My Favorite Fruit: The Coconut. There are a plethora of fruits that one can enjoy eating. With such a broad selection of fruits provided to us, there is one in particular that seems to make my taste buds go wild; the coconut. This exotic fruit, only found in the tropics, is the one that is considered to be my favorite of all. It not only has refreshing tasty water on the inside, but also has solid fruit on the inner part of the sphere shaped cover. The particular type of coconut I enjoy eating is the Maypan Coconut. This coconut has a solid surface, which differentiates it from the one that appears to have hair-like elements. To be able to effectively consume this fruit and the water inside the coconut, one must first make sure there is water inside, because if not it will not taste too pleasant. In order to drink the water inside the coconut, you must open a small hole to fit a straw or to drain the water into a cup. After one makes sure there is no water on the inside, you should use a powerful cutting instrument, such as a machete to cut it open in half. However, if this procedure is performed with water still inside, you will make a disorder. Last but not least, if an individual wishes, they may eat the white meat inside by peeling it with a knife, and therefore it will come right off. The texture of the Maypan coconut is hard and solid. It’s so hard that if it were to fall from a tree onto an individual’s head, it may even cause a concussion. Sometimes the surfaces of coconuts aren’t as solid because since they linger and develop for such a long time, the outer covering may be deformed or deteriorated. The scent of the coconut when it is concealed might not be noticeable at all, but once it is cracked open, the aroma is unique and sweet. So much so, that it indulges you into a tropical paradise. Most Maypan coconuts are a green color, fading to a light yellow color. They are spherical in shape and have a diameter of approximately three to four inches. When shaking a mature coconut, one can hear the mouth watering fluid bouncing inside the walls of the sphere. A matter to keep in mind is, if an individual hears a lot of moving liquid inside, then the coconut does not consist of much substance. Furthermore, the more mature the coconut is, the sweeter the water and the meat are. The taste of the coconut water and the white meat itself is completely unique and succulent. Coconut water has a sweet, yet sour taste. The white meat itself is really soft. Soft enough that you can mix it in a blender with the coconut water and make coconut milk. Coconut milk taste a bit different from coconut water. Is thicker and the flavor of the white meat dominates.

Nothing compares to the fragrance of the coconut that reminds me of the good times at the beach by my grandparent's home. My grandfather used to come home every other day with a handful of coconuts and we all enjoyed drinking the coconut water and biting into the white tasteful meat afterwards. On a hot sunny day, or just when one is in the mood for it, this fruit can be both a thirst quencher and a flavorful delight. Thus no matter what the occasion, the Maypan coconut is truly the fruit that I most enjoy devouring.

I took time to think about what foods I enjoy and also the foods my family enjoys (because I cannot force my lifestyle and food choices on them…it had to be a group effort).
