When you wake in the morning, you could smell fresh sea salt, the stinge of rottin animals that were dumped on the seawalls and the stench of exhaust fumes from the vehicles on the high way. On the outskirts of a small metropolis and on the costal belt, a semi suburban Village called KITTY can be found. A part of the city of Georgetown. Kitty is known for its numerous Chinese restaurants, night clubs, a market and swinging night life. The Village is a hotspot was a hotspot for the young and idle, sitting on street corners until the wee hours of the morning is a norm. The Village is made up of ten streets running east to west and three running north to South. On many of these street corners, venders can be found selling from fruits, snacks, bread or cigarette. Whenever mum needed groceries we rarely went to the supermarket, we would climb onto our bicycles, and off we went, destined for the Kitty market. The market was located on the main road, it’s name Alexander Street. Alexander street ran from north to south, from the seawall to the Police Station and is about 0.75 of a mile long. All the action happens on Alexander Street, not in any of the access roads or the ally ways, but on Alexander Street. In the afternoon, after schools are out school children would line the pavements, although they were no schools on Alexander Street, kids from the neighboring school districts like Thomas lands or Campbellville would walk over to kitty, which wasn’t too far. They would stand on Alexander Street and wait on the more entertaining mini busses, to take them to their destinations. After four (4pm) the streets would be almost life less, the kids were either home or at after school classes. At about five (5pm) the streets were alive again, with the kid’s from after school lessons were out on the corner waiting for buses and the kids that lived in kitty had started to roam the streets. When darkness fell, kitty took on a whole new crowd, the young adults who had nothing better to do with there time, society’s lowlifes, and young men mostly who had just returned from work, took to the streets.and they were the ones who were on the corner till midnight or even later. Kitty was a great place to live, but like any other place, there are times when they were surprises. The one I will always remember one evening, in the summer of 2005 kitty went into total darkness, blackout as it was well known as. During this time people are hardly ever on the streets. Our generator was low on fuel, so my sister and I decided to take the flash light and head for the Gastation to get some fuel. The streets were blanketed with darkness and there was no one to be seen, just a few police vehicles. We were on our way back home, when all of a sudden we heard it, gun shots, and rapid gun shots. My sister and I stood there in total shock, “what on earth is going on?” And then, within the blink of an eye, the streets were crowded, people came sprinting from all directions. Some were even in their night gowns. Everyone was just standing there, whispering to themselves. And the loud sirens and flashing lights of more police vans can be seen and heard from a distant. Still not knowing what had happened and being scared to death my sister and I held hands and ran until to our home. The generator was still running and that’s when we saw it. On the news flash on N.C.N. one of the guys who had broken free from prison a few months ago was shot in a house just around the corner by the police. After learning what had happened, my sister and I learned a valuable lesson. Not to go out in the village at any power outage (blackout).

Which Is Better, a Small Town or Big City?

...raveling has a way of giving you perspective. For the past several summers my family and I have traveled around the country, covering as much as 9,000 miles by car in one five-week summer trip. The trips are exciting and fun, great education for my kids, and make us all realize how different our lives are from lots of other people. Our destination is always a big city, like Boston or New York or Washington. I spent my first 29 years living in Boston, so I enjoy visiting my old South Boston neighborhood, riding the subway system I dreaded as a schoolkid, and taking in the museums and historical sites and entertainment I enjoyed so much when I lived there. We stop in lots of small towns on the way to and from the city. Many are similar to our own Gold Beach, Oregon, a quiet, friendly town of 1,500 nestled in a fairly large expanse of open space, in our case the ocean and mountains of the Northwest. I always gain insight into myself and my situation in life when I travel. Typically I feel fortunate to have made the transition from city to country life long ago because I feel at home and comfortable in the country. But the city is still exciting and impressive. Here are what I see as the major benefits and drawbacks between city and small town life: Population density: Even as you approach the city on its main freeway or expressway, cars begin crowding closer together and dart in and out of lanes in an effort to get one or two car lengths ahead of a competitor. In the...

