The Third Man, was filmed in post World War II Vienna, releasing in 1949. The film was written by Graham Greene, directed by Carol Reed, and produced by the American David Selznick and the British Michael Korda. The black and white, pessimistic film “is one of the greatest British thrillers of the post-war era, in the best Alfred Hitchcock tradition, and beautifully produced….It was voted the #1 British Film of the 20th Century” (Tim Dirkes, Filmsite Review) Holly Martins, the unemployed American writer of western novels, comes to Vienna out of disparity. Holly gets invited to Vienna to work by his childhood friend, Harry Lime: It is their friendship that illustrates the disparity in the post World War II era, it describes the deception in people, the lack of morality, and friendship: the underlying plot and theme of the film in The Third Man.

1) How do the producers utilize the setting to make the audience feel the hopelessness in Post-War era, to accent the themes of deception, friendship, and morality in the film? 2) How does the characterization of Holly Martins show the real-life historical attitude of the average person in the post war era,? 3) How does the conflict express the themes in the Third Man? 4) Why is the theme of the movie most important vs. setting, conflict and characterization? In The Third Man, themes of the movie are expressed incoherently though setting, characterization, and conflict. The key element to understanding the theme throughout the movie is to see where and how the producers utilized the setting, conflict, and characterization to undertone the real meaning of the film. Theme is the most important literary element in The Third Man. It explores a basic understanding in the attitudes of the post World War Viennese people, and surrounding cultures: deception, friendship, and morality.

Living on My Own

...In the summer of 2010 leading into my junior of year of high school my mother and I had a lot of altercations. We kept having disagreements about what time I came into the house at night, me always having company, and me never cleaning up my room. My mother and I weren’t the only ones having this disagreement. I had four cousins who were having the same exact debates with their mothers, who were my aunts. My mother and Aunts all sat down and discussed the matter. They came up the solution of us having our own apartment. When they brought the idea to us five we all agreed that it were a great plan. Us having our own apartment meant that we could do what we wanted when we wanted without our mothers nagging us about every little thing. We knew we were going to have fun, but we also knew we had responsibilities that had to be taken care of. We all agreed to do our part and chip in where we were needed. It was time to prove to our mothers we were old enough and mature enough to be on our own and make the right decisions. Frenchie, Dj, Crap, Jamarcus, and I moved in on July 21, 2010. We were going to be staying in Hill Top Apartments, apartment 312. The apartment had 3 rooms, 2 bathrooms, a full kitchen, and a living area. Since Dj was the oldest he got a room to himself. Jamarcus and I shared a room and Frenchie and Crap shared the other. We had two cars amongst us, mines and Jamarcus’s. Since we were on our own we tried to save as much money as possible so we......

My Own View or Reality

...My View of Reality In my journey in finding the nature of reality, I have encountered philosophers of different views. There is Parmenides who says that the real is being(one) which is permanent; on the other hand, Heraclitus says what is real is becoming which is changing. While Plato who sided with Parmenides says what is real is the world of Forms, the world that reflects our world today. However, Aristotle says that the real are matter and form. Furthermore, Levinas stresses the importance of the other as if your relationship with the other helps you fulfill your being a person. That is really true if you will live it. Another philosopher, St. Thomas Aquinas says what is real is being “that which exists” wherein his essence and existence is a participation or came from the Pure Act/ God who acted his act of existence. On the other hand, Heidegger makes a turn of these Western views of metaphysics. Heidegger claims that what is real is that the nothing which makes being possible and reality is the unfolding and keeping of Being. Thus, for Heidegger reality is whole and dynamic. This is compared to Buddhistic view of reality. Buddhism believes that reality is interdependently arising which is impermanent and no separation. Moreover, Derrida adds something. He believes that meaning is impossible for no matter how you process to signify the meaning of something, you could not really get the meaning of that something. So, what......

