ASSESSING CREDIT MANAGEMENT POLICIES OF BANKS. (A STUDY OF MERCHANT BANK GHANA LIMITED, KOFORIDUA) CHAPTER ONE

1.0 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY Credit does not necessarily require money. The credit concept can be applied in barter economies as well, based on the direct exchange of goods and services (Ingham 2004 p.12-19). Banks' activities can be divided into retail banking, dealing directly with individuals and small businesses; business banking, providing services to mid-market business; corporate banking, directed at large business entities; private banking, providing wealth management services to high net worth individuals and families; and investment banking, relating to activities on the financial markets.
A bank can generate revenue in a variety of different ways including interest, transaction fees and financial advice. The main method is via charging interest on the capital it lends out to customers (George 2000)
Loans are the major asset for most banks. They earn more interest than banks have to pay on deposits, and, thus, are a major source of revenue for a bank. Often banks will sell the loans, such as mortgages, credit card and auto loan receivables, to be securitized into asset-backed securities, which can be sold to investors. This allows banks to make more loans while also earning origination fees and/or servicing fees on the securitized loans. (Spaulding 2005)
Banks face a number of risks in order to conduct their business, and how well these risks are managed and understood is a key driver behind profitability, and how much capital a bank is required to hold. Some of the main risks faced by banks include, credit risk, liquidity risk, market risk operational risk and reputational risk.
The goal of credit risk management is to maximise a bank's risk-adjusted rate of return by maintaining credit risk exposure...

...since these are always inherently associated with human beings. The major biometric features include voice, face, fingerprint, irises, retinas, palmprint, signature, and so on. In general, there are two types of biometric systems: identification for identifying an unknown biometric token as belonging to one of people (registered in the system) and verification for accepting or rejecting the identity claim of a person based on an input biometric token. Due to the tragedy of 11th September 2001 in New York City and 7th July 2005 in London, automatic biometric authentication systems are highly demanded for security. Therefore, the development of such systems of high performance is of great significance and huge potential applications. In this project, the selected biometrics will be researched in order to develop biometric authentication systems of high performance and explore other novel applications, e.g., the use of biometric information in multimedia information retrieval. The main issues to be studied include silent feature discovery/extraction, biometric user modelling, decision-making strategies and multi-modal biometric information fusion. In addition, there are numerous engineering issues, e.g., trade-off between performance and acceptability and robustness on miscellaneous mismatch conditions, to be investigated. Component-based Software Development. In Software Engineering, component-based development...

Her mother, Frances Nightingale, hailed from a family of merchants and took pride in socializing with people of prominent social standing. Despite her mother's interest in social climbing, Florence herself was reportedly awkward in social situations. She preferred to avoid being the center of attention whenever possible. Strong-willed, Florence often butted heads with her mother, whom she viewed as overly controlling. Still, like many daughters, she was eager to please her mother. Summer, the best season of them all. I am that kind of person there have a plan for my summer vacation. I am looking forward to summer in months, and I always have an idea of what a fantastic summer it is going to be. There are many reasons to why I think summer is the best, I mean, with winter, spring, and the fall. They are all great seasons too, but summer blows them all out of the way. The days are getting longer and the nights getting shorter. School is over, so you have the freedom and time, to do anything you want. No more nerve-wrecking testes, homework, or projects. My Project About Sociology

...folkway-a rule that covers customary ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving but lack moral overtones. This norm acts as a mechanism of social control because wearing these types of clothes to a school environment show solidarity and maybe somewhat threatens people. Solidarity because you do not fully see the face of the person (hidden) and threatening because you do not know what the person is thinking and the appearance also helps in that. I will be going to specific classrooms of the day and just try to blend in with the crowd and see how people will react. Perhaps the reactions will range from people whispering about how I look to the worst being the teacher will kick me out of class or tell me to go to the principal’s office because of my appearance. I predict that the major reaction I will be getting is someone making fun of me, which will lead to the teacher kicking me out of class. The norm will be taking place at school, which will take place in Choir class with Mr. White and Digital Journalism class with Mr. Bondurant. In Choir class, there will be different types of people observing me. The age range will be from 14 to 17 years old, all from different upbringings and cultures. In Digital Journalism, we will have a small class of 12, most know me but they will not know why I’m doing that. The youngest being 16 and the oldest being 17 in the class. As I entered Choir, I already felt the stares and whispers of the younger girls. When the older people of the......

