My Life in Atlanta

All good things come to an end. But, sometimes only to make way for great things. I miss you Atlanta friends and family. I think about you often as I pave my way along new terrain.

I am thankful for the southern heat. My introduction to Indian food. My amazingly strenuous graduate school education that re-taught me suffering is often worth it. My intense teaching experience at Eaton Academy. Juggling five separate courses was a serious hazing.

I am thankful for twelve years spent with my brother and his adorable family. For the long walks around the Highlands. For my break-in experiences with getting laid off, meeting horrible men, living in boxcar size apartments, and taking care of myself in a strange city.

I have enormous, humble gratitude to fate. The gods telephoned me in Seattle, hinting I'd find BIG love in the city with the most traveled airport. Thus, I hitched my way across country, just in time to meet him. OK. Not exactly. But, I still made it to ATL within six months of my husband (a total stranger back then). Thank you gods.

Thank you, Atlanta, for teaching me I would rather live up north after all, despite my lifelong fantasy that the south is my home. You are more of a siren for me, in truth. (No offense). I get caught up in the mossy trees and ghost stories. In the sweet tea and homemade grits. No one provided me with wax in the ears, however, and for that, I am relieved.

I picked up a part of myself that had stayed behind in my journey out west years ago. Rather, I think she grew up a bit. She idealizes life a bit less. She lives more in real-time than in the past. She also carries a hefty-size pocketful of kryptonite with her now.

Thank you, Atlanta. Thank you, South. You house some beautiful childhood memories and some even more tree-mossy adulthood memories. I am still in love with you, but you were my childhood sweetheart. And that love is a bit hollow, fully of honey, when I need real sustenance now.

...Descriptive Essay September 27, 2014 English 1010 - 85 A Mini Vacation to Atlanta, Georgia Traveling is one of my family’s favorite things to do. The family has visited numerous places throughout the United States, however, none are as memorable as Atlanta, Georgia. In Atlanta, there are many places to go and sights to see such as: Cola-cola factory, Cabbage Patch Kids Factory, Under Ground Mall, the Zoo, Atlanta Braves Stadium, Six Flags Over Georgia, Stone Mountain Park, and the Atlanta Aquarium, are all in or near the city of Atlanta. The three that we visit on every trip to Atlanta are Six Flags, Stone Mountain, and the Atlanta Aquarium. Six Flags Over Georgia is a theme park containing anything from carnival foods to trilling rides. Six Flags provides many activities for all ages. It is not at all uncommon to see famous cartoon characters, such as Bugs Bunny, roaming around the park. Older children and adults who possess strong stomachs may enjoy riding the various roller coasters available. For example, The Batman, is my favorite. The Batman goes up and down steep hills and even loops upside down. My wife closes her eyes the whole time on this ride. Six Flags also has water rides available to keep people cool. My favorite is Thunder River and Hurricane Harbor. Last June, my family and I were lucky enough to get caught under the waterfall on Thunder River we were soaked which was good because we were hot. Six Flags also has games to play and many souvenir...

Cause and Effect

...Pittsburgh After living in Atlanta, GA for 13 years, what made me move back to Pittsburgh, PA? Atlanta had wonderful weather, a city rich in African American culture, and a lively atmosphere. Pittsburgh has weather that sucks, very little African American culture and the overall feeling in the city is one of depression. So why would I move back? Well I moved to Atlanta 13 years ago after meeting my ex-husband online. The excitement and allure of a new city, new opportunities and a new life are what caused me to leave my home city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Well if I loved Atlanta, why did I come back? The marriage, to say the least didn’t work out. My ex-husband was abusive, controlling and an all-around tyrant. Also, I missed my family. Lastly, I had lost myself and was dying to find out who I was again. I met my ex-husband in a Yahoo chat room. I had just graduated from business school and had a three year old daughter. He was able to conceal many things while hiding behind a computer screen and Yahoo screen name. When I moved to Atlanta in October of 1998, I was under the impression that we would have a lucrative life, filled with kids, beautiful homes, cars and a comfortable lifestyle. That was not the case. Within a year of being together, I was no longer allowed to work, was suffering physical, mental, emotional and financial abuse and too scared to leave. I missed my family in Pittsburgh so much over the 13 years that I was in Atlanta. I was not allowed...

