Out of the dust by Karen Hesse

Out of the dust by Karen Hesse is a poetry/historical fiction novel published in the year 1997. This book won a series of awards such as the Newberry Medal and the Scott O’Dell Award. I liked this book because the book kept me wanting to read it. Billie Jo Kelby, a fourteen year old girl living in Cimarron county Oklahoma is a long legged redhead girl who resembles her dad. Because her dad expected a boy, Billie Jo and her dad’s relationship has been strained. Ma taught Billie Jo how to play the piano when she was young. Since then, it had become a passion for her. Things are now about to change since Ma discovered she was about to have a baby. Just when things are opening up for Billie Jo’s music career, a tragedy occurs in the kitchen while making breakfast. Her mother mistakes a pail of kerosene for water and pours it on the stove releasing flames. Ma immediately runs out of the kitchen and outside. Not knowing that ma would come back, Billie Jo hurls the flaming pail of kerosene outside at the moment Ma returns, catching her on fire. Billie Jo attempts to smoother out the flames, burning her hands in the process. Several days later, Ma dies giving birth to a boy who Pa names Franklin. I find this book very intriguing and emotional. I would recommend this book to people who love poetry and want to learn about the history during the great depression.

My Story(an Application Letter)

...create a working object. As I progressed in my school life, my interest in applying this in real life increased. It always fascinated me how even the lack of the smallest organism could tamper the ecosystem just like a spring toy that does not work properly if the spring is slightly bent. After Grade 10, I took up pure sciences- Biology, Physics and Chemistry as well as Mathematics and English. My passion for biology was keenly supported by all my chosen subjects. Chemistry helped me understand the molecular structures while Physics and Mathematics helped me understand the dynamics and statistics that we were provided with. Being an avid reader, has led to the formation of many ideas which I feel can be expressed on gaining more insight. A degree in Biological Sciences will help me reach my dream. Earlier this year, three of my friends and I participated in NTU Science Symposium. We had to write a research paper in any field of science. The four of us love biology and felt that we would be able to express our skills and knowledge through the paper and came up with the topic 'External Factors Affecting Bacterial Growth'. The research paper certainly tested our abilities to work as a team. We had to submit the paper in May and all of us had many other commitments apart from the research paper. Like every group has someone to keep all the interpersonal relations intact, this task was an added responsibility to me. The research paper helped us understand as well as apply many of...

Many Many Sops

...collection of lots of sops of lots of seniors. Browse. According to whacko. (Addressed to our batch) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As for SOPs, don't worry too much. All of you have good writing skills. Anyway, my advice on this matter is: [1] Have a look at some SOPs *now* or early next SEM. [2] When it's time to write your own SOP, do it *fully* by yourself. Do not look at anybody else's SOP. [3] Having made version 1.0 of your SOP, *now* take a look at as many SOPs as you can of guys in your area. Borrow points from then which you think are good. [4] Your SOP does not have to be too big. We at IITB tend to write long SOPs (1.5 to 2 pages) whereas IITM guys (who get better schools!)Usually write 0.75 page (max. 1 page). Basically, their SOPs are much more direct and to-the-point than ours. [5] REMEMBER THAT A SOP *MUST* BE ORIGINAL. Statement of Purpose I am applying to Stanford University for admission to the Ph.D. program in Computer Science. I am interested in Theoretical Computer Science, particularly in the Design and Analysis of Approximation Algorithms, Combinatory and Complexity Theory. My interest in Mathematics goes back to the time I was at school. This interest has only grown through my years in school and high school, as I have learnt more and more about the subject. Having represented India at the International Mathematical Olympiads on two occasions, I have been exposed to elements of Discrete Mathematics, particularly...

In the 1970s, Bruno Latour (a French anthropologist and social scientist) and Steve Woolgar (a British sociologist) undertook ethnographic field work at the Salk Institute in California. This research was inspired by grounded theory and Latour and Woolgar approached their study of work in the endocrinology laboratory as if they were anthropologists observing a hitherto unknown and strange set of practices. In other words, they did not fit their observations into any preconceived notions of scientific method, or how science 'should' be done. The resulting, highly influential book Laboratory Life: The Social Construction of Scientific Facts(1979, re-released...

...discussing the diversity of faith expressions and belief systems of patients as a health care provider. For this assignment, I decided to research Christianity and one other diverse faith group; interviewing said friend about her faith, Naturalism. In the health care industry, health care providers whose spiritual beliefs differ from their own personal beliefs are a common issue. Learning how to appropriately and respectfully handle each individual’s diversity and faith or belief system is of the upmost importance within the health care industry. Interview Assessment Analysis When conducting my interview with my close friend, Asyia Aanandi, asking a wide range of questions on her faith was required for further assessment; furthermore, the best way to incorporate Asyia’s beliefs of a Naturalist toward her philosophy of providing care from the perspective of her faith. Asyia Aanandi’sAanandi spiritual beliefs are that of a Naturalist, believing in only one single notion; Homo-sapiens feel, think, and act on, due to “chemical reactions” inside ones brain and body. Naturalism is the belief that as humans, acting on ones desires is not only validated, but acceptable; to live the way one was created to be. All phenomenon’sphenomenons are explained through science, voiding out the very existence of everything supernatural. Beginning with my interview with Asyia, I started with the most important question, “Do you believe in continued health if you happen to fall unresponsive...

