First Time Riding a Bike
It was a hot June summer day. I could feel the warmth from the sun on my face as I stood in my room looking out the window watching all the other kids riding their bikes. I felt like I was the only Kid in the world who did not have a bike. I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where there was not anywhere to ride a bike, so I never learned. When I was ten, we moved to Tampa Florida to an apartment complex and all the kids were riding bikes. Many kids don’t remember how they learned to ride a bike but, for me it was a day I will never forget.
I ran down the stairs, passed the kitchen, jumped over Lady, who was our germen shepherd. She was so old that she never moved. Then I suddenly stopped as I approached my parents who were on the couch watching T.V. I sat down in the living room chair, for what seemed like forever before a commercial came on. Then I thought for a moment, how I could ask them for a bike, but my mind went blank. I just suddenly said in a loud quick voice,” Can I have a bike! I really want to learn how to ride one, and I’m almost eleven.” Then my dad said in a deep voice,” I’ll think about it.” I had a birthday coming up that next week and I was hoping that I would get my first bike. I mentioned it every day in hope that they would not forget. A few days later my parents and I were out for the day when we stopped at a yard sale, it was there I saw my first bike. It was a rusty bike with a big yellow banana seat, it certainly wasn’t impressive, but I knew it would be all mine, and at last I could cycle with all the other kids in the neighborhood. Without saying a word my dad put the bike in the car, and we left.

I watched my dad for days before my birthday taking the bike apart, every piece sanding it down. Every day when I got up I went outside where he had been working on the bike and there was always more stuff done to it. I never saw my dad go to the store to get the stuff for my bike but I didn’t really give it much thought. I could not wait until my dad put all the pieces back together. It seemed like the days went on for weeks. I waited and watched every day never saying a word, just watching. I was so excited I thought I would explode. The day of my birthday I woke up bright and early, I ran down the stairs and outside where my dad had been working on my bike, and there it was all pretty and pink with a purple seat and purple strings on the handle bars. It was the best bike I had ever seen. I went straight to my dad and gave him a hug and said “this is the best birthday ever”.

Learning to ride a bike for the first time with no training wheels was an exciting experience. At first my dad tried to help me and hold the bike, but I was too scared to take off on my own. My dad told me to put my feet on the pedals and start peddling. As soon as I started balancing myself, he let go. I fell several times and received some cuts on my hands and legs. My dad held the back of the seat as I wobbled along then he let go and I continued on my own. Soon I found I that I could pedal some distance without falling. It was frightening but I was determined to learn. I could feel the cool breeze as I took off and after a few days I was riding my bike much more stable and faster on my own. My dad looked at me with a smile and told me that I was the fastest learner that he had ever seen. That was a day I would never forget. I felt so close to my dad, it was an experience that nobody could ever take away. Almost every child will encounter this event in some period of their lifetime, and will discover a great deal from it.

A Memoir

...D. Norviel My Evil Knievel Stunt Unit 3, Assignment1 October, 11 2013 “Just because you think you can does not mean you should”. Those words spoken so many times by my Mom still echo in my mind. That summer day in 1978 in Cheyenne Wyoming was a hot day, blue skies overhead and the typical Wyoming wind was down to a soft breeze that helped cool us kids as we rode our bikes, played in the dirt and entertained ourselves using our creative ideas to come up with the next death defying stunt we would soon try to once again attempt to replicate our current hero, Evil Knievel. I was 11 that summer, finally playing with my older Brothers and their friends, accepted as one of them and this I felt, was my summer to prove to them that I was old enough and daring enough to attempt a stunt on my bicycle. That day the idea for our new stunt included a bike ramp and the neighbors Volkswagen Beetle car parked on the side of the road. So, began the planning, the construction, the design, all being done by the brightest and best carpenters and engineers from amongst the group of kids ranging in ages from 9 to 14. What could possibly go wrong? My clothing that day was pretty typical of most kids, cut off blue jean shorts and a t-shirt with basic tennis shoes. My bike was a picture of precision craftsmanship, created by my own hands from the many pieces and parts left over from my older brother’s previously wrecked, mutilated and destroyed bikes, not to mention...

