OR/PACU Observation Assignment
1. Introduction On Thursday, the 24th of May, I had the opportunity to visit the operating room at the Sanford hospital. I thought this was going to be atypical day in the OR where everything flows smoothly as if the staff are rehearsing a well-known choreographed dance. Things did not turn out how I imagined them to from the moment I stepped onto the unit. The team I observed appeared disorganized, frazzled, and rushed. Much of the chaos I witnessed boiled down to an error in communication. This all started with the patient failing to inform staff of the medications she was on and came to a head when the surgical techs, physician, and nurse did not understand what the other party in the team was trying to communicate.

I have had the opportunity to witness this particular procedure before, but this time was unique in part due to the fact that the patient’s hip was not broken, but rather the rod inserted into her humorous was bent due to a motor vehicle accident. This required all the old hardware to be removed and a new set be placed. This procedure took about five hours from the time the room was prepped to the time the patient was moved to the PACU. The patient was still in the PACU when I left due to there not being any available beds on a med/surg unit at the facility or on the orthopedic unit at the old Broadway