...A Tribute to My Town When I remember the days  that saw my early childhood  spent on the green shores  of a murmurous lagoon;  when I remember the coolness,  delicious and refreshing,  that on my face I felt  as I heard Favonius croon;  when I behold the white lily  swell to the wind’s impulsion,  and that tempestuous element  meekly asleep on the sand;  when I inhale the dear  intoxicating essence  the flowers exude when dawn  is smiling on the land;  sadly, sadly I recall  your visage, precious childhood,  which an affectionate mother  made beautiful and bright;  I recall a simple town,  my comfort, joy and cradle,  beside a balmy lake,  the seat of my delight.  Ah, yes, my awkward foot  explored your sombre woodlands,  and on the banks of your rivers  in frolic I took part.  I prayed in your rustic temple,  a child, with a child’s devotion;  and your unsullied breeze  exhilarated my heart.  The Creator I saw in the grandeur  of your age-old forests;  upon your bosom, sorrows  were ever unknown to me;  while at your azure skies  I gazed, neither love nor tenderness  failed me, for in nature  lay my felicity.  Tender childhood, beautiful town,  rich fountain of rejoicing  and of harmonious music  that drove away all pain:  return to this heart of mine,  return my gracious hours,  return as the birds return  when flowers spring again!  But O goodbye! May the Spirit  of Good, a loving gift-giver,  keep watch eternally...

Two Descriptions

...I sit on the old courthouse steps in the town square of Denton in the great state of Texas. The square is filled with people from all walks of life. Nestled between two universities and surrounded by residential neighborhoods, this place is constantly alive with people coming and going. I find myself humming along to the sounds of music coming from a group of young college kids who have set up their instruments and are performing on the courthouse lawn for all to enjoy. A gentle breeze picks up and with it is carried a glorious scent of bbq wafting over from one of the local restaurants. This place plays host to many festivals throughout the year. From where I am seated I can see the strings of white LED lights strung throughout the trees on the courthouse lawn. In the evening these lights are turned on creating a lovely ambiance. This is the type of place where the waitress at the diner knows your name and order as soon as you walk in the door. This is that small town America that for so many years I looked for and finally have found. I sit on the steps of the old courthouse here in Denton, Texas. The courthouse square is packed with all sorts of people. Many have walked here from a few blocks away due to the limited parking options. Just a few feet from me, an amateur band of college kids have set up and are using the courthouse lawn as an open air practice studio. Walking about the square, darting in and out of the waves of people, I duck into a diner. The waitress...

...out into every area. Buses only run every hour to half hour during weekdays. It is even worse when they come every other hour on the half-hour on weekends. There appears to be no rhyme or reason to the hours and minutes scheduled. If you miss the bus, then good luck to you, you will have to wait another hour until the next one. At times, even when you are ready and waiting the only bus zooms right by you. If you are not lucky enough to live in a major city in CT, then the bus that goes out to your town or small city stops running in the evening by 6 PM. It is the most inconvenient time ever. If you miss that bus, then you are forced to hitch a ride or catch a taxi. And who can afford a taxi every day? Not knowing where the bus stops are plays a huge role in missing the bus. The bus stops have bus stop signs only in the cities. If you live outside one of these areas then you must guess where the buses might stop. And, considering that CT is mostly made up of small towns and villages, this is no small thing. There are alien symbols, i.e. poles or trees with a white paint stipe around them. One is supposed to surmise that this fading, poorly exhibited, painting is a bus stop. Now, if you are just moving into the area, how would one know that is a symbol for a bus stop? I did not find out that it was a mark for a bus stop until I looked in the corner of a bus schedule, where it tells you that that means it is a bus stop. Now I do not know if said stripes are incident to...

Why Might the Supernatural Be Part of Everyday Life? Why Did the Church Encourage These Views?

...monasteries and convents. Churches were present in small towns and villages so it became a center point of everyone’s lives. By being in such close range to everyone and providing all these facilities to them, the church kept great control. Part of the reason the church maintained such good control is through fear. The fear of the less educated people in the town kept the church popular and very wealthy. The church encouraged any fear or gossip throughout the towns of the supernatural. The Supernatural was part of everyday life during the Tudor period, as the church had a major role in people’s lives and they would let rumours and gossip circulate in the towns as a method of control. Supernatural happenings were very common in this time because they claimed finding lost possessions, recovery from sickness and resumption of egg-laying from hens to be a saintly intervention. These were all proclaimed as miracles and this was a very regular occurrence. The church let these rumours and gossip stay in circulation because it mixed ‘supernatural happenings’ and religious beliefs together. This kept everyone under control, the church rich whilst still confirming people’s belief of what the church taught. Delving further into my last point, the less educated people and normal townspeople could not distinguish very well between religious rituals/beliefs and supernatural/superstition because of gossip and fear throughout the town. The church kept a well-maintained authority all over England...