My Foavirite Person

...My favorite Poet Throughout the twenty one years of my life. I have had the privilege of knowing about many poets and dramatists. However, there is one particular poet whose name is etched in my memory. Whenever somebody asks about my favorite poet, his name will automatically flash into my mind. He is Michael Madhusudan Dutt, was a popular 19th century Bengali poet, dramatist and the first sonnet writer in Indian Subcontinent. Michael Madhusudan Dutt was born in Jessore District, East Bengal, India (now in Bangladesh). His early schooling was in Bengali and Persian. In 1837 he entered Hindu College where most of his education was in English. Early exposure to English education and European literature at home and in Kolkata made him desire to emulate the proverbially stiff upper-lip Englishman in taste, manners and intellect. One of the early impressions was that of his teacher, Capt. D.L.Richardson at Hindu College. His adolescence, coupled with the spirit of intellectual enquiry convinced him that he was born on the wrong side of the planet, and that conservative Hindu society in early nineteenth century Bengal had not yet developed the spirit of rationalistic enquiry and appreciation of greater intellectual sophistry to appreciate his talents. He espoused the view that free thinking and post Enlightenment West would be more receptive to his intellectual acumen and creative genius. In this, perhaps he forgot the color of his skin, as he was to realize later on in life...

Important Person in My Life

...An important person in your life Everybody has an important person in their life who can motivate, share moment and be there for them when they needed. I think the most important person in the life of everyone is the member of his family. The simple word “family” can conjure up many meanings, images and emotions. They could be warm and pleasant, at the same time they can be sad and dismal. But for most, the word “family” is one of the greatest words in the world, it brings a lot of unforgettable and joyful memories about their childhood and past, enormous number of happy and funny moments, and of course it brings the picture of your family members, whom you truly love, who really mean a lot for you and who are the most influential and important people in your life. Your family members simply cared about you when you were sick even if it meant staying up all the night just to make sure your fever stayed down. There were also times when they let you make your own choices and allowed you to suffer the consequences it brings if you made a bad decision. Sometimes they pushed you in certain directions and had high expectations for you. Your family is not only people that you biologically related to and those who will love you unconditionally, but they are your first friends, whom you can trust and always count on when you need them. Family members have the biggest influence on you, through their love, discipline, encouragement and living. One of the important persons in the......

Pathways that are wide and lead directly to the doors suggest the client is accessible, open and direct. In contrast, the absence of a pathway indicates the client may be closed, distant and removed. The presence of grass beside the house suggests defensiveness. TREE: The trunk can be seen as representing inner strength, self-esteem, and intactness of the personality. The use of faint sketchy lines to represent the trunks indicates a sense of vulnerability, passivity, and insecurity. These same concerns might also be represented by shading trunk, or lines that are heavily reinforced or perforated. My Own Business

...Week 7 / Report 2… My Own Business…”Yoga for Anyone” N/A Parkville University Abstract This paper explores the process I took to decide what business to choose and marketing strategies of said business I want to start. I selected one in a fast-growing arena of health improvement; and I will achieve it by offering everything there is to know about Yoga. It addresses several aspects of a marketing plan from how I arrive at this possibility to applying the marketing mix in the Four P’s of product, price, promotion, and place. Finally, I describe a layout over viewing why my website will succeed throughout product life-cycle. My Own Business: “Yoga for Anyone” Deciding upon a business is not something I did not go into lightly or taken on a dare. I gave it much thought, would research heavily through both the use of secondary and primary research marketing methods, and then send through the rigorous trials and tribulations of product and / or service life cycle. Main thing I understood it is not as simple as choosing something I thought in terms of…if I have a passion for it, everyone should share in my passion, and it is the latest and greatest craze; therefore, I must “jump on the bandwagon” and have one as well. Although, both of these ideas have some credence in marketing, because I had to believe in what I did and be marketable, respectively, it is not as glib or easy as the aforementioned old adages imply. I took all of this into consideration when I......

