Topic: Firefighter Daily Preparation

Specific Purpose Statement: The specific purpose of this speech is to inform the audience about a firefighter's daily responsibilities to insure that he, and his crew, are ready for any call.

Thesis Statement: Many people do not realize the work that firefighters do on a day-to-day basis.

Introduction

I. Lazy! All they do is eat, sleep, and watch tv. It's such an easy job that requires no experience in order to make such a decent living.

II. I'm sure that you feel the same way. I mean, what do they do that's so special? They may have an occasional fire that they extinguish and a basic medical call from time to time.

III. Many people do not realize the work that firefighters/first responders do on a day-to-day basis.

Body

I. First Responders go through a lot of preparation to insure that their lives are as safe as possible at the beginnning of each shift.

A. At the beginning of each shift, a good firefighter thoroughly checks his/her breathing mask, air tank, bunker pants, bunker coat, helmet, nomex hood, gloves, boots, radio, and flashlight. 1. The process of checking an air tank. B. Each vehicle must also be thoroughly checked. 1. The engine lights, brakes, turn signals, sirens, the water pump, all tools, extra hoselines, bags, medical equipment, extra air tanks, and machines. C. After all equipment has been checked, rules mandate that these checks be documented and signed by the shift commander.
1. Possibility of future legal actions against wrong documentation.
2. Safety; serious injury or death could occur.

II. Daily training is an integral part of any firehouse. Without training first responders can fall to error by making simple mistakes that can endanger the lives of that first responder and their crew.

A. The daily calls that first responders receive are mainly EMS - related with the likely possibility for a structure/wildland fire. 1. EMS – related calls. 2. Fire – related calls. B. EMS and Fire Incident Action Planning covers scenario - based calls and hands on training of possible. 1. Drills and practices. 2. Efficiency of thought process. C. Exercise and nutrition play a large role in the lives of every first responder. 1. Difficulties and rigors of the job. 2. Death of firefighters yearly due to health complications.

Conclusion

I. In order to perform the job of a first responder well, there is an enormous amount of hard work, dedication, and training that they must commit to. The schooling and the training never stops.

II. I hope that I have shed some light and helped to change your perceptions on the duties of every firefighter everywhere, though I was not able to touch bases on the different responsibilities of special fire companies such as Hazmat and Rescue. Each firefighter goes to work with the knowledge of the possibility that he/she may not get to return home to their loved ones the next day. Please thank a firefighter.

My Informative Speech Compared To My Shield Speech

...I was much more prepared for my informative speech compared to my Shield speech. All I did to prepare was make sure my outline was done and write notecards. I felt fairly comfortable in front of the class. I knew what I was going to talk about, my topic was not too hard to get enough information in four to six minutes without leaving anything out. The speech went well. I was in the time limit. I had good eye contact. My technology worked perfectly. The only thing I did not do was verbally cite my sources. Once I was done, I instantly thought about not citing my sources. I originally planned to cite each source at the end 0f each main point. I forgot about the first source and then quickly decided while giving my speech that I would throw them...

...My reaction to this Informative Speech was much more nerve wrecking then my first speech. I was all glittery forgot words, sentence and what I prepared for the speech I mixed everything up. Standing in front of the class is horrifying to me. This speech made me think about what to inform my audience about that may catch their attention. For my informative speech, I choose to research the topic of Volcanoes in Nicaragua because I find it very interesting. Such a beautiful place to visit and my experience is where the idea evolved from. I chose to do this topic because my partner is from Nicaragua and I have seen very interesting sites, experienced and the history that the country beholds is breathe taking . I knew that Nicaragua had active volcanoes and at the volcanoes there were adventurous and different tours. Throughout my informative speech I explained how the volcanoes in Nicaragua are formed in a chain North and South of Nicaragua. I also went into detail on the adventurous that can be done at the top of the Volcanoes like hiking, skiing and site seeing. Overall, I felt that my informative speech was fairly successful. There were quite a few reasons why I thought why my speech was an effective speech. By providing my audience with information on things to do at the Volcanoes in Nicaragua. First, I felt that my subject was relevant to my audience because everyone likes to travel and the majority of the audience likes the adrenaline of being adventurous and experiencing the...

Public Speaking

...Public Speaking Essay Exam 1 Hello Mr. Trump, I hear that next week you will be sharing your own favorite hobbies with business students in Queens, New York, so I am going to help you construct your speech. Anyone can deliver an interesting informative speech, for example, President Barack Obama is known for giving informative speeches to the United States. Let me explain exactly what an informative speech is; it is a speech that intends to educate the audience on a particular topic. This type of speech focuses on using description, demonstration, and visuals to explain a subject, a person, or in this case your own hobbies. An informative speech is not the same thing as a persuasive speech. Although the two can merge together, an informative speech relies more on communicating pure information to the audience. The invention of a speech is very important. Being organized is an absolute must when delivering a speech. If the speaker is unorganized and unprepared, it can definitely affect the presentation towards the group. Start off by constructing an outline for your speech. To start off, write down your favorite hobbies and narrow them down to a few. Make note to include the importance of hobbies in your speech. The three hobbies that I selected were shopping, baking with my grandmother, and reading novels. Time, style, and delivery are very important. The most important skill in speaking is storytelling. The arrangement of your draft should follow your outline. When drafting...