...like a big kid. My mother purchased a glittery hot pink bike for my 10th birthday two months ago and a neon green bike for my younger brother who was only five. Of course, his bike was way smaller than mine. Everyday my brother and I would look forward to riding our bikes in the neighborhood while my mom walked along with us, until one day my back tire popped. In spite of my bike loss, I began to ride my brother's small bike too fast and toppled right over onto my chin. I knew I should not have been riding his bike because it was extremely too small for me, and my mother had told me not to. Instead, I did not listen and made my own decision causing me to have stitches put into the bottom of my chin. I learned that every now and then, accidents happen. [The last few sentences in this paragraph sound like you are ending the essay.] In particular, I was more than upset when I heard the loud popping noise and felt myself slow down near what seemed to be an apple tree. [Why?] "Wait up, something is wrong!" I shouted out to Michael. He was a few feet ahead of me and did not hear me. My mom ran up to me and started to examine the bike. We found a long gash in the back tire meaning an air pump would not fix this problem. After my mom explained the tire situation to me, I was furious. We walked the bike back to my house when I began to wonder what other consequences I would have to suffer for no typical reason. Is this really happening? Why did my bike's tire have...

Writers Statement: Stranger Than Fiction

...Writers Statement My editorial art work was inspired by the ending of the film Stranger Than Fiction. I was inspired by the author in the film Karen Eiffel rewrote the ending of her story so rather than Harold Crick being killed, Harold’s wristwatch who was given a voice and made to seem like another character was instead the victim of her latest tragedy novel. The purpose of this was to show the way the scene unfolded, the boy on the bike, the bus stop, and the watch that was three minutes early. I created this scene as the entire movie was built around this moment. I had to assume that my audience had previous knowledge of the film to be able to understand my art. I chose to draw the bike as if it was crossing over the road which Harold...

The Time I over Came My Fear

...and chicken being grilled out in the backyard. As I ate my enormous hamburger, I sat still amazed at what I had accomplished that day. This was one of the best summer vacations I had spent with my cousin and it was one day that I would never forget. Beep! Beep! Beep! I opened my eyes and turned to look at the alarm 4:15 AM, just fivsse more minutes I told myself sleepily. “Come on wake up so you can eat something before you leave” yelled my mom from the kitchen. The morning felt cold so I put on some sweat pants and my favorite black and white long sleeve shirt. Half asleep I ate a warm, toasted, raisin bagel with a glass of milk. By 4:50, everything was packed in the car and we were ready to leave. My sisters, Patricia and Priscilla, half asleep wrapped in their blankets, walked to the car. The cold, fresh morning air hit my face as soon as I stepped out and I was suddenly wide awake. We were now on our way to Los Osos to spend the summer at my cousin Noah’s house. We entered the 10 freeway and it was completely dead, no cars were driving about it. After about an hour of driving the sun began to rise and it seemed to give life to the freeway, cars began driving onto it and before we knew it were stuck in traffic. My sisters woke up about nine so we took the next off ramp and went to nearby Denny’s to have breakfast. We all ordered chocolate chip pancakes with bacon, sausage and a glass of orange juice, except that my mom and uncle ordered a cup of coffee instead of juice. Once...

The Future of Motorcycles and Atv’s

...The Future of Motorcycles and ATV’s I decided to write my research paper on today’s new alternate powered motorcycles and ATV’s. I have been riding and racing sense I was 8 years old. I have seen a lot of changes with motorcycles and ATV’s over the years. I started out riding two-stroke motorcycles, then four-strokes and now I’m told that electric motorcycles will be on the tracks in the not too distant future. Every year I enjoy taking annual trips to Colorado and Oklahoma. It’s refreshing to get off the motocross track and enjoy riding some very fun OHV trails. My favorite part about riding trails is seeing all the beautiful scenery. But it seems every time I go trail riding, my group and I get yelled at by someone claiming that “were are destroying their trails” and that “were just making noise.” It irritates me that there are riders out there that don’t follow the trail rules, but I am not one of them. We stay on the trail, we are respectful, our bikes and ATV’s are under the required decibels and we love the land we ride on just as much as they do. I’m glad to see our sport is getting a lot better about being more environmentally friendly with advances When I first got involved with the sport of motocross in 1997, you had two different types of dirt bikes and ATV’s to choose from, the two-stroke or the four-stroke engine. The two-stroke motorcycles dominated the motocross classes because of their high performance and lightweight motors. Unfortunately, these...