Race and Community

... In my community in which I live there are a variety of many ethnic groups. When I go outside, and sit on my front porch I can see many ethnic groups communicating with each other. I was born and raised in Inglewood, CA for a while but I moved to Atlanta, GA with my father. I have not live in many cities but the one in which I live are quite different from the one I grew up. Atlanta, GA is the city where I live now. “Atlanta is the capital and most populous city in the state of Georgia as well as the urban core of one of the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the United States with a population of 537,958.” Atlanta is also known to have many actors, singers, and music producer that live here. Atlanta is the home of the National Football League Atlanta Falcons, National Basketball Association Atlanta Hawks, and Major League Baseball Atlanta Braves. Atlanta is the city to have Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic site, Carter Center, and The World of Coca-Cola Museum. When I was growing up I never paid any attention to how people look and what ethnic group he or she belong in. The community I grew up in was mainly Caucasians and African Americans. We had a few Hispanics that was living in the city but they mainly came in the summer to work. Personal Narrative: My Home State Of Georgia

...There are many beautiful cities in my home state, but all of these places cannot be called home. Home is somewhere you can be comfortable and that satisfies your needs, whatever they may be. In my current home state of Georgia there are many places I would consider living, but there is one place I would not live, that place is Atlanta. Safehouse Outreach Analysis

...“The hardest thing for a homeless person is sleep and a conversation,” said Pastor Garrett with Safehouse Outreach. On Lovett’s Service Initiative for Ninth Graders (SING), advisory groups went out to various social service organizations. At these organizations, students completed diverse community service projects to help the Greater Atlanta community. My advisory group went to three places: United Way, Safehouse Outreach, and World Relief. The service at each organization was different, but overall my view on homelessness has changed. During my SING experience, I learned about the issue of homelessness when conversing with Pastor Garrett who works for Safehouse Outreach. Garrett knows first hand what it is like to be living on the streets. Garrett served our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not only did he leave the military with an honorable discharge, but he also left with no compassion what so ever. Garrett, still compassionless, felt compelled to work with a church in his hometown in South Carolina. He was sent to a...

The Dance

...The Dance By: Kelly Evans Dancing has been an important part of my life for more than eight years. When I was eight, my mother enrolled me in dancing classes, never realizing it would lead to anything serious. For the first few months, dance was entertainment, something to keep me busy. Although I enjoyed taking classes, I did not become serious until the following year, when my favorite tap teacher told my mother to consider getting me involved in more competitive classes. That was the beginning of my long and successful dancing career, one that has taught me many valuable lessons about the art of dance, and the art of life. Over the years, whether I was living in Buffalo, Atlanta, or Randolph, New Jersey, I learned to adjust as a person, and as a serious dancer. In fact, I found traits I needed to survive and grow as a dancer were also valuable in school and life. Of all the experiences I've had as a dancer, I cherish those moments when I had the opportunity to learn from other dancers. Learning is central to the development of a dancer. In Atlanta, for example, I trained with dancers who studied with the Atlanta Ballet Company as well as those who had trained with famous European dancers, I learned something different from each, even though practices were long and grueling. And yet, although at times I wanted to give up, I sensed that I would be rewarded for my efforts. This pattern repeated itself several times. I would be uprooted and immediately plunged into new...

While serving in Texas and what is now Oklahoma, Flipper was involved in engineering and mining projects, including draining swamps, building wagon roads and installing telegraph lines. In 1880, he fought against the Apache chief Victorio and earned a commendation. In November 1881, he was posted to Fort Davis, Texas, where a superior officer accused him of embezzling $3,791.77 in missing commissary funds, as well as of conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman. Flipper maintained his innocence in this matter for the rest of his life. A court martial cleared Flipper of the embezzlement charge but found him guilty of unbecoming conduct and dismissed him from the Army on June 30, 1882. As a civilian, Flipper remained in the West for much of his life and continued to work on engineering and surveying...

