Assignment #3: 1. Take a look at this list of words: Apple Alligator Angry Ambulance Apologize 2. Can you make this list like a story? If yes, write one.

|A Very Short Story |
|by JFM |
| |
|Looking at the fruits’ stall, the smell of apples got his attention. He pauses… faces the stall and places his basket on the floor. He was fascinated by|
|its colors, of red and green… the smell of its fragrance… he imagines himself holding it, caressing, pressing tenderly, and slowly biting it… |
| |
|Somebody pushes him… its one from the crowd who’s in a hurry passing by the market. Three old women grabbed his attention. They are looking at the |
|newspaper headline, with a photo of a woman, whose name appeared “Napoles”. “Gahaman, sakim, buwaya!” the oldest of them exclaimed. Beside her photo, is|
|a caricature of an alligator… |
| |
|The people are extremely angry, they are mad… You could sense the feeling of hatred and anger into their blood, amidst the air. They look at the |
|newspaper; as if they want to kill… if not only with the approaching ambulance… their attention will never be gone. |
| |
|“Are you buying it?” the vendor asked him. He then noticed the apple he was handling... He apologized, returned it, and left. |

3. Now try changing the order of the words. Does this alter the story? Write one.

You can see in the second revision that there is an employment of “irony” as an element of style in writing a narrative. Most of the statements are not consistent with their thoughts and do not make sense as well. Try to study this diagram below:

|Original Version |Revised |Description/Event |
| | | |
|apples |alligators |“…fascinated by its colors, of red and green… the smell of its |
| | |fragrance… he imagines himself holding it, caressing, pressing |
| | |tenderly, and slowly biting it…” |
| | | |
|alligator |apple |“Beside her photo, is a caricature of an _” |
| | | |
|angry |apologizing |“…they are mad… You could sense the feeling of hatred and anger |
| | |into their blood, amidst the air. They look at the newspaper; as|
| | |if they want to kill…” |
| | | |
|ambulance |angry |“…if not only with the approaching _… their attention will never|
| | |be gone.” |
| | | |
|apologize |ambulanced |“Are you buying it?” the vendor asked him. He then noticed the |
| | |apple he was handling... He _, returned it, and left.” |

An alligator is a large reptile: a large reptile that lives near water, has thick scaly skin, powerful jaws, a long tail, and a shorter and broader snout than a crocodile. Native to: southern United States, China. (Microsoft Encarta 2009). It’s an animal, the usual skin color is brown not green or red. The guy cannot bite it, it might be the other way around. Therefore, it doesn’t make sense at all. A caricature of apple in number two above is something which is positive, which distorts the meaning of being “gahaman, akim at buwaya” (greedy and selfish). Again, it doesn’t make sense at all. The third statement doesn’t support the idea of somebody who is apologizing. Apology requires humility. It’s the other way around for the people there are “mad”. The next term after the word “approaching” should be a noun because it’s an adjective. It can never be another modifier for it is not an adverb. Finally, there is no such word as “ambulanced”. It is not a verb so it can never have a form of “d”. Again, it doesn’t make sense at all.

To sum it all up, when order of the words is altered, it distorts not only the syntax (sentence) but also the semantics (meaning). Although it’s narrative and fiction, it must still make sense to the readers. Otherwise, it will be meaningless to them.

4. Try to explain what happened when you made a story from the list of words. For example, did you try to imagine the characters, develop the plot, or imagine where the story took place?

First, I considered the possibilities of connecting the terms above into one narrative. It’s more challenging as compared to free writing in which you don’t have particular elements to consider. Just free thoughts. I considered the characters and their characterization. I made sure that they are not too specific so the readers will let themselves infer on their characterizations and personalities as well. The setting must create an atmosphere which is scattered, but consistent. Just like the flow of events or the plot structures. Notice the use of ellipses in the story. It allows the readers to pause and imagine is happening in between. The conflict is presented or exposed in the ending which is not a usual plot structure. I think that makes this story unique for it opens a lot of consciousness about what’s happening.

Lastly, the lesson is not explicitly stated. It is implied. It allows the readers to ask themselves about the author’s purpose of writing it. This in the end will let them reread the story for several times.

Personal Narrative: My First Paper

...My first paper was a little rocky. At first I could not settle with a topic. When I would start to write a paper I would think it was not good enough and change it to something else. I changed my paper three different times. It was just hard for me to get started and it was also hard narrowing down my topic because I felt like what I was talking about was so broad. Turns out when I finally picked my topic my paper was headed in all the wrong directions. I ended up having to change a lot of things. When I went to Professor Warfield’s office hours it did help me but I was still a little discouraged that I would never get my paper right. I am still trying to keep a positive mind frame and I am hoping for the best with my grade. Overall I learned...

My Special Interest Research Paper

...My special interest is writing. Through elementary, middle, and high school I have improved my writing skills. When it comes to writing, I like to put my imagination or a past experience in a story with characters that reflect the people who I have encountered throughout my life. At a young age, I remember starting my own book. It was nothing special but about a girl's struggles growing up in a big family. The characters that I incorporated were about my own family, my friends, and even strangers that I would see around stores. I wrote about one hundred pages in less than three months. That didn't stop there, I remember that even as young as I was I would take inspiration from just about anything to write a story. For example, I once had an...

