award and made it onto the New York Times' bestseller list. The Abby Award is given out each year by the American Booksellers Association to honor "hidden treasures." Ironically the Award began in...

How Did Juan Nepomuceno Cortina Come To America?

...Juan Nepomuceno Cortina was bon on May 16, 1824, by a wealthy cattle ranching family in Camargo, Tamaulipas. At the age of 3, his mother Estéfana inherited land surrounding Matamoros and Brownsville. The family decided to travel north, and acquire their rightful land, known as the Rio Grande Valley. In 1846, at the age of 22, Juan joined the Mexican Army to fight for his land that was currently on Texas soil due to the annexation. Juan Cortina did not really come to America, in a way America came to him by redrawing the borders of Mexico and America. In order to keep his land, he had to fight in the Mexican-American War. Juan fought under the orders of General Mariano Arista, and devised a plan together to arrive at Matamoros in an attempt to stop the advancing forces of General Zachary Taylor. “Arista asked Cortina to form a force from local Vaqueros and gather as much as possible for war. Motivation

...way. I wasn’t blessed at birth with the two brothers I wanted so badly, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t have a great childhood. I had an amazing family who loved me unconditionally, and wouldn’t you know it. I had two sisters! They were both several years older. But, I wouldn’t trade these girls for the world because they cared for me and showed their love by always playing games with me and just being around to make me happy. But as I grew older and headed to third grade, I needed something more, something stronger than two wimpy girls to wrestle or fight with. At this time, it was almost if God came down from the Heavens to answer my prayers. My parents walked in the room and informed me that we were moving to Niles. A beautiful, little town in Fremont. And I’ll never forget the glorious moment when they said, “it will be great for you Justin, you’ll be living right down the street from your two cousins, Jack and Athen.” I exploded with excitement as if I was a firework on the fourth of July! I guess life does go in your favor once in a while. All I knew, was that I had two brother-like figures to look up to and to learn all the cool things big brothers were supposed to teach you as a younger sibling. At that point, I could only imagine the things we’d get into. The first day of moving in to my new house, I barely spent anytime, in my new house. I had always...

Author Note: Written for: Professor Deborah St. George Azusa Pacific University 2014 Abstract Comparative analysis of two financial statements between Family Dollar Store Inc. and Dollar Tree Inc. In our country discount grocery chain store companies are making their place in the market as a staple for most American families. With so many to choose from, and having multiples within a close proximity of one another they have become fiercely competitive. Upon collecting the required perspective financial statements, I analyzed them in detail and identified key comparative advantages consisting of years 2012 and 201 . The following report is reflective of my findings and a brief history of each company to the end of fiscal year 2013. FAMILY DOLLAR INC. Family Dollar was founded in 1959 by Leon Levine, a 21-year-old entrepreneur. In November of that year, the company's first store was opened, in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1961, their first store in South Carolina opened, followed by stores in Georgia and Virginia, which were opened in 1962 and 1965, respectively. During the 1960s, the store company was largely a southern United States operation. By 1969, there were fifty stores in Charlotte alone. The 1970s were growing years for the store chain. In 1970, Family Dollar's stock went public for the first time, at $14.50 per share. In 1971...