His next album 8701 produced number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 such as, “U Remind Me”, and “U Got It Bad” which were certified 4-times platinum by the RIAA (“Gold & Platinum”, 2012). As far as Usher's personal life is concerned, his father left the family when Usher was just a year old. Usher grew up and spent most of his life in Chattanooga. Usher's grandmother discovered Usher's singing talents and she realized that he could sing professionally when he joined a singing group. In order to provide greater opportunities for Usher to showcase his talents, Usher's family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, which was an ideal environment for beginners in singing. Usher joined the Rhythm and Blues (R&B) group called NuBeginnings at age 11, and recorded some ten songs with that group in 1991, but the songs that were part of the album Nubeginning Featuring Usher Raymond IV were available only at the regional level and that too by mail order. Usher competed in Star Search, a reality show to identify talented singer at the age of 13. In that show Usher was spotted by an Artists and Repertoire (A&R) representative from the recording label LaFace Records, which after an audition by Usher with its co-founder Reid, “signed the gospel choir boy to a recording contract” (Lane, 2012). Crime Data

The other I chose for this paper was Atlanta, GA although I do not live there it is close by and it is a part of my new surroundings and frequent it a lot. Aggravated Assault The crime I chose to use as a comparison is aggravated assault. The area that had the most reported incidents was the metropolitan are of Los Angeles. Los Angeles metropolitan are had a reported seven thousand six hundred and twenty-four. The metropolitan area of Atlanta only had two thousand nine hundred and sixty-five. These numbers mentioned before were a whole total. The statistics per a hundred thousand inhabitants is significantly different. In the metropolitan area of Los Angeles, CA per one hundred thousand inhabitants there was a total of one hundred eighty-nine and in the area of Atlanta there was a total of two hundred and five. The amount of inhabitants plays a huge role on the percentage Although not sure if it is a great thing, it is definitely good to see that in statistics both places have been going down in the area of aggravated assault. Since the year 2001 in Los Angeles aggravated assaults have gone down significantly. In 2001 Los Angeles had a reported thirty-three thousand and eighty aggravated assaults and in the year 2013 the amount reported of aggravated assault was only seven thousand twenty-four. In the city of Atlanta the...

Atlanta Police Department

...of series of my examination of the Atlanta Police Department. A department like no other. The department is strong as a unit but it is still only as strong as one of its officers. The officers vow to uphold the city and the department and are proud to represent both as the best the city has to offer. These officers are highly trained and very carefully selected. Now we will explore how these officers are selected, then trained and then finally how they are put out on the streets protecting the city. Before an officer is an officer they are just upstanding ordinary citizens. Before they can become an officer they must submit an application and be selected to become an APD officer, not just anyone can submit an application there are certain requirements that must be met. First the potential officer must be a legal citizen of the United States. One must pass a cognitive skills examination and personality assessment. Also potential officers must have no less than 20/100 vision in each eye, must have a high school diploma and/or a G.E.D. certificate. Lastly, they must be at least 20 years of age. If that’s not enough once they have been offered employment with the department they must undergo a medical evaluation. Diversity in My Community

...Diversity in My Community I currently live in on military base in North Carolina where the only color that people see is green. I am unaware of any racism that occurs within our community. My neighborhood consists of a multitude of different races and we all converse with each other and get along. My husband is the active duty military member and he also agrees that he is unaware of any racial profiling. There is a wide variety of cultures within the United States Military. Just in my husband’s unit there is a Native American, Arabic, African American, Filipino, and Hispanic. However, I grew up in a little town in North East Texas. Atlanta, Texas consists of about 6,000 people. Logging and farming make up the economics of this southern piney woods community. Every Friday night you can find most of the citizens at the hometown football game supporting the players and the band. Though it may seem that everyone gets along in this town and for the most part they do, segregation is evident. The ethnicity that is in Atlanta, Texas is 67.1 percent White, 29.2 percent Black, 1.7 percent Hispanic, 1.1 percent of two or more races, 0.5 percent of American alone, 0.4 percent of Asian alone, and 0.02 percent of other race alone (Atlanta, Texas, 2010). These statistics do not show this town to be very diverse. Caddo Indians once occupied the area for centuries before Europeans arrived, but they abandoned the region in the late eighteenth century because of disease and threats by other...