...The city where I live When you say “ my native town” you think of a place in our planet which is either connected with your birth or a memorable event on your childhood. You usually remember your friends or your first love. But I think that a city can be truly consider yours, if it has left a long-lasting impression your soul. Every tiny part of your heart is connected with your town and you do not regret that there has remained an important part of your soul. Many people spend their entire life in the same place, go along the same streets, see familiar buildings, city views, communicate with the same people without thinking how strongly accustomed they have become to their city, how close they are. Cities can trace the fate of its people, silently observe and keep in the memory different events. I believe that every city is a living system, a complete organism in which various processes occur and above all the citizens are an integral part of this complex system. Each city like a person has its own history, its own individual character, its foundation and traditions. There are cities where people can carry out their dreams and aspirations. People aspire to these cities, hoping to find themselves to determine their appointment and change lives for the better. It often happens that the city welcomes guests who soon become relatives. But sometimes it happens quite differently, a city, especially a large one doesn’t accept strangers doesn’t give a chance and an opportunity...

...Oliver Planty Midterm Project BSAD 340 1/4/14 Over last summer we had to put an all new sewer system in the campsite I work at. It is a home town family owned and run campsite. The campsite is only open 3 months out of the year and it’s located on Tupper Lake. I’ve been working there for 9 years and it’s like my second home. We had no problem installing the new system it was the fact that the old one had to be replaced. The campsite had a self-maintain system which was over 50 years old. The state inspector came and told my boss Frank the sewer system was out of date. So he began to look into new systems, and you wouldn’t believe the price to install one. So he called the village water and sewer boss Bob and talked to him about the sewer problem. Now a new problem arose the town wouldn’t let my boss hook the campsite sewer up to the village sewer. My boss had a big problem with this because the village only would have to extend the sewer line 100 feet for him to hook up to it. By allowing my boss to do this it would have saved him about 80,000 in installation fees. My Boss even had a meeting with the village board to resolve the issue, but still no luck. They keep telling him that he needed to install a self-maintain system because the campsite wasn’t technicality located in the village, even though the village line ran through the campsite. To install one of these systems would have run him about $100,000 for the 150 site campsite. This is a huge investment for a small...

Fable

...A little town was unusually noisy today. There came a fair. And since very morning everybody – children, adults and elderly people- gathered in the central square. Such a fuss! The fair was a very important occasion for people. They worked hard for the whole year and took a rest during those summer days. It was greatly celebrated. The square was decorated with flags, ribbons and flowers. Music was playing loudly. Children were laughing. And artists were performing and singing. All of those noises were combined in a melody of universal holiday. A little bird was singing with the melody. She liked fairs. She liked holidays. But in that town they were so infrequent! What a pity! -Mommy! – Asked the little bird her mother that was cleaning her feathers sitting under the roof beam, - Why people don’t like the fairs? Why they have fun so rarely? -Because, my little birdie, they should work hard to deserve this holiday. -I want more holidays, mommy! - Stubbornly twittered the little bird, - Where can be more holidays? -Well, I don’t know if it is true, but one day the Old Raven told us the story about the City. There are more people, so there should be more fairs, I guess…- the mother-bird murmured thoughtfully. -The City, - the little bird repeated it dreamily. It was the day when the little bird decided to go to the City. Next morning when the mother was asleep the little bird managed to leave their cozy nest and to start its long way to the City. The bird had been...

Rural Community Interview Paper

...A rural community is an area outside of the city and towns; they often have farmlands, plains, deserts, and prairies; there are a few buildings, businesses, and people living in rural communities (Tickamyer & Duncan, 1990). In 2000, the United States census showed that 59 million people lived in rural communities (Scales,2014, p.). I had a chance to interview three individuals who are from a rural area in Alabama; Tykeylia Crenshaw, Erica staley, and Curtis Irby they all faced difficulties with employment, education, and transportation in their rural community. In rural communities “Unemployment among rural African Americans is twice as high as for others groups in rural areas. African Americans often live in distinct communities with high...

New Urbanism

...(Kunstler). This can all be re-modified with how we mold our space with buildings in particular. Kunstler’s informative speech begs the question: how can we make places that are worth caring about again? The main problem with our society’s architecture is the degradation of the “public realm”. The public realm in the United States consists of two entities: its dwelling areas of civilization and our civic life (Kunstler). When the public realm is destroyed or tarnished, the well-being of public life is taken down with it. We no longer have the cathedral plazas or market squares of older cultures. Some of that has to do with the fact that our country was in constant expansion for quite a while when our nation was young and developing in my opinion. Our body of culture is argued to have stopped post World War II. Our society should be designed more with the purpose of defining where we are geographically and culturally. I agree that most of our country’s architecture lacks a core value depicting what is important in our lives or what we are proud of, defining us as people. Perhaps, however that is exactly what we are doing. Our country is so enthralled with the idea of industry and making money that we...

