...My name is Karina. I was born and raised in the beautiful country of Kazahstan, which is located in the Central Asia and was the part of the former Soviet Union. I finished High School there and attended four-year college for about two years. I was majoring in Customs Law, but I didn't finish it, because my mother won a lottery Green-card (permanent residence in USA) and we decided to move to America. I have only one older brother. His name is Ulan. Hi is 30 years old. We are very close to each other, although he is four years older than I am. Unfortunately, he is not here with us right know, because according to the US law, children over 21 years old are not eligible for the green- card, so he stayed in Kazahstan. My father died a year ago of stroke. He was just 54 years old. I still can not believe that he is gone. I still miss him and he will always be in my heart. I and my mother came to the United States four years ago. We live together in Brooklyn. She is very strong and good person. She is the one who influenced me to go to the college. English is not my first language, so I was afraid that I wouldn't do well at school. She kept saying to me that I'll do well and that she believes in me. And here I'm at the LaGuardia Community College today, majoring in Paralegal studies. This is my third semester here. Now I feel more confident about myself, because I passed all courses that I have been taking and received good grades and try to do my best to keep doing it. I'm a very...

Self Concept

...I’m finally free from such situation. I found it, thank God. Some people say that I’m one of an influential person because I look reliable and dependable. I must say, that kind of people look at me superficially, because the thing is that I am reliant and dependent. Not in a way that when I do this and that, I need someone to back me up. I am dependent about decisions, I don’t know how to answer yes and no, and what I always know is I don’t know. I’m uncertain of some things that I find myself useless when someone asks me something. When someone needs my help, sometimes I want to yell at him or her because most of the time, I also need a help and I just can’t call for one because they think I already can, that I am great enough. I have a problem in expressing my emotions. I once made a poem about this part of me entitled, The Mask. Obviously, there was an invisible mask on my face stopping me from looking sad, angry, happy, etc. I think the reason is that before, I used to look indifferent just to cover up my vulnerability, but was I wrong. It grew to become a talent. I thought I’d grow up looking strong and invincible because of this talent. It became a pain in the chest – becoming heavy and full of grudges and bitterness because I don’t express it. Some people think that I don’t take what they say to heart, but in reality, I hate them and stab them straight to their hearts mentally. I just want to yell at them to say that I can be hurt, I can be mad. My face just doesn’t show...

Me, I and Myself

...Me, I and myself I always ask myself: is it me, when I do something; could I do it better this time or did I do it for myself. I have time to think about these things while working. I work as a photographer and this job gives me a chance to express myself. It helps me even to understand some things better, because at first view I see things one’s way but after a while a see them completely different. The job gives me even the freedom to choose what to shoot and so the theme of my pictures often responds to my mood at that day. Or I can take pictures that will make me feel better than I do at that moment. Being a photographer is a job with so many various purposes – as many as the people are. Some photographers make only black and white pictures, other make colorful or extravagant or pictures that help in a science. The objective of the camera is like an eye of a man - everyone sees the world in a different way. But nobody can’t hide behind his work, even if he tries – it shows what we are. The most important thing for a picture to become a good one is to have its own feeling. When you a see a picture and it touches you, it rises in you some kind of feeling, that means that this capture was worth. Looking at some pictures make me think about many things and sometimes I can even change my point of view about something. While taking a picture I think about what’s my purpose for shooting exactly this or that. But after the picture is ready, it could...

Change

...‘Change’ story (Picture of clock) I think change really is impalpable. We all fear it. We regret not hindering change while the chance is there – and once we realise its poison to us, it’s too late to turn back. I think we habitually – yet completely subconsciously are ignorant to it, and one day we actually wake up only to find that things aren’t the same as yesterday, but different in ways we just can’t seem to grasp. Their velvet screams of laughter filled the somewhat tepid autumn afternoon- only just warm enough for a joyous mood stay. The plump apple trees swallowed the back fence and a shiny modernistic swing set hid in-between, happily making the back yard look like what I tried to create - a children’s nirvana. As the friendly, gleaming sun highlighted the sunburnt shoulders and grubby knees, it made one thing in particular very evident; the radiance of their smiles – brighter than the sun could even strive to shine… and right in that moment, the court cases and the distressing legal meetings all gushed away, in an instance so fast it made me blurry – not that the feeling stayed around for too long. The pleasant sound of their infantile pitter-pattering feet on the freshly laid gravel slowly morphed into the dreaded sound of a car pulling up – to my disgust and complete sorrow… their mother – and once my so called ‘life’ partner - was here to retrieve my only vanities much too soon. In that sickling moment that seemed to last forever, goodbyes were never so hard and...

...Styles After taking the LSI (Life Styles Inventory) survey, I noticed certain things about my personality and my thinking styles. Certain styles rated higher than others, but there were a few that stayed constant. The two longest style extensions have the greatest influence on my behavior, and are called your primary and backup styles. Going through these styles in particular, I noticed my primary style is approval and my backup style is conventional style. In the LSI index, “The Approval scale measures our need to be accepted by others to increase or sustain our feelings of self-worth. While the desire to be approved of is natural, problems occur when approval-seeking becomes a need, and ultimately our standard way of interacting with others.” This means I need people to approve my lifestyle. I try so hard for people to impress people with my personality and character, but sometimes it’s not enough. This style is categorized as having low self-esteem, an over concern with wanting to be liked as well as complications with conflict and confrontation. In this case, I am the type of person who tries very hard to be liked by others. Sometimes it can backfire because I show a persona of myself to people where I will act like someone I am not so that they accept me. In this world we live in, it’s a dog eat dog world where people don’t care about your feelings. They will do anything to get to the top of ladder. Personally, I am the type of person who truly feels better when someone approves...