Dr. Hawley Almstedt’s Advanced Nutrition

...Reflective Essay The project I am submitting to the Hannon Library Undergraduate Research award was originally an assignment in Dr. Hawley Almstedt’s Advanced Nutrition course. Students were asked to compose a paper on any topic of their choice relevant to the field of nutrition using research from at least ten sources, half of which were required to be from peer-reviewed journals. I was first inspired to write my paper on amylin after hearing about the hormone and its exciting potential in a newspaper article. I already had an interest in endocrinology because of other classes, so this was intriguing to me. I didn’t know much about amylin so I had to do preliminary research to see if amylin was a viable subject for a semester-long research paper. I discovered a plethora of material in every science, health and biochemical chemical journal imaginable. In short, plenty of material was available. To fit criteria of the class assignment, I had to alter my thesis to better address how amylin affects nutrition and its importance to those who study and work in the field. The primary tool for my research was Hannon Library’s online databases. I found that the Medline and Pubmed databases returned the most and best quality results. Sometimes, I would search one of these databases and a PDF version was available for free directly from the database. However, in many instances only the abstract was available on Pubmed. On these occasions I employed one of Hannon’s...

...Thomas 0. Schlesinger Walking out of Rounds Hall with me after class, Benny, a sophomore in one of my international relations courses, asked for, and received, some pointers on the required paper. “You’ve just told me to write exactly as I’ve been taught not to write,” said he. “And who, pray tell, taught you?” asked I. He gave an over-the-shouldernod across the street, toward Ellen Reed House--the English Department. "Hmmm. . . fine--I'mnot surprised to hear they tell you something different,” I told him. “The English profs teach you to write in a generic way, say, fiction, or generically expository stuff. I want you to write a social science paper.” With some ”Hmmm-ing” of his own, Benny shuffled off, wearing a mildly annoyed and not altogether convinced frown. How dare they teach different ways to write in different departments at the same college! Benny did make an effort to heed my suggestions, but it took persistence. For example, the introduction to his first draft, included a vague Writing Across the Curriculum, Vol. 11, August 1990 35 36 Writing Across The Curriculum (August 1990) statement like: ”Conflict between Arabs and Black Africans in the Sudan is a serious problem and should be examined in greater detail. . . including its history, causes, and future.” The purpose statement I eventually settled for read more like this: ”This paper will examine social, economic, and political aspects of the Sudanese civil war. ...cease to grow”. I am a strong believer of this quote. Right from my childhood, I was curious about the sciences. Starting from a ‘switch’ to a complex equation everything used to intrigue me. I am intending to take up a career where I can quest for knowledge as a researcher, who can feel the things with his own eyes and own heart, rather than a being a mere professional. In each and every circumstance, I was successful in making my dreams come true and live in them. I am eager to find myself in the same circumstance again by achieving what is called as the most highly appraised dream of mine. This can be reached by Pursuing Masters Degree at your esteemed university. It will not only help me to accomplish my goal, but also augments my knowledge regarding the different aspects of the subject. The school I studied in, Nirmala high school, focused on an all-round education, with strong basics, especially the practical knowledge. That curiosity and passion drove me to choose Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as my subjects in Intermediate. Analysis of Market Competition

...ANALYSIS OF MARKET COMPETITION, SWITCHING COSTS AND ITS CONSEQUENCES IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS IN NEPAL NAME: SAROJ POUDEL DEGREE: MASTER OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS/MASTER OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY COURSE: 7112ICT RESEARCH METHODS IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INTRODUCTION The economics of switching costs and network effects have achieved a significant amount of popular, as well as professional attention in the last few decades. It is presently defined as the core factor for new Information Technology economy. Switching costs originates, if a consumer demands a product, or its related accessories(hardware or software), of his own purchases to be compatible with each other this creates economies of scope among his purchases from a single supplier. Whereas network effects arise when a user wants his system to be compatible so that s/he can interact or trade with other users, or switch to the same compatible system, which leads to the creation of economies of scope between different incompatible products. Thus these economies of scope impacts the consumer’s buying and switching behavior between various products. The state of lock-in arises when the switching cost is sufficiently high so that the consumer proceeds using the same product rather than switching to the different product. Lock in is the state where the cost of switching exceeds the benefits of switching. Economics of switching costs is the summation of various types of switching costs including: compatibility...

Personal Goals

...achieve are, first is to complete my bachelor of science in business management in 2 years. Next is to become a better writer. Throughout junior college, writing has always been my weakest point and with the amount of writing assignments required at University of Phoenix this needs to be one of my top goals. Finally is to complete every course with no less than a B letter grade. With making the decision to return to school and taking on the considerable financial burden, receiving an average grade would be unacceptable to my standards.      While being employed full-time, The University of Phoenix has the rare opportunity for working professionals to finish courses in just 5 weeks. Having such a compressed time schedule for completing degrees will make it possible to complete my bachelor of science in business management in 2 years as long as I do not deviate from the program. I have decided that my number one priority in life is to complete my degree. I do not have other major commitments outside of work that will distract me from my assignments so staying focused on school will be realistic. Though I cannot predict the future, I do not plan on taking any time off during the two years that would result in interrupting my class schedule. With the option of taking CLEP test this will allow me to “test out” of some of the lower-division courses such as communication arts and humanities. Although this will require additional studying outside of my upper-division courses the CLEP test...