...reminded of a Norman Rockwell picture. The small-town atmosphere and caring people give it an old-fashioned quality that is not often duplicated. Surrounded by thick rugged firs and the chilled Atlantic Ocean, this habitat is home to as few as 500 year-round residents and summer guests. I have lived among this untamed coastal beauty all my life as have my mother and her mother as well. My grandmother spent her early years on an island in the mouth of the harbor. Her stories of these unique days are rich with tidal waters and family togetherness. The quaint size of my sea-side home gives its residents special qualities. People of Cutler have small-town values. They pull together in times of joy and need. Whenever my father needs help, more than enough hands always seem to appear and get the job done. These same hands are also there to give him a pat on the back or a round of applause. A certain uniqueness is applied to jobs of Cutler as well. Many of its residents reap their earnings by living and working off the land. Through the fog-filled summer mornings you can always see clammers scattered across the muddy flats. Faithful Cutler fishermen slip out of the harbor before the sun creeps over the horizon. My father is one of these men, a fisher of lobster as well as a boat builder in the winter months. I have worked with him on the boat since I was ten and have been able to drink up the beauty of the shore while strengthening my relationship with him. This summertime work...

Cities

...Name: Oladeji Oluwatomisin Student number: 999929323 Course code: GGR 207 Instructor: Dr. Jason Cooke September 29th 2014 Topic: What is a City? There are various ways to define a city either it be from a historical, contemporary, administrative or economic viewpoint. For the purpose of this analysis, a city is defined as a large permanent settlement, which is usually dense and highly populated relative to rural villages and towns, and they are made up of heterogeneous people. As recently as a hundred years ago, only 2 in 10 people lived in cities, but now we have 54% of the world population living in cities or urban areas. The history of cities date back to the time hunter-gatherers roamed the earth. After a few years, this led to semi permanent settlements, and with the invention of irrigation, this led to specialization of other areas and the development of cities as settlements became permanent. As more jobs and opportunities became available in cities, people from the villages moved to the cities, and this accounts for the dense characteristic of most cities. The first cities are thought to have started around 3500BC in lower Mesopotamia after the Neolithic revolution or the agricultural revolution, as agriculture is believed to be a pre requisite for city development. Urbanism can be described as the way cities grow or develop. There are various characteristics of a city; some include population size and density, social stratification, economic production...

The Blind Followers

...The Blind Followers In the short story "The Lottery", the author, Shirley Jackson takes the reader to a town where the lottery is not something anyone would want to win. Every 27th of June a small town gathers in their town square and pick pieces of paper, hoping not to get the one piece of paper with a black dot on it. The town has done this ceremony since the town was established. Most of the people have forgotten why they even do this ceremony. The twist with this lottery is that the winner gets stoned to death by the towns people in a sort of ceremonial way. Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" raises the issue of following traditions and ceremonies blindly without question. The characters in Jackson's short story are all following this tradition blindly and without question. All the characters form up that morning at the town square, just like Marines being called to formation at the beginning and at the end of the day. Without any hesitation or uncertainty they all come, husbands, wives, children, and the elderly, all show up as if they were all just going to see a show or ride rides at a carnival. Being a town of just over 300, most of the characters know each other and as they begin to arrive women start catching up on the local gossip and the men start to talk about harvest and things that men talk about. When the director of the ceremony arrives and starts to call out names, most of the people are eager in a way and as the names of the head of households are...

Personal Narrative: The City Of Oakdale

...I grew up in the central valley of California where the most reliable GPS, driving down Highway 108, was to follow the lingering perfume of methane until you hit the aromatic scent of chocolate radiating from the Hershey factory. As I am sure you can gather, the town of Oakdale was a very agriculture-based community with no more than twenty thousand people and wide open spaces. Everyone in my community knew their neighbors, law enforcement, and local business owners. Moreover, they were the same people that had been there since birth and they raised their progeny and watched their grandchildren grow into the young adults that added to the perpetual nature of its community. This meant, at its core, it was limited to its ideas, outside influence,...
