It wasn’t the most eloquent choice of words but my roommate Nolan had a point. ‘… What I mean is that you are not a classical type of person; you’re on your way to become a politician and an aspiring scientist and a philanthropist like Bill Gates. You have potential but you don’t flaunt it. You are contradiction…’ His point verged on being a compliment. Laughing at his observation I responded to Nolan: ‘Well Nolan, I am a product of my own environment.’

According to the Oxford English Language Dictionary, a scientist is ‘a person who is studying or has excellent knowledge of one or more of the natural or physical sciences’. From my perspective, this definition fails to point out the real function of a scientist for a society. Real scientists are the ones that are like Leonardo Da Vinci. You may again say that Leonardo Da Vinci was not the scholar of a certain science, as none of his researches have been published in journals. But with his groundbreaking work, he has inspired numerous scientists, investigators to concentrate on science in an era like middle age that was full of myths and scholastic pressures. The term ‘renaissance man’ is what people call these types of people. A Renaissance man is someone who has enough expertise in STEM fields and humanities that he can innovate and link his innovations to the society. What makes a Renaissance man distinct is that they can link their innovations and these innovations do not just mean science, but also create sociological revolutions. And the Renaissance man is the one and only type of scientist who can achieve high quality disruptive innovation. During my time at high school, I have tried to become a renaissance man like Da Vinci as I struggled to get a full understanding of life sciences and social sciences, so that I can innovate well and in addition to that link my innovations to real …show more content…
While I could apply my knowledge I got to learn how to make targeted information research, as our field was complex and broad ranged. By my work I have got to meet with the world’s leading biomedical engineer doing research on microfluidics, Mehmet Toner. I rushed to meet him at MEF University science fair and I have deepened my connections with him when I was in Boston this summer. Currently I am still in touch with him and he is advising me on my academic life and about my new research project that is again about microfluidics but this time we are trying to diagnose three distinct cancer types on one microchip. Getting the chance to see how he works and his labs I am really inspired to pursue Biomedical Engineering with a focus on a specialist field like Stem Cell Biology at Harvard or MIT. My long termed goal is to pursue MD-PHD at an American Medical School like Johns Hopkins or again Harvard and then combine my medical knowledge with biomedical engineering to take new steps towards innovation in life sciences.

As I got to know develop a good foundation in research and sciences I was partially ready for becoming a renaissance man. But a renaissance man does not just research as I have said he knows how to explain his points really well and he can lead teams. To develop this trait I have been involved in social activities a lot. I also

My Passion For Forensic Science

...disappear. My goal is to make everyone i meet feel empowered according to their individuality. “The things that make me different are the things that make me.” My passions for life and personal achievements are what push me over the top. In forensic science, there is DNA profiling that demonstrates this. 99.9% of everyone’s DNA is exactly the same, but the .1% is what makes each individual unique and recognizable in a crowd. The only time I have ever felt intelligent was in my forensic science class, rather than cute. People see my positive personality in a negative situation to be naive, but in a classroom it is seen as leadership. There is a high demand for more forensic scientists especially female...

Personal Narrative: Active Involvement In High School Sports In My Life

...impacted my life, but has inspired thousands of other young people Four years ago, as I began high school, I was acutely aware of the sports culture, as I searched for a suitable student organization to join. Drifting through a maze of school clubs and activities to pursue, I literally ran into a 3-foot tall robot, unaware that this mechanical creature would soon propel me to an intense journey, and the path toward realizing my dream. At that moment, I was not only introduced to the world of robotics, but became aware of Dean Kamen, an individual who has since become the single most inspiring role model in my life....