Me Myself and I

...I have no single philosophy for life, but rather three philosophies. Each of which has different meaning. My three philosophies include the following: work hard, take pride in myself and the accomplishments that I make, and also everyone is on this planet for a reason. In the following paragraphs I will explain each of my three philosophies. From this, I hope that others will understand why I look at life the way that I do. The first of my three philosophies, to work hard, can be very easily explained. I feel that if money or a gift given to me by another person because I earned the reward is much more valued. In other words, knowing that I worked hard, did a good job, and deserve a reward makes me feel good inside. I also feel that all persons should have to work and support themselves. If a person doesn't wish to put forth any effort and work hard to support themselves, then that person deserves nothing. The next of my three philosophies is to take pride in myself and the accomplishments that I make. I have found that if I don't take pride in myself and what I do than I might as well give up on life. My reason for this being that no one else will think highly of me if I, myself, don't. I always set goals for myself before I begin a project or take part in an activity. My rule is to "Set my goals high, but obtainable," and although I may not always reach all of my goals that I have set, I should always be proud of what I have done. My final philosophy, everyone is...

Me Myself and I

...Me, Myself & I By Andrea Bridglal Everyone is born into this world innocent. How you live your life, day by day, the decisions you make, now that’s what really affects you. Sometimes, it might not always be your fault. There are people who will always try to bring you down. They’ll try to hurt you. There will always be someone to tell you that you aren’t good enough. If you let it affect you, now that’s on you. That was my mistake. Growing up in New York City, with a single parent, isn’t the most difficult thing in the world, but it sure isn’t that easy. My parents have been divorced since I was three and I never really had any kind of relationship with my dad. He’s an alcoholic and growing up, I realized I would never have the bond that I wanted to have with him. Unfortunately, it took me way to long to realize that. Instead, I pushed away the people who did care and those who did try to be there for me; my grandparents, my uncle, and most importantly, my mom. I felt like I was alone even though I wasn’t. Not only did I push people away, I found it very difficult to let people in. On top of that, I was different. I come from a West Indian, Islamic background and growing up as a minority made it even harder to make friends. September 11, 2001 changed my life completely. No, I didn’t lose a loved one but I did lose something with equal value, self respect. My self-esteem was shot at 7 years old. I became ashamed of who I am, the color of my skin, the texture of...

...years to create who I am today. Within these years, I have been given the freedom to explore the world in order to satisfy my curiosity toward all the strange and wonderful things in the world around me. I grew up in a healthy family. I had an elder sister and a younger brother and this made my childhood days more colorful. My parents both had stable careers and this provided us with more opportunities to learn what we desired to. I remember when I was a young boy; my parents bought us a piano. I have been exploring music ever since my sister started taking piano lessons. This affected me so much that I insisted to my parents that I also wanted to learn piano. So I started my musical journey and continue it to this day. I finally completed my grade eight piano with a merit. After all the hardship I went through, success was finally shown in my result. I did not end my music after I went to secondary school. There, I joined the Chinese Orchestra Society. My purpose in joining this society was to learn more about my own traditional culture's music. I took a position in strings and my musical instrument is named "erhu". It is a traditional Chinese musical instrument similar to the violin. Instead of having 4 strings, an erhu only has two strings which can also produce beautiful musical notes as a violin does. I absolutely love the erhu and I have discovered that with the my background in piano, I am learning with tremendous speed. My teacher said that I am bestowed with talent...

...Third Generation (3G) mobile devices and services will transform wireless communications in to on-line, real-time connectivity. 3G wireless technology will allow an individual to have immediate access to location-specific services that offer information on demand. Mobile phones are rapidly becoming the preferred means of personal communication, creating the world's largest consumer electronics industry. The rapid and efficient deployment of new wireless data and Internet services has emerged as a critical priority for communications equipment manufacturers. Network components that enable wireless data services are fundamental to the next-generation network infrastructure. Wireless data services are expected to see the same explosive growth in demand that Internet services and wireless voice services have seen in recent years. Telecommunications service providers and network operators are embracing the recently adopted global third generation (3G) wireless standards in order to address emerging user demands and to provide new services. The concept of 3G wireless technology represents a shift from voice-centric services to multimedia-oriented (voice, data, video, fax) services. In addition, heavy demand for remote access to personalized data is fueling development of applications, such as the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and multimedia management, to complement the 3G protocols. Complementary standards, such as Bluetooth, will enable interoperability between a mobile terminal...

For others, it's a coral paradise they are free to explore and enjoy, without having to share it with any tourists. And there's always the thrill of knowing that the work their parents are doing over on the research island is not only top secret but incredibly important for humankind. ...Types of Fallacies 1. Appeal to Ignorance Appeal to ignorance happens when one individual utilizes another individual’s lack of information on a specific subject as proof that his or her own particular argument is right. She didn't say that I couldn't borrow her car, so I figured it was just fine if I borrowed it for the weekend. 2. Appeal to Authority  This sort of error is also known as “Argumentum Verecundia” (argument from modesty). Instead of concentrating on the benefits of an argument, the arguer will attempt to append their argument to an individual of power or authority in an effort to give trustworthiness to their argument. No philosopher has ever successfully resolved the problem of evil. 3. Appeal to Popular Opinion  This sort of appeal is when somebody asserts that a thought or conviction is correct since it is the thing that the general population accept. Mormonism is one of the fastest growing sects of Christianity today so that whole story about Joseph Smith getting the golden plates that, unfortunately, disappeared back into heaven, must be true! 4. Association Fallacy  Sometimes called “guilt by affiliation,” this happens when somebody connects a particular thought or drill to something or somebody negative so as to infer blame on another individual. Having a lot of friends who speak out in a prejudiced way and not distancing yourself from their statements...
