Nadia Al-Hadad: My Experience In The Bay Area

Nadia Al-hadad was born September 21, 1966 in an Arabic speaking country known as Yemen. She immigrated to the U.S. when she was in her twenties because her and her family were trying to escape the growing poverty. Nadia is a proud mother of four children, she is unemployed and is thinking about going back to school, she is very good at math and wants to pursue some career that would involve mathematics. She is a stay at home house wife who enjoys watching soap operas and reading the Quran. She is a proud Arabic Muslim who is happy to be living in the Bay Area. I decided to interview my neighbor because I always say hi to her but never really talked with her. I thought that this project would be a good way to get to know her.

1)Q: How would you describe your identity? Do you think it has impacted your experience in the Bay Area? How so?

Political? How? Why?
A: Yes we are Muslims and we do our daily prayers, we follow our religious holidays, and we follow the teachings in the Quran. My family is a little political, we want America to stay out of the middle east and we have our own opinions about politics. Why? because I am Arabic and grew up in a Muslim country and it’s important to be political to understand what is going on involving my home country and the U.S.
3)Q: What was the major news events in your life? How did you feel about it? What influence did it have on you?
A: 9/11 was the biggest event and it made me feel scared. People started to see me as a dangerous stranger. It is good to stand out but not always. I went out a little less after it happened because I didn't want to be looked at as a terrorist.
4)Q: What were your hopes for yourself and your family upon arrival to the Bay Area?
A: We had little hope back in Yemen so when I got to the U.S. I just wanted a better life and education for me and my kids.