Chapter 2

...Americans’ personalities in workplace. First one, nothing is impossible. Americans think they can do anything. Afterwards, the author mentioned the second personality of Americans in the workplace, just a matter of effort. In my opinion, the second one is the base of the first one; in other words, Americans believe in themselves, failure is from a lack of effort. They can do anything by hard working. For instance, professor Ross mentioned an example of “nothing is impossible”--in several years ago, Boston Celtics won the champion in NBA, when they were celebrating, KG yelled, “ Nothing is impossible! Nothing is impossible.” It expressed that they trained hardly, and tried their best to win every single game. By the way, I think it was a kind of advertisement, because “Nothing is impossible” is slogan of Adidas, and Adidas was sponsor of KG. Next, the author said that Americans are driven people. Americans very much admire what they call “passion” in their employees. Having passion means being excited and enthusiastic about what you do, but it means something more; people with passion are never satisfied and never give up. (p 27) I want to talk about the difference of passion in employees between Americans and Chinese. I think Americans’ passion in...

Personal Statement

...Passion is the compelling feeling that makes us love something in life. It is passion that makes you wake up early, stay up late and forego short term rewards to keep your long term goals on track. Without passion, no veterinary practitioner can be successful. I ask that you give me the opportunity to utilize my passion and drive to become a veterinarian. When I was seven, my grandparents gave me a horse. From them I learned about feeding, grooming, mucking and riding. Since then I have always been fascinated with farm animals, especially horses. For as long as I can remember I have had a passion for science as well. The application of the principles learned in class requires that you continue to learn. It is the challenge of applying those principles to animal medical issues that has influenced my decision to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. My decision is based on the desire to help animals and to pursue the root causes of the issues found in the ordinary and extraordinary situations a large animal practitioner encounters. I am a highly motivated and methodical person and look forward to the challenges of this difficult coursework and career. At Colorado State University, I was selected to participate in the sought after internship opportunity at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. Seeking to learn firsthand about the real daily life of a large animal veterinarian, I chose to ride and assist Dr. Ken Canterbury as he made his rounds in the Lexington area. I received...

My Leadership Philosophy

...Throughout my life I have been influenced in my leading style by many amazing leaders who I one day aspire to be like. The main influence on my leadership has been my mother, who is a teacher and an amazingly invested leader. She is dedicated to the growth of the people she leads and teaches them to be advocates for themselves and gives them room to learn to develop their own ideas. She is a firm believer in the idea of stewardship, and cares about and gets to know the students she leads. I have also been influenced by several of my science teacher throughout the years, not only to pursue a science career, but also to grow my leadership skills through finding my passion, looking to the future, and learning from my mistakes and growing from...

Dream

...as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of science. Where others see the engineering, experimentation, and presentation of science as a chore, I only see excitement. Even as a child I constantly sought it out, first on television with Bill Nye and The Mythbusters, then later in person in every museum exhibit I could find. Science in all its forms fascinated me, but science projects in particular were a category all to themselves. To me, science projects were a special joy that only grew with time. In fact, it was this continued fascination for hands-on science that brought me years later to the sauna that is the University of Alabama in mid-June. Participating in the Student Science Training Program and working in their lab made me feel like a kid in a candy store. Just the thought of participating in a project at this level of scientific rigor made me forget that this was supposed to be my summer break and I spent the first day eagerly examining every piece of equipment. Even at first, when the whole research group sat there doing rote calculations and others felt like they were staring down the barrel of defeated purpose, I remained enthusiastic. Time and time again I reminded myself of that famous phrase "great effort leads to great rewards," and sure enough, soon my aspirations began to be met. This shift in attitude also coincided with a shift in location: from the computer desk to the laser lab. It was finally time to get my hands dirty. Now things began to get really...

I, a then fifth-grader, watched as the students practice for the NOBCChe National Science Bowl. NOBCChe stands for the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers. My parents were both heavily involved in the program: my mother, a middle school teacher, was a science bowl coach, and my father, a chemical engineer, was a chairman. Degree Plus Experience

...For my Degree Plus Event I went to a science panel. Professionals in the field of science came and allowed us to ask questions on their college experience and what helped them achieve their goals. Some of the new things I learned about being a professional is that it takes time and failure to become one. You can’t wake up one morning and expect to have the skills needed, that’s not how it works. Some of the skills I learned was communication. Communication is a huge part in any field of work not just science. Without the ability to talk in front of people, speak clearly and have intelligent conversations. It will be harder to share your new findings or successes. As well as being unable to advance in any kind of position. The next skill I learned...