Many of the white papers read elaborated on topics discussed in the DQ like the importance of bandwidth, 2.4 GHz interference, and standards. A point that caught my attention after researching for my team paper was the proliferation of wireless technologies, and the question how can one incorporates this raising technologies into a well established wired network prompt me to look for an answer. ...University of Phoenix Nursing 587/Leadership and Management in Nursing and Healthcare Marcia Lyles, MSN, EDD, PhD. January 5, 2006 Personal Leadership Development Plan It has been my experience that health care professionals as well as consumers are becoming more verbal about the inadequacies of the health care system. It is clear that improvement is necessary. There are many roads to improvement of the system, one of which is the proper use of the Advance Nurse Practitioner. With this role properly developed, the Advanced Nurse Practitioner can effect many changes both in and out of the hospital setting. It is for this reason that I chose to advance my practice as a nurse. As an advanced practice clinician, I will be able to make a difference in the community by contributing to the enlargement of the primary care workforce to meet the population’s primary care needs. Within the next five years, I view myself in an advanced practice role, that of a Nurse Practitioner serving the adult population in an outpatient clinical setting. As an advanced practice clinician and leader, my efforts will be directed at ensuring that effective health care is provided to the patients that will result in improved quality and health outcomes. At the local level, I will have a strong influence on my team in my area of clinical practice. This involves identifying the steps required to develop excellence in care for a group of patients such as skilled assessments, research-based......

My Most Influential Person

...The most influential person in my life is my mother. She taught me how to keep loving through the good and the bad. My mothers love is unconditional, it is a trait i wish to equip throughout my life. I was about 13 when I found out that my mother loved me unconditionally. The moment I lost my mothers necklace (that my grandmother gave to her) I thought she was going to kill me. I had never seen my mother so mad at me. I began to cry as she was yelling at me;I ran into my room, closed the door, and wept all night. The next day my mom walked into my room and told me she was sorry with the most regretful look on her face. I knew my mother was truly sorry. As we hugged in closure, she started to cry on my shoulder. I told my mom I will do anything to find it, but my mothers response was "That necklace will never amount to how much I love you". I will forever be amazed about my mothers love and care for me. She is also incredible at getting things done. It does not matter of the situation, my mother always comes through with whatever was needed. She puts others needs before hers and I love that about her. Whenever someone asks for something, she is always the first one to deliver. When I play softball we usually have 2 games a day, during these games somebody always runs out of water. My mother being the caring person she is, offers to go buy them water from a store near by. During are breaks between games she rushes to go get water. When she returns she comes back with water,......

Evaluating My Own Ability

...Becoming an Effective Leader Understanding my own ability to fulfil key responsibilities of the leadership role. 1.1 Evaluating my own ability: Before deciding which indicative leadership styles are best suited in different situations with different people, one must understand the key responsibilities of the leadership role in terms of influencing real change and a paradigm shift within the environment in which they operate. Whereas managers are in the main operationally driven and transactional, both essential attributes in providing business consistency, effective leaders are transformational in so far as they focus on people by providing inspiration, motivation and influencing as they go. Managers will focus on doing things right by following the rules through planning, organising, exercising control and directing operations. Leaders on the other hand will focus on doing the right thing by applying less rigidity, influencing people to be more participative and provide meaningful input, thus helping the individual build and grow in confidence. This can only work when the leader is willing to delegate and allow the team to be part of the decision making process. In my own role I’ve had to learn through time that showing empathy and listening to gain trust and build rapport with employees in my teams are the cornerstones. My modus operandi was always based on nurturing these two vital ingredients in order to bring those capable of delivering the objectives and......

...The two items I picked to experiment was spreading my belongings so as to occupy too much space and standing and talking with other people and not occupying too much space. In my algebra class, 3 of us sit at a table, with just enough personal space for our textbooks and notebooks. When I arrived to class, the other two people were already at the table, they are a brother and sister. I haven’t spoke too much with them because the class just started 3 weeks ago and with lecture going on, there isn’t much time to talk. After I sat down, I pulled my textbook, notebook and calculator out and placed them on the table. As the lecture started, I appeared to be writing notes in my notebook and reading from the textbook. As I did this, I intentionally moved them out to occupy more of the space from the guy sitting next to me. I noticed as I moved them inch by inch, he would move his items back away inch by inch, giving me more space. Over the next hour, I did this more and more, until I occupied at least half of his space. He occasionally started throwing me dirty looks, but didn’t say much. I could tell he was getting irritated. As I moved my items another couple inches towards him, he finally asked me what my problem was. I said sorry and that I didn’t realize my books were so far in his area. He said that he wondered how I couldn’t of noticed that, he was getting squished. I then explained the experiment to him, and he laughed and said that he was really starting to get pissed off...
