As I started my high school career in athletics, volleyball was my logical choice for a fall sport, at the time. I had practiced and played the sport since fourth grade and through the last three years of my high school career. By the end of my Junior year, I decided that as a senior, I would compete in cross country instead of volleyball. Joining this sport was a big risk. The year before, there was only one girl that competed in this sport, but she graduated. I gave up comradery from the volleyball team for cross country. I left the sport in which all my friends played. Why did I make this decision so late in my high school career? As a freshman, I had hopes of playing basketball in college. But, with success in track and a college visit,

Reflective Essay: The Effects Of The Pollution In The Chesapeake Bay

...use the Boatwright library website. In public school I was not taught the importance of scholarly work nor how to find it. The only time I was assigned a major research project was in my senior year of high school. I went to one of the specialty schools in the Richmond Public Schools system. Two of the requirements for graduation was the freshman paper and the senior thesis. Looking back, I remember how hard I was struggling in completing my freshmen paper. It was about the effects of the pollution in the Chesapeake Bay. The 10 page paper required extensive research with 350 flashcards, 3 drafts, and a class trip to the Chesapeake Bay at the end of...

Why I Decided to Return to College

...yourself or your family with a short at a better life college is something that must be accomplished. When you are able to fulfill your goal of finishing your college education it makes looking to the future a little easier. In this particular research paper I will tell you how returning to college the best decision for my life was. How earning a college degree will make life easier? When you think about college and a career you want to choose a career that will bring you joy and that will never seem like you are tired. Some of us think that earning lot of money is the most important thing when choosing a career. It’s not, being able to enjoy what you do will make life easier and seem as if you are not working but doing a hobby. Remembering back at my high school days a teacher told us to find something we are good at and enjoy and make a career out of it. I am learning the importance of not picking a career that has the highest earning potential because it could be a job that I am miserable. Choosing something you love will never feel like work. When a person finish college and obtain a degree they are more than likely able to earn more money than a high school or GED graduate. A person should never get into a career that will have them stressed out on a daily basic’s. If we keep in mind that working should be awarding and fun, then there will be no time for stress. Finally, when you are doing something that matter it helps you to know that you are making...

Modeling, Visualization, and Assessment

...being used in several careers. Disciplines such as mechanical design and architecture have traditional utilized drawings such as plans, sections, and elevations as the primary medium for design communication as well as documentation (Guidera, 2010). Highway design engineers now use visualization as an opportunity to improve the entire planning, design, and construction process for all types of projects, big and small, and from start to finish (Taylor, & Moler, 2010). The following sections will discuss incorporating modeling activities, creative ways to use visualization tools, technologies for assessing student progress, and difficulties expected with the incorporation of modeling, visualization, and assessment. Incorporating Modeling Activities Modeling activities can be tailored to fit any classroom situation. There are several things to keep in mind when using or creating modeling activities for instruction. One thing to keep in mind is that the activity is should be interactive. The modeling should also provide opportunities for them to experiment with the model or modify. The second thing to keep in mind is that the purpose of using a model is to help bridge the gap between observations and the real world. The final thing to keep in mind is that modeling can introduce students to important terms as well as provide a setting to explore related methods. Since the content area I teach is business, management, and administration, I could work with my students on business...

Reflection

...of my freshman has been a very interesting trip. I have learned so much in the short amount of time that I have spent here at Kennesaw State University. I feel as if I have grown, not only as a student, but as a person as well. I have met many new people, made many new friends, and learned many new things especially in my English 1101 class. I thought I knew everything there was to know about writing when I came in on my first day, but I was very wrong. My professor assured me that there is much more to writing than just putting words down on paper. Knowing all of this, I have now learned how to improve on my writing skills, how to write better grammatically correct sentences, incorporate quotes and research and give as well as get criticism. When I came into this semester as a freshman I was very confident in the quality of my writing. However, my self-esteem was soon crushed shortly thereafter. Even though my writing skills had been very good compared to my classmates in high school, at the university level they were just average. After hearing about the on average grades students get in professor Elliott’s class, I knew I had a lot of work to do to receive an A on a paper. I had to do something quick to learn how improve on my writing skills. With the help of my teacher, she made us a read a variety of articles that were very interesting, yet also very insightful and helpful at the same time. One article that really stood out to me was called “Engfish.” In high school, teachers...

Many Many Sops

...~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As for SOPs, don't worry too much. All of you have good writing skills. Anyway, my advice on this matter is: [1] Have a look at some SOPs *now* or early next SEM. [2] When it's time to write your own SOP, do it *fully* by yourself. Do not look at anybody else's SOP. [3] Having made version 1.0 of your SOP, *now* take a look at as many SOPs as you can of guys in your area. Borrow points from then which you think are good. [4] Your SOP does not have to be too big. We at IITB tend to write long SOPs (1.5 to 2 pages) whereas IITM guys (who get better schools!)Usually write 0.75 page (max. 1 page). Basically, their SOPs are much more direct and to-the-point than ours. [5] REMEMBER THAT A SOP *MUST* BE ORIGINAL. Statement of Purpose I am applying to Stanford University for admission to the Ph.D. program in Computer Science. I am interested in Theoretical Computer Science, particularly in the Design and Analysis of Approximation Algorithms, Combinatory and Complexity Theory. My interest in Mathematics goes back to the time I was at school. This interest has only grown through my years in school and high school, as I have learnt more and more about the subject. Having represented India at the International Mathematical Olympiads on two occasions, I have been exposed to elements of Discrete Mathematics, particularly Combinatory and Graph Theory, outside the regular school curriculum at an early stage. The intensive training programs we were put through for...

