I have been treated like a child my whole life. That all changed when I went to Scotland because my grandmother was having a knee operation. I knew it’ll be my responsibility to take care of her after the hospital. The day grandmother was coming home I cleaned the whole house from the bedrooms to the bathroom. I never really would clean the house but it was showing how responsible I was starting to become. The next day I actually felt like I can take responsibility for what I do, usually grandmother would go and pick up my four year old cousin from school and that would mean she would have to walk. She actually went one day without telling me and I told her next time to let me go get her. She didn’t say anything after that I went to go get her from school everyday. Grandmother had to walk for at least 15 minutes so I decided to go with her on walks, which I usually don’t do but I mean what if she fell and she needed help, and I wanted to grow a better relationship with her. After grandmothers knee felt better we went to London for a week for a wedding and to see my cousins newborn baby. When we were there the only thing I did was care for the baby because her mother didn’t exactly know how to take care of a newborn so I helped. My aunt would have to take care of the baby but then she would have to go to work so I told my aunt to let me do the housework and she can go and relax. It felt good to know that you actually can help others without even knowing it. Me, I usually keep to myself when I wasn’t with my siblings and parents. Throughout my 5 months spent with my aunts and grandparents I have learnt to express myself more and to get involved in the chores that need to be done that others can’t do. When I came back from Scotland surprisingly things did change in the house and at school. There was no way I was going to let anyone stop me from being me. I took...

My Life to Save

...Prologue I leaned over the toilet for the fourth time this morning spilling whatever was left in my stomach. I dry heaved for the next five minutes trying to rid whatever was giving me this ill feeling. Once I finished I wiped the sweat off my forehead and laid back against my cold tub. It felt good against my warm skin. I removed my sweat drenched shirt and just laid against the tile floor. I have never experience such pain and nausea in my life. I didn’t want to think about the many possibilities that could be wrong with me. "Ki you alright?" asked my eight year old brother behind my bathroom door. "Yes boo just go get me a bottle of water." I could hear him scurrying off down the stairs to the kitchen. I tried my best to stand up but I just felt too weak. All of a sudden my body grew very tired and I couldn’t get my body to move. I heard my door open and a scream. "Mom, Dad hurry!" yelled my brother Jasone. I didn’t understand why he was screaming until I followed his horrified eyes down to my floor and there was blood everywhere. I slowly reached up to touch my nose and I felt the blood all over my hands and I knew something was definitely wrong. My brother rushed over to me and held my head in his lap as he cried. I tried to reach up and touch him but it all hurt too much. "Lord please I’m not ready to die." I said to myself. "Mom!!" my brother cried out again. "Jasone what is you doing in your sister room and screaming on-" she couldn’t continue her sentence as......

My Approach to Life

...What is Your Approach to Life? By DeAnn Adler After many years of living, I still don’t have life completely figured out and I’m assuming I never will, but age has given me some wisdom and I have hopefully learned a few things in all that time. I have not one philosophy of life, but many, and all of them put together make me the person I am today. During my senior year in high school over thirty-two years ago, the teacher in my civics class asked what we students thought was the secret to a happy life. A blond, curly headed boy in the class answered that he thought “everything in moderation” was the key to a successful, happy life. I’ve never forgotten those words, even after all this time, and they’ve become a part of who I am and how I’ve lived my life. In ancient Greece, the temple of Apollo at Delphi bore the inscription Meden Agan - 'Nothing in excess'. 1 The ancient Greeks knew what my high school classmate had—that moderation makes life run more smoothly. Moderation in this day and age is not always hip though. What are cool are extremes, from extreme sports to extreme home makeovers. But it seems that for a lot of people, straying from the path of moderation causes nothing but heartache, from the drinker who loses everything to the bottle, to the gambler who loses his life’s savings. The more extreme our wants, the more we must accumulate to make ourselves happy. But I also think moderation can make for an extremely boring life. It’s a life played safely and without...