Speech Preparation

...Speech Preparation Reflection Alicia Ramos COM/110 April 25, 2016 Linda Price Speech Preparation Reflection The best way to prepare for a presentation, one must consider the best method, the type of presentation and the audience for a given topic. There are four different types of presentation methods they are; Impromptu, Extemporaneous Speaking, Using a Manuscript, and Memorization. Each of the four methods is appropriate in certain situations. Impromptu is a speech that frequently involves no preparation time and forces you to think on your feet. With no opportunity to prepare, you must rely on what you know. Extemporaneous is a speech that involves preparation and practice. This form of delivery has many advantages. Specifically, speakers can maintain a personal connection with their listeners and respond to their feedback. Manuscript is a speech where everything is written out. The speaker reads the manuscript word for word. Memorized is a speech that has been committed to memory. This method may be useful when you know you will be receiving an award or recognition so you make sure you thank the right people. An informative speech is one that informs the audience. This week our assignment was to do an informative presentation. I know when doing an informative presentation I must inform my audience strictly with facts. I decided to do the presentation about my company and services we provide because I wanted to inform my audience about social services we...

Depresion in Children

...Speeches Sweaty palms, perspiration running down your face, dry mouth; these are all the signs of someone who is nervous about giving a speech. When thinking about speaking sometimes it brings fear. It is important to remember that public speaking is a part of everyday life. You may not have a large audience, but you do have an audience and you must convey what you are trying to get across to them. Public speaking is another form of conversation. There is as rich history in public speaking. As early as ancient Greece speeches were required as part of the education. Plato said that Rhetoric is the art of winning the soul by discourse. Aristotle identified the basic elements of good speech and persuasion as ethos, logos, and pathos. The ethos (credibility, believability) of the speaker was important; the logos (logic) behind any conclusions drawn by the speaker during the course of the speech needed to be valid and clear; and the pathos (emotional appeals) were important in making human connections between the speaker and the listener. In the Bible there are many examples of this process. “And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain, and when he was set his disciples came unto him. And he opened his mouth and taught them saying, Blessed are the poor is spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.” (Thompson King James Version Bible, Psalm 139:1-10)This familiar...

Cna Narrative

...With this informative speech being the second speech I have given in this class, I would have to say that it was a little jumbled compared to my narrative. I was very apprehensive about this speech and I feel that came out through my speaking. I was very confident about the topic I was speaking on, but I feel the broadness of the topic threw me off a little bit. Overall, I am satisfied with my speech but know I have some weaknesses to work on. But besides the weaknesses, I was happy with some of my strengths in my speech. In the beginning of my speech, I feel I did a good job starting off with a couple interesting facts and emphasizing a pause between the two. I know we talked about the importance of pauses in speeches, which I felt I did a good job with last time, so I tried to following actions from the last speech. Along with the pauses, I feel that I had a decent amount of voice inflection through my speech. I did tend to stumble a few times throughout my speech, but I thought I did an ok job changing the tone of my voice. Also, I feel that my movement went alright through the speech. I did begin to shift my weight when I would stumble on a sentence or point, but otherwise I did attempt to move after my intro and body. Lastly, I think I did a good job of using proper hand gestures. At times I would keep my hands close to my body when I sharing my aunts story, but when I began to talk about the actual topic I began to use my hands more to emphasize points I was saying. So...

Kennetras Work

...Kennetra Isler CMST 2060 MWF- 730 Speech Reflection Paper Doing an Informative speech was not an easy task at all but it was worth it after you finished it. This speech included an outline, scholarly sources, and a lot of hard work and preparation. My topic I chose was Internet dating, but I wanted to be a little more detailed and go into the new dating scam called Catfishing. After I finally was sure about my topic I began to search for sources. I actually had a very difficult time finding scholarly sources on Catfishing because since its fairly new there wasn’t any helpful scholarly information out of it. What I had to do was just use sources from Online dating that talked about Catfishing or gave some kind of information about online dating going wrong. After I finally collected all of my sources I began constructing my outline. Outline took me a bit of time because I wanted to get every detail in their right because I would not have time to use or say every detail in my speech. For the outline I followed every step in our Public Speaking book. After I finished my outline I began my speech and started practicing using my attention getter, main points, transitions and ending. With all of this it was quite an experience. I learned from this experience that I need to slow down when I’m speaking and try to choose a topic that I can find a lot of scholarly information on so I can give a better speech. I thought that I projected well even though I was very nervous and I...

...The Longest Day, the Shortest Speech http://vsotd.com/featured-speech/longest-day-shortest-speech#sthash.5hXfbsUi.dpuf "The troops, the air and the Navy did all that Bravery and devotion to duty could do." Address by Dwight D. Eisenhower Written in case of failure of D-Day Invasion, Normandy, France on June 6, 1944 In my analysis of this speech, I have found that the speech fails to adhere to the guidelines of informative speech. Although it meets a few of the guidelines, the speech overall is unsuccessful in the essence of providing the vital information needed to make it a worthy informative speech. In it’s opening sentence, the speech violates the guideline “Don’t be too technical”. The speaker’s use of words such as “landings” and “foothold” are technical jargons that the ordinary audience would not be able to fully comprehend. His speech is more directed towards the military savvy audience than the common citizen and leaves a lot to be desired. The speaker could have improved his speech by using less specialized words. Although sometimes, it becomes difficult to put military terms in easy to understand language, the speaker could have used words such as “attack” in lieu of “landings” and “control” instead of “foothold”. This would have made it much easier for the audience to understand and relate to the scene. Also, in the opening sentence, the speaker violates another guideline “Don’t overestimate what the audience knows” about the topic. He refers to “Cherbourg-Havre”...