Lead with Respect

...Lead with respect, not with power. Throughout my Global Lead experience, I learned a lot about what a global citizen is and how to become a better one. I also learned a lot about myself and who I am as a person and leader and also how I lead my life. I believe a global citizen is one who is aware of what is happening around the world; one who genuinely cares and is curious, and one who has the desire to help in any way possible. When I first arrived in Greece and we talked about being a mindful traveler, I realized that I had never even thought about that. I realized that even when people visit America, I am not mindful of their culture. My Global Lead experience really made me realize that I never really took the time to learn other cultures and what was happening outside the United States. The only things I really ever knew about other countries were the things that affected America. I wasn’t even aware that I was not being a global citizen. Being a global citizen means to be aware of things going on outside your country and to try and help in any way possible, even if it is something simple like supporting another countries product. The Greece culture is so beautiful and full of history. The people are so nice and courteous to visitors, especially us when we visited. Almost everyone there knew English, which really surprised me because I am not fluent in any other languages. The fact that pretty much everyone spoke our language showed me a good example of global......

...infrastructure. In this nine year period, DC water failed to demonstrate and provide site specific performance information on the Potomac and Rock Creek illustrating that GI can achieve equal or greater reductions of combined sewer overflows (“CSOs”) compared to building tunnels. Therefore utilizing $30 million dollars of the rate‐payers money to reduce the size of the Potomac’s tunnel and replace it with GI is a poor choice since DC Water has not proved its proposed GI would fulfil the same requirement as a large tunnel would. DC Water’s General Manager, George Hawkins’ power point presentation indicates DC Water has invested 10 million in GI projects such as tree plantings, rain gardens, green roofs, bioretention, etc., but the presentation lacks providing any significant data or measuring tool on how successful the projects have been while implementing GI. The second reason DC water should not use GI, is the concern whether DC Water intends on using public or private land to implement GI along Rock Creek and the Potomac. DC water has not addressed issues such as easements associated with GI on property as well as maintaining the green infrastructure it will install on the land. DC Water has not discussed who will bear the burden of maintaining the GI and whether GI occurs on private...

Flextronics: Deciding on a Shop-Floor System for Producing the Microsoft X-Box - Case Analysis

...1. 5 factors that make the decision difficult for McCusker: - Aggravation of both teams: If he decides to use either Datasweep or Virtual Factory, the other team may feel “lost”, which subsequently affect the harmony between two teams. - Time pressure of the project: There is not enough time for further analysis on the systems. - Unusual importance of the project: This is Flextronics’ first global project and its success or failure can affect the company’s reputation and ability to bid for future projects. It is closely observed by internal and external parties. In additional, the relationship with Microsoft is particularly important to Flextronics. - Pros and Cons of the choices: there is no single alternative that can solve all the problems. - Overstated infrastructure: during the bid process, Flextronics made Microsoft thought that a single system had existed in both facilities and raised it expectations very high while in fact the system was not already in place. 2. The criteria that McCusker should consider in his decisions: - Client’s satisfaction: This includes three sub-criteria: meet Microsoft’s tracking system requirements, deliver products on time and ensure product quality. - Employees’ satisfaction: Regardless which decision he make, McCusker have to ensure that employees at both factories are convinced with his decision and coordinate well with each other. - Cost-saving: The purpose of implementing the process at two different factories in two......

Tim and Funding

...Few memories as a failure on a major project from half a decade ago still vividly remains in memories. As a Research Assistant to Tim, it was my first paid job. Tim, an Engineer, worked in silos and had driver social style to his heart beat. He only communicated the expectations without delving in the details that he had in his mind. Even though the Office space was a closed knit space for 16 students, Tim seldom hung out with people to build personal relationships. He only interacted with others when there was a need. His lack of explanation on why the project was needed had left me wondering regarding purpose and design aspects of the new programming project. I struggled on how to effectively design the project and often sought help from other people, who recommended me that the project needed investment in new programming platform as old platform was incapable of achieving the project objectives. After making almost no progress on the project and wasting time in attempts to make old platform workable, I received a vehement email from Tim, stating that XYZ Inc. was deciding to scale back on funding, as no progress reports were submitted. I was shocked to learn that I was even expected to submit progress reports at the end of quarter on the undertaken project in which I had neither any clue nor communication. As an amiable person, I was too quick to reach an agreement with Tim on project deliverables. I had thought that I would be receiving friendly advice and guidance......