Business

...As far back as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with science. I come from a small country in South Asia called Nepal, where I didn’t have access to many opportunities to expand my possibilities academically. I spent hours reading books about the human body, stars, planets and phenomena I could have never imagined. I would go through an encyclopedia in my free time and think about how the protons, electrons, neutrons made up an atom and how the atom contributes to everyday life. As I grew older, my fascination never waned, and I read every single book I could possibly find about science. I had always loved physics: it captured my attention like few things could. I always knew within myself that biology and chemistry were my passion and that only these would satisfy my insatiable curiosity for science. Almost five years ago, when I came to America with my family, I was not proficient in English. I strongly believe that I learned English so quickly because I continuously read books. In high school I have challenged myself by taking high-level classes, even though I lack strong English abilities. My freshman year, I took Pre-Ap biology like any other freshman is expected to,. My curiosity for the human body grew as a result of this class, and I decided to challenge myself by taking AP biology my sophomore year, along with chemistry. During the summer of 2012, I was a member of All Girls Dallas ISD physics camp, which taught me phenomenal things about physics and how...

Macbeth

...Science and mathematics are very intriguing subjects for me in school. In science I have a passion for understanding how the world we live in evolves. I focus very carefully on the microscopic features of this planet, and the very minuscule works of nature. I am so fascinated in knowing how the human body works, and the attentive design that it has. Since my juvenile years, I have had a great interest in visiting science museums and exploring all the different aspects, such as rockets and gravity. I simply have no chance of ever losing curiosity in any facet of science, as there is so much to discover and learn. In science I take pleasure in being given the opportunity to carry out experiments and perceive the answers to questions that enthral me. Every single day I worker harder and harder to improve my understanding of every topic I learn. This is why I believe this STEM programme will allow me to acquire a much larger knowledge of the different details of science that captivate me. I will attend lectures and classes with great pleasure. Everything that this programme offers matches my interests. Mathematics is a subject that will take up most of the details in my future occupation, which is architecture. With my father working as a construction company director, I have the fortunate opportunity to witness and experience the construction world. In my spare time in holidays, I have an enthusiasm to examine all the specific attributes of construction work, such as architectural...

Why Science?

...When I was asked why I chose to study human science, it left me puzzled, it always just seemed like a natural thing for as long as I could remember. I knew I loved it but being put on the spot as to why, really caught me off guard. As I sit here on an upholster chair, under a dim light of a lamp, gazing at the steam over my cup of peppermint tea, I am finding myself really thinking why, looking back on past experiences, what could make me love something so much that I would dedicate my whole life to fulfilling it, then it came to me, clearer than crystal, how could I ever forget? Even though It can get confusing, everyone should study human biology at least once, because it could lead to a a world of possibilities, you never know you might discover your future, it is all happening inside of you every second, rapidly and aggressively, you should know what you are capable of as a human, it’s so beautiful and complex. Up until grade nine, my science was not complex and for lack of a better word, it was boring. It was dinosaurs and food chains, of course we covered the health unit of it all, referring to the birds and the bee’s and the obvious yet traumatizing question all of our parents dread as a child, where do babies come from? Let’s get real though, all that was more awkward than educational. I always wanted to be a teacher, I grew up as the baby of a fairly large family, everyone had something to teach me, I wanted to change it all and be the one finally doing the teaching...

...Wellesley Effect. I heard this phrase a few days ago and it inspired me to rewrite this essay. I watched the video for the campaign and it brought shivers down my spine as I realized everything the Wellesley women were saying is something I would like to get out of college. Wellesley “is the place” where I will be able to become a woman of science and art and sport. Wellesley’s liberal arts education will give me the opportunity to become a well-rounded individual. I will be able to explore my passion for science through the innovative and accessible state-of-the-art equipment, which will allow me to better examine the intricate anatomy of the body, and the complex networks and structures of the brain that fascinate me. After learning about biology, my enthusiasm towards science grew, which drove me to...
