Case-In-Point Influenza Pandemics Past and Future
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” (SANTAYANA, 1905) Unintended consequences of humankind’s activities that have led to the spread of the influenza virus during flu season are the lack of dispersing of the vaccine to the poor and homeless, non restriction of travel to or from known areas with high infection rates, and the quarantining of the infected in industrialized areas. Review of the past influenza epidemics and pandemics have shown that the reaction time is far too slow when dealing with such a communicable disease. In the US, the ill are not forced to stay home to prevent the spread of the disease. During the past H1N1 outbreak, travel was not restricted to and from areas with a high infection rate, nor was the border sealed.
Scientific or technological activities that are improving the situation are in the area of research and study of influenza. This study has allowed scientists to develop vaccines that often aid in preventing severe illness or death. There are two forms of the vaccine, an inactivated (or killed virus) vaccine delivered via needle intramuscularly, or a weakened live virus delivered via nasal spray. These vaccines are updated every year. Study of influenza is done year round in over 130 national centers in over 101 countries (CDC, 2011)
The application of the scientific method aided in the developments that lead to the creation of the influenza vaccine. The problem was the influenza virus. The hypothesis was that a means of inoculation could be created to prevent or slow the spread of influenza. Some of the initial research was performed by Nobel Prize Winner, Frank Macfarlane Burnet. He hypothesized that chicken embryos could be used to cultivate viruses (Nobel Prize, 1960). The yearly review of the virus allows the available information on influenza to be shared.
One alternative to pursue would be to make the vaccine free to all that desire to be inoculated. Radical measures are required to fight against a radical disease.

The World: The First Time In My Life

...“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. 2 A.M was the time my whole family had awaken. The most folly thing I did that same night was drink soda when I obviously had to get a good night’s rest because I was leaving for Mexico for the first time in my life. My parents along with my siblings had to take down our suitcases into the truck. The car ride to the airport was really harmonious because it wasn’t that far, plus I was really excited to meet my family over there. At the airport we meet with two of our relatives. It was a devastation my parents couldn’t go with us due to the fact that they didn’t have papers. After a while of waiting it for the airport workers to check our luggage we had to say our goodbyes to my parents. My parents told me and my siblings to...

College Admissions Essay: The Best Time Of My Life

...“Life’s not out to get you, despite the things you’ve been through…” A quote I will never forget. As a young aspiring musician, there will always be hardships and sinkholes. Three years of work turned to six, and now to nine. Although I fell apart after these fateful days, my achy bones tell a story along with my tattered clothes from each night after that December. 13 year old Jenaro, a wannabe local musician, has his first show only days away from turning 14. The event drew closer and I envisioned it being the best time of my career, possibly my life. That fateful night brought panic attacks, anger, and my deep seeded self-loathing up front to the masses, and I failed myself. A tightly packed crowd watched on as a younger me broke down under my internal turmoil reaching its boiling point. Repression set in, I was certain I’d never pursue music after that night. Secluded, I hid myself for close to a year after that day. I was humbled by my experience, but deeply I knew I couldn’t just give up forever. Mid way through the spring, my phone vibrated in my...

DENISE MASSEY IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR SPIRITUAL FORMATION: THSP 501 MASTER OF DIVINITY BY JOHN WATSON ATLANTA, GA DECEMBER 2013 At the beginning of the course we were told that we had to put together a paper that would be entitled “The Rule of Life”. At the very outset of hearing this, my mind began to wonder what in the world that is about. I didn’t really understand the concept or began to understand the concept until I had the opportunity to experience the retreat at camp Pinnacle. This opportunity to go hiking was an experience that truly changed my life and how I spend time with Christ. It also helped me understand the importance of creating and implementing rules in my life that would be beneficial to my ultimate growth while at seminary. Now as I begin to think about the methodologies and routines that I want to place into my life in order to enhance my spiritual process here at seminary carries a little more meaning than just something to put on paper. Resocialation

...Sometimes in life, we expect a marriage life to be happily ever after like the children’s stories, Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty, but it isn’t always the case. In reality, some marriage life does last forever but some doesn’t. As for mine, it only lasted for a couple years till I finally draw the line and said, “No more of this miserable life.” As time goes on, I have been living in a more stable and happy life compared to the married life I have before. How and why did I do it? Basically, I did it by re-socializing to adapt and cope to the married life I have now. What do I mean by re-socializing? It means that I must learn from my past experiences and make a dramatic change in the area concerning my behaviors, attitudes, expectations, and values to improve my new life. Before I get into my behavior change, I want to give a brief discussion on the topic why people get divorced. There are many reasons why people get divorced, but I will list a few of the important ones. First reason has to do with the break-down in communication and disclosure. This occurs with when both party starts to limit the communication between them. When one stopped talking to the other, it showed a lost of interest to be with the other one. If this goes on, both parties will eventually have negative thoughts such as, he or she is cheating, he or she don’t love me no more, or he or she is up to something no good. These kinds of negative thoughts aren’t good in a marriage life. Another...