My Lai Massacre Research Paper

...The My Lai Massacre took place on March 16, 1968. The Massacre was a horrific event during the Vietnam War. At the beginning of the war, the American soldiers didn’t ever see their enemy. They would fall into poison bungee sticks, and were taken back to an American base for treatment; that is one way that the Americans lost some of their men. Another way that they lost soldiers, was that they would run into landmines. When the My Lai Massacre took place, the American soldiers were advised to kill anyone in the village, treating them as if they were all part of the Vietnamese military. The My Lai Massacre took place shortly after the Tet Offensive (which is another war in Vietnam). It was a bad part of American history because there were so...

All My Sons Reaction Paper

...Through his character, Chris Keller, in the play All My Sons, the playwright Arthur Miller he explores the theme of accountability and responsibility of man which is as universal and relevant today as it was in the post WWII era. Chris Keller calls for corporate responsibility and the human universality of man looking out for man. As humans we have a highly developed brain, capable of abstract reasoning, language, and problem solving, with this in mind if we are smart enough to start of businesses then we should be responsible for the effects they cause. What does it mean to say that "business" has responsibilities? Only people can have responsibilities. A corporation is an artificial person and in this sense may have artificial responsibilities, but "business" as a whole cannot be said to have responsibilities, even in this vague sense(Friedman, Milton). Joe Keller owned a small factory that manufactured many spare parts and Steve was working for him. During the war the factory manufactured cylinder heads for the Air Force planes. One day they shipped some bad parts to the Army which resulted in the crash of twenty-one planes and the death of their pilots. That was a great scandal. Both Joe and Steve were arrested and brought up to trial for that terrible crime. Joe was clever enough to get off with it. He proved to the court that he had nothing to do with the shipped those bad cylinders. Life is full of many hard decisions that people have to take, often on the...

My Big Fat Greek Wedding Refletion Paper

...Eunhye Kim May 18, 2016 After Watching “My Big Greek Wedding” The movie “My Big Greek Wedding” is about the wedding between Tula, who is a Greek-American and was wearing out of fashion style and Ian who is local American white man. Even if now she is in her early thirties, her mother and father want to find a husband in hoping of sending her to Greece. At this time, she meets a perfect guy who is American. The major conflict in this movie came out after she met him. In this movie, there are a lot of cultural things that have learned in this class. For example, dominant culture, a minority group, oppression, culture difference, and collectivism. Here are the reasons why I thought of many those concepts. First of all, this movie showed the family living in America with Greek culture, showing dominant culture and a minority group. At the start of this movie, it illustrated how this girl had grown up in America. Since this Greek family immigrated to America, the dominant culture is American culture. So, Tula was illustrated adjusting in American culture was hard, avoiding other American girls. However, her family was different. Even if they are in American, they didn’t remove their own culture, especially their house. In the movie, they lived in normal Chicago town. Whereas other houses are similar with American traditional style house, her family houses are similar with the temple of the Parthenon. Indeed, they always have their meal with Greek food. In this point, even...

Torture

...12 December 2012 Writing Process My personal writing process is probably somewhat similar to what other students do for theirs, because we may have been taught similar ways. I have my writing process broken down into a few different parts. First, I do research and gather information if research is necessary to the paper’s topic. Then, I would start writing the introduction to the paper. Next, I do the actual writing of the paper and describe each topic in more detail. The last step is to, I revise it in case of any errors. I also revise it to make it better. Each step is important in order to make my writing good. I will discuss in depth and detail about each part of my writing process. As soon as I get the topic and know what I am to write about, I think to myself of some of the ideas that I have that could relate to this piece of writing. Often times, I come up with a story in my own life that can relate or something that I know of that can influence my paper to have more meaning, not only to the reader, but also to me. It will make writing the paper easier if you can make a connection to the topic and relate it to yourself somehow. If I don’t really have a way to connect it I just brainstorm for things or ideas that can be included or used in the piece. I make a list of things pertaining to the paper so I can go through the list easier. If it is a really detailed piece, I sometimes use the web process. If it is necessary to the paper, I will research the topic and try to...

Personal Narrative: Art Censorship

Now I find myself enjoying some of the writing tasks. I still think some papers are pointless, but I have started to enjoy prompts such as narrative writing. In fact, I have even started to write my own story for fun. As a writer, I’d say I use pretty good language. I can describe things well, I’m good at organization, but I can improve on all of these. I also need to work on concentrating so that I don’t have to work late. A writer always has room to grow. While one may be excellent in some parts of writing, they’re not the best at everything. My Aproach to Writing

...Yessenia Amaya My approach to writing I have many goals for my English course, and one of those goals is to get into the habit of writing more. By getting into the habit of writing more I am going to accomplish my second goal which is to fix my spelling and grammar. For example learn where to put my commas and periods and learn how to spell words I don’t really use. Another major goal I have for this course is to learn how to target my audience, learn who my audience is and write to the appeal of that audience. My final goal and the most important goal I have for this course is to get an A+. My plan is to try and hand in everything on time and not miss a class. I hope I can accomplish these goals. I also always set up goals when writing an academic paper. For example, I try and get the least grammar spelling errors as possible. I also set goals to finish my papers a paper a certain time so I have time to proofread and revise my paper. And the most important goal I set when I write is to hand in my paper on time. With these goals I hope to get a better grade. I have many challenges when I write. My biggest challenges when writing for others is trying not to have many grammars and spelling errors, but I always do. Another challenge I have is that I don’t know if I’m getting through to my audience or not. I’m also always concerned if I’m giving enough information to the person I’m writing to, in other words being informative. And my biggest challenge might be that the...
