Most of the emails are to case workers and supervisors regarding our clients. Writing emails are the most opportunities that I get to write. Our clients are members with Medicaid. Because of the nature of my work, my emails have to be very professional. And on my job, unclear emails cause confusion and delays. A well-written email makes it easy for the recipient to understand and act on its message. I do not have a lot of experience as a writer. Writing is not something that I enjoy. I enjoy conversing more than writing. My concerns with writing are learning how to put my thoughts in writing. Proofreading is also something that I need to work as a writer. People who are good writers have fewer problems than those who have trouble writing out their thoughts. I believe those who have a great mind of imagination are some of the best writers. My experiences in writing have always been a minimal, because writing is a difficult process for me. By the time I reached grade school was the first time I wrote an essay. I have written other things such as poems and a couple of personal letters. Since then, it’s been difficult to write because I no longer have inspiration. I like to write but have little enjoyment doing so; I guess you can say I lost my muse. ...VMy Writing While Growing Up I grew up in a family of writers. My parents are both writers. My dad was an editor-in-chief at a major internet magazine while I was growing up. While I was a young child, both my parents owned and contributed to a programming magazine. I was always encouraged to write as a child. My parents would always help me edit and change my writings in school. Even my brother has always been a writer. He was always telling stories growing up. Literacy is the “ability to read and write”, but I believe that literacy is a way to grow, discover, and express oneself. My ideal vision of literacy instruction would be to allow students to use reading and writing as a gateway to self-expression. Literacy can be used to grow not only as a person, but as a well-developed writer. A constraint to my vision of literacy would be the restricting mindset instructors enforce on their students. Students have been expected to write solely based on the “rules” taught by their teachers throughout their education. If students do not comply with these “rules”, they are punished with a bad grade. I strongly believe that students write in fear of bad markings and in fear of not pleasing their instructors’ needs. As students advance through the education system, they must advance in their writing skills as well. University students should be able to read and write at a higher level. High school and college instructors must be open to reason and consider that being so demanding with their criteria will only cause students to write at basic level. Considering that I haven’t had to write an actual paper since grade school, writing is not a part of my everyday life. Being a professional cosmetologist I’m not given the opportunity to write while on the job. The most I write at work would be the clients name and there service requested. I don’t have to write notes there; all my focus is on hair. With the way technology is today, most of my “personal” writing is done through text. I wasn’t the type of person that kept a journal. I found myself being able to vent more when it’s just freelance. With the iPhone the note pad is my best friend. Not checking for spelling or grammatical error would be the type of writing that I’m used to. Making sure every T is crossed and every I is dotted is something that never crosses my mind while freelancing. Being a college student, I try to write as much as possible.
