Prior to starting the quality and culture quiz I knew that I lacked some knowledge about many of the different cultures. My results showed that I was fairly competent in addressing certain needs of my patient, but other areas required some improvement. There are two areas specifically that I will be focusing on that need improving upon according to this quiz. The first one involves non-verbal communication in a patient care setting. The second is becoming well-informed on minorities and immigrant patients and their cultural health beliefs and practices. By being better aware of different cultures I will be able to give competent quality care, fulfilling the healthcare needs of my patients.

Hero as a Reflection

...The Hero as a Reflection of Culture Belen Lowrey Abstract: In works of literature, a hero is a man to be admired and emulated. For this reason, the hero always demonstrates the embodiment of the ideals of the creating culture. Historical events and social conditions of different cultures cause different attributes to become valued in leaders. These cultural values are reflected in both the actions of a hero and in the heroic motivations. This paper focuses on the heroes of the Iliad, the Aeneid, Beowulf, and The Song of Roland and examines how historical events and cultural circumstances shaped the portrayal of the heroes in these works. Sabiduria, vol.1,1 Hero as a Reflection of Culture 1 Every culture has heroes. In works of literature, is an individual to be admired and emulated, and because of this he is the embodiment of the greatest virtues of the culture that created him. The ideals of every culture were shaped by the social conditions of the time and therefore different attributes became valued. To different degrees, the hero in a work is a result of not only the culture from which the hero comes, but also the culture of the author. Cultural values are reflected in both the actions of a hero and his motivations. As heroes, Achilles, Aeneas, Beowulf, and Roland reflect the values of the societies that created them. One of the oldest works of ancient literature is Homer‟s Iliad. Homer‟s works are dated to between 900 and 750 B.C. (Krieger,...

Professional Response: Culture & Society

...Response: Culture & Society Concordia University-Portland Abstract The present paper provides a personal and well-reasoned reflection concerning the role of family, circles of trust and culture in my vocational life. It will also focus on how my ethical orientation is linked: 1) to my communal and cultural background, and, 2) how I think it is expanded by cross-cultural awareness. Societies vary in the amount they empower distinction and uniqueness versus congruity and reliance. Individualistic societies encourage confidence, choice making taking into account of individual needs, and the privilege to a private life. In collectivist societies, total dedication is relied upon in one's prompt and more distant family/tribe. The term woman's rights are regularly used to depict the prevailing social example where choice making techniques, stress the needs of the family/gather initially, and the idea of having a "private life" may not even exist. Since societies adjust and change, making suppositions about family progress is risky; families in the United States today from all societies show a mixed bag of arrangements. Apparently, there is no such thing as a "normal" family. One can nonetheless expect that families from more customary societies not acculturated in United States ways, will have a tendency to esteem, women's liberation and show family structures that are truly unique in relation to the white collar class European American family demonstrate Keywords: culture, ethics...

Vulnerable People in the Workplace

...Nursing, nurses need to be aware of various cultures and how to use this knowledge in their daily practice (Maier-Lorentz, 2008). Leininger’s Cultural Care Theory addresses the need for cultural competency in health care. Communication with a patient can be affected by a patient’s culture. In addition, nurses need to avoid ethnocentric bias. In an effort to achieve a holistic approach to health care one must have an understanding of cultural factors that may affect proposed health care interventions. Leininger’s Cultural Care Theory can be hardwired with Watson’s Theory of Human Care to help achieve holistic care of the patient (Leininger & McFarland, 2002). In this paper I will discuss the design of a teaching program at my workplace to help raise awareness about vulnerable populations. According to De Chesney and Anderson (2008), issues with vulnerability can apply to population groups or individual people. De Chesney and Anderson (2008) discuss vulnerable populations that are at higher risk for health issues related to socioeconomic status, cultural issues, or environmental issues (De Chesney & Anderson, 2008). In the development of this project, I considered focusing on the Hispanic population. However, after research on vulnerable populations the project was focused to be broader and encompass other populations in an effort to help caregivers understand the need to hardwire cultural competence with holistic patient care. My workplace is focused on...

...and outcomes for effective school leaders. These standards were developed in order to enhance the quality of education. Just as the No Child Left Behind Act (2001) was created to promote educational excellence for all students and teacher accountability, the ISLLC Standards were implemented so that all school leaders were held accountable towards the success of all students and stakeholders. The ISLLC standards are essential towards the development of an effective school leader. Effective leadership begins with knowledge of the educational environment: the needs of individual students, strengths and weaknesses of faculty and staff members, knowledgeable in all aspects of instructional programs, student data, and scheduling. Becoming experts in the aforementioned areas allows for school leaders to develop a solid foundation for effective school leadership. The Collaborative Learning Community (Unwrapping the Standards) that took place over the last 8 weeks gave me an opportunity to understand the importance of the ISLLC standards and its functions; the purpose of each standard are essential to educating future administrators and assists them in becoming effective leaders. It gave me an opportunity to view my administrator and stakeholders in a different light and gave me an opportunity to learn from their strengths and weaknesses. Although I noticed many assets within my school’s administration, there were also a number of drawbacks that...

...Student’s Name Instructor’s Name Course Date Reflection Portfolio on Personal Values and NSW Health Values Introduction Values are important in any organization. Values give an organization credibility in the eyes of its clients. Promotion of ethical values is a role of every stakeholder of the organization. At New South Wales (NSW) Health and private employers ensure promotion of value through adherence to their value statements. This reflection portfolio evaluates the said values assuming that one works within that organization. In order to perform this reflection, one has to make sure that personal values are not compromised by the employer. Compromise may hinder independent comparison of one’s personal values and those of NSW Health. This work will analyze the influence of these values on health teams and demonstrate how NSW Health leaders may use these values to impact effectively on patient’s healthcare. An independent evaluator needs to follow the criteria that ensure professional practice. I adopted my values in a collage characterized by strong family bondage and commitment, sharing, love, happiness and family pets.