Perfect Essay In High School Writing

...Throughout all of high school, students are taught in minimal ways to produce “perfect” essays and present them so that when they get to college they can pass their classes. This means that high school teachers only teach them to write so specifically and in such a hard structured manner, that many students hardly ever learn to write papers that flow. In high school, I always wrote really nice papers that my teachers enjoyed grading, however, I always hated writing them because if I did not use the cookie cutter format that they gave us, my teachers would not accept the work. The format that I am referring to goes as follows: hook, introduction, and thesis for paragraph one, three body paragraphs with two examples to support your thesis in each paragraph, and finally a conclusion ("Essay Template"). In total, there were five paragraphs, never any more, and never any less. The hook was always supposed to be a quote related to the topic or a factual piece of information...

Preparing for the Workplace

...GOOD TO GO!!!! preparing Students for Success in College and the Workforce “We will end what has become a race to the bottom in our schools and instead spur a race to the top by encouraging better standards and assessments… And I'm calling on our nation's governors and state education chiefs to develop standards and assessments that don't simply measure whether students can fill in a bubble on a test, but whether they possess 21st century skills like problem-solving and critical thinking and entrepreneurship and creativity. That is what we'll help them do later this year -- when we finally make No Child Left Behind live up to its name by ensuring not only that teachers and principals get the funding that they need, but that the money is tied to results.” President Barack Obama Remarks to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce March 10, 2009 Last year, the President challenged states to develop standards and assessments that will help America’s children rise to the challenge of graduating from high school prepared for college and the workplace. Today, the President applauds Governors for their efforts to work together in a state-led consortium – managed by the National Governors Association (NGA) and the Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) – to develop and implement new reading and math standards that build toward college- and career-readiness. With many states well positioned to adopt these standards, the Governors initiative is an essential first step in improving the...

Lteracy Narrative

...Andrew Yates Instructor – Anissa Demiter ENG 111 January 16, 2015 Literacy Narrative Throughout my childhood, the idea of having a college education was greatly stressed. As a result, it was my duty as the next generational child, to excel in my studies and achieve a life of prosperity and success. Learning became the basic foundation of my growth. Therefore, my youth was overtaken by many hours spent reading and writing what was known to be correct "Standard" English. I first found this to be a great shortcoming, but I knew that one day I wanted to have a great career. At this time I had no idea what I was going to become but trough reading and writing I had a few ideas. One idea was to be a truck driver or a pharmacist, but I later discovered I liked law enforcement much better. Through the many years of school I have found it very hard to get through my English classes. I found writing to be the hardest subject, but I always gave it my best. Reading I found much easier. I have always liked reading more it is easier than to write something. My mom always helped me through by encouraging to do so. She always told me “son if you just give it your best then you will make good grades”. Those words have stuck with the throughout my life. I strive to do my best in everything I do today. I give it my best. I think the reason I struggled with writing is because I’m more of a hands on person. I have been this way for as long as I can remember. I used to take...

Alma College Student Analysis

...My first year at Alma College has been an eye-opening experience. I have learned a lot academically, about myself, and about life in general. As I progressed though the year my viewpoints had changed. I had many new experiences that broadened my horizon. My classes opened me up to knowledge I could apply to my life, that I found interesting, and benefitted me. I learned a lot about myself, including what I want out of my college experience, and what my passion is. Despite the numerous papers, multitudes of exams, tremendous amount of course work, and athletics I believe I have done well. One of the many demanding classes this semester was English 101. In this rigorous course, students were asked to gain rhetorical knowledge, engage in critical writing, perform research writing, and improve their style and grammar. These goals are closely related to those of the WPA Outcomes published by the Council of Writing Program Administrators. The WPA...

Reasons for Becoming a Teacher

...education evolved in my lifetime? I think the biggest change in education since I was in school has got to be technology. Back when I was in school we didn’t have things like high tech calculators and computers and Interactive Smart Boards. We did all our work by hand using pencils, pens and paper. When I was in elementary school the basic core skills of reading, writing, and math were taught by hand, we had to do all our reading in books, we didn’t have the Smart Boards like they do today where teachers can load a book on the screen and each student can read together or individually to the other students. Anything that had to do with writing was done by hand on paper unlike today where students can use computers to write their essays. Math was all done by hand on paper long division was a process that was broken down step by step, not using calculators or computers to find the answers. We did our multiplication tables by hand until we had them memorized. Things were simpler back to a point and to a point they are easier now, everything that we had to research for essays in high school was done at the library. We had to learn to use the Dewey Decimal System to find the books we needed. Today most all research is done on the computer, I find that this aspect of research is much easier for students including myself, being a student again. I don’t think that if things were like they were before when I was in school I would be going back to school to become a...

Personal Marketing Strategy Term Paper

...The purpose of writing this paper is to showcase my skills, special talents, and career desires. By explaining events from my life, I plan to give insight into who I am as a person and what I have to offer to potential employers. I will provide personal experiences, which pertain to me acquiring certain skill sets and also research about the graphic design market. My goal in this paper is to show the drive, passion, and love I have for becoming a graphic designer and artist. To achieve this goal, I have organized my paper into four main sections. In the first section, I provide an account of four important events in my younger years: winning a drawing contest for a local church, taking art lessons with a very talented local artist in the low country, winning first prize at the Coastal Carolina State Fair, and working for a small graphics business. In the second section, I discuss my transition from high school into college with art, the skills I have attained, and my MBTI test results. My paper draws to an end with a third section that offers research of the graphic design market which is the field I chose to major in while attending college concludes with a fourth section that discusses the importance of what success means to me.