Science in My Daily Life

...Science in my daily life As the Earth completes yet another turn around it axis, the sunlight pours into my bedroom indicating it is time to wake up. In case I miss the hint, my alarm clock set, as usual, for seven o’clock will do the trick. I get up and enter the bathroom, pleasantly warm thanks to the radiator fed with hot water through a series of pipes connected to a central heating boiler. I remain a couple of extra minutes under the shower enjoying the warm water – courtesy again of my boiler -, and finally I am ready to get dressed, opting for a suit cut out of one of these new fabrics that are comfortable, warm and light all at the same time. In the kitchen, I prepare breakfast for four. I turn on the electric kettle to boil water for tea, while a jar of milk heats in the microwave. I turn on the gas oven to warm up the brioche I baked yesterday. It smells delicious and it looks even better, golden and spongy due to the work of yeast. And, while the rest of the family comes down to have breakfast, I turn on the radio to listen to the latest news around the Globe. I have been awaken for just some twenty minutes and science is all around me: the movement of planets, the electricity, the water treatment, the transformation and piping of the gas we use to cook and heat out homes, the chemistry behind new fabrics, the radio waves or the power of the small fungi we use for our pastries. Whatever I do, whatever I see, science is at the heart of everything. And the......

My Philosophy of Life

...Nowadays, in the XXIst century people are living life of the constant pursuit for money, successful career, what is making impression that only those values are important. Than they have to stop for a while and contemplate about their life goals, their life philosophy. This essay will present my philosophy of life. First of all, the most important thing for me is my family. According to my rules, they are always on the first place, and can count on me, just the same like I can count on them. I was raised by my parents to be a good man who tries to be always kind and helpful for the other people and live in harmony with commandments of my religion. The next thing about my philosophy of life is a proper attitude what means that I have a lot of faith in myself and I am taking challenges with believing in final success. Optimism is very important in man’s life and we cannot forget about it, because it helps in bearing up with difficulties. Having friends is also important; however, the point is to choose wisely and surround yourself with well-wishing and loyal people which won’t stab you in the back when you will need help. My philosophy of life tells that I always have to be myself and listen to my heart as much as I listen to my mind and to play along with the voice of my conscience. I believe, that man should develop himself, every time try to experience something new and always use an opportunity to increase his knowledge in order to be conscious and intelligent. Summing......

Someone Who Influenced My Life

...Why would an author of a book influence me so much? It is because Daniel Quinn has written "My Ishmael" in such a beautiful way that what he's thinking comes across to you like as though you're having a conversation in person with him. He uses a talking Gorilla as a means to convey his points of view on how the world is in a degenerative mode and though I felt this strange at first, it became clear later as to why he used a Gorilla in the first place. The Gorilla here represents nature's voice and is a reminder that we need to look for ways to communicate with nature, first hand. This was the first eye opening aspect from the author. The second was the author's penchant for coming up with brilliant stories to derive and communicate his point to the reader. Instead of driving in his philosophies by pure theory would have been boring and heavy, but the author uses wonderful and thought provoking stories to do the same, so effectively. The first was the simple concept of food kept under lock and key. This is a practice that comes so naturally to us, but he brings out why this is a very unnatural way of things. For early man, what grew in the world belonged to everyone in the society, and to put it under lock and key is to basically create a working class who will do tasks, useful or useless, in order to earn their bread. Ishmael's (the name of the gorilla) teachings turn toward the subject of formal education, which he argues is merely a way to keep children out of the......

Live My Life to the Fullest

...What is our purpose of life? Where did we come from? What makes us who we are? These are just some questions that are frequently asked in our society. Is there a right or wrong answer? I don’t think we will ever know. There are many different beliefs, such as existentialist philosophies, scientific, and religious. Each one has a different answer to those questions. Some of the first true existentialist thinkers were a man named Soren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche. They both challenged he foundations of Christianity and traditional morality. “Nietzsche was interested in the enhancement of individual and cultural health, and believed in life, creativity, power, and the realities of the world we live in, rather than those situated in a world beyond” (Nietzsche 1). I feel that he was right, many people get caught up in what is going to happen in the future that they miss out on present. Why live a life if all a person is going to worry about is the unknown? “Kierkegaard said that is it especially important for people to have a meaningful existence. And meaning, he said, comes from whether or not people sense that their lives have a permanent significance. The problem is, though, that most people believe that their lives have importance only temporarily” (Kierkegaard 1). I agree with this completely, I feel without having meaning in life we would have nothing to live for. Many people believe that our purpose of life is already chosen for us. I on the other hand don’t......

