Olatoye, R. A. - Institute of Education, Olabisi Onabanjo University,
Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Nigeria E-mail: kingdemola@yahoo.com Abstract This study compared study habit, self-concept and science achievement of students in public and private junior secondary schools in Ogun State, Nigeria. Twelve secondary schools were randomly selected from Egba and Ijebu divisions of the state. A sample of three hundred and sixty (360) students participated in the study. Three research instruments were used to collect data. There was no significant difference in study habit and selfconcept of students in public and private schools. However, private school students performed significantly better than their public school counterparts in integrated science (t = 3.400, p<0.05). In both public and private schools student study habit and self-concept combined together and singularly predicted science achievement. Counsellors should encourage students to study and also train them on how to improve their self-concept in order to improve science achievement. Key Words: Study habit, self-concept, science achievement, public and private schools, junior secondary schools. ...Thesis Statements Sunderman/English 1A Adapted from http://www.dartmouth.edu/~writing/resources/students/ac_paper/develop.html Why Is a Thesis Statement So Important? Good question. As we’ve stated in class, our goal as writers is to give information to our readers that is interesting and easily understood. The thesis statement is typically that one sentence that asserts the main point, and controls and structures the essay. Without a strong, thoughtful thesis, your paper might seem unfocused, weak, and not worth the reader’s time. How Do I Write a Good Thesis Statement? A good thesis statement will have the following characteristics: 1. A good thesis statement will make a claim. You need to develop an interesting perspective on a topic that you can support and defend. This perspective must be more than an observation. “America is violent” is an observation. “Americans are violent because they are fearful” posits an interesting perspective on violence in America. It gives a possible reason WHY America is violent—a reason that can be supported and defended with specific examples. You want to make sure that your claim is not too broad, and that you can successfully defend and support it in the required number of pages. “Disease has shaped human history” is an impossibly large thesis. It would be better narrowed down to a specific disease, a specific time period, and a specific way (or ways) that disease has shaped human history. “In the mid-1980s,......

Research Propropsal

...| My Research Proposal | English 215 with Dorothy Hoerr | | Shaquinta Ford | 10/21/2013 | | For my persuasive paper due in English class, we were given a list of topics, to choose one to write about. The topic I choose was should laws governing nursing homes be changed? Working in a nursing home for the past three years, has influenced my thinking about them. As a result, from working in a health care facility, I’ve learned that the staff is unheard. Majority of Nursing Home Administrators don’t consider their staff’s ideas to improve their facility. Another reason I choose this topic is because many people forget that even though someone is in a nursing care facility, that doesn’t mean overlooking them. They still have a voice that should be heard and an opinion that should be considered. The quality of life through nursing homes should be improved by helping to turn a “disabled” into a “capability”. One of the things I will include in my paper will be some of the laws of nursing homes. In this paper, I will explain the meaning of my thesis. I intend to focus on one of the major goals of any nursing care facility, which is to rehabilite. In this paper I intend to show how this goal is sometimes not achieved, and ways it can be achieved. I also intend to write about several problems nursing homes face and ways to help solve them. The audience I will be writing for will be a mixed audience. Half of the audience will be people that already know......