The Greatest Experience of My Life

...Avisek Parajuli The Process of Writing Prof. Michael Lally Narrative Essay 11/2/2013 The Greatest Experience of my Life “The biggest risk in life is not taking any risk.” Mountaineering is a risk, a danger , fun and a learning about life. It was a feeling of great joy and achievement at the summit - a triumphant success - after overcoming danger, fear, and risk of death. With the purpose of having fun and spending our time, my two cousins, Avinash and Avijit. and I planned to go for trekking to the world’s biggest mountain pass, Thorung La Pass. It was a breathtaking experience. In the beginning of our journey, it was fun. But ‘danger’ and ‘risk’ is a part of every trekking and we soon came to know this as we went higher altitude. Also the immature leadership and dispute between us led to the problem that we had never faced before. “How far is it now?” Avinash asked in a hushed tone. ”Probably, 2 hours more.”. I replied. It was the first day of our trekking and we were tired walking continuously for 7 hours. The weight of the trekking bag and boots added the exhaustion making every one of us look pale. We were all full of sweat. It was soon going to be night so we had to walk fast. Suddenly the weather became a bump on our road. The weather turned blustery. It started lightening and thundering with heavy squall. We were in dilemma how to handle the situation. But then I saw a small hut in the jungle, we......

Nature vs Nture of My Life

...Nurture Of My Life The natural characteristics of a person can either be quite similar or quite different to the unnatural characteristics of a person. The natural characteristics of a person are the traits that come from their parents; the ones that people are born with which are genetically. These traits are developed biologically. The unnatural characteristics of a person, or the nurtured characteristics, are the traits that people develop themselves after they are born. The environment of a person’s life greatly determines their personality. The traits a person has that they weren’t born with are the traits that the environment has influenced on them. There are many traits that I have inherited naturally through genetics from my mom and dad. I can tell that my work ethic has been inherited from my dad because he is a very hard worker and I also strive to achieve my personal best. My mom tends to be very sensitive at times and concerned for other people’s feelings, which I know, I have inherited. I have also inherited my dad’s super mathematical skills and my mom’s loving abilities. I can also tell that I have inherited a good sense of well being from my mom. There are also many behaviors that I have developed from the environment I grew up in. I have learned to respect all people from being influenced at school and by my parents. I’ve also been trained to be responsible of things such as doing my work. I learned that if I am not responsible and don’t do my work, then......

How the Military Influenced My Life

...Influenced My Life “How The Military Influenced My Life” To really understand the significance of how the military shaped me into the person I am today, I must first reveal some insight into the person I was before I left for basic training. When I graduated high school in 1985 I was indestructible ready to take on anything that came my way. I had led a somewhat sheltered life in that my parents provided a warm loving environment for my siblings and myself. Yes we experienced the normal trials and tribulations as any other kid, but we really had no negative or significant emotional events growing up that directly effected our development. Rather it was the lack of these incidents that gave us a naive outlook on life and all the responsibilities it entails. This Cognitive development prior to my experiences in the military left me with a positive outlook on life and its possibilities yet, wholly unprepared for life in its reality. As I stated earlier, when I graduated from High school, I didn’t have a care in the world. My biggest worry was where I wanted to play baseball, and where I was going out that weekend. I was given a car for graduation as well as a credit card for gas. After graduation I received a baseball scholarship and didn’t have to worry about how to pay for school. This along with other things that I had taken for granted led me to believe that the whole world was peachy with nothing negative that would affect me. The only trauma in my life was if a......
