Chapter:1 Project Management in our Contemporary Society
Project management: Project management provides an organization with powerful tools that improve its ability to plan, implement, and control its activities as well the ways in which it utilizes its people and resources.
Forces of PM: (i) The exponential expansion of human knowledge, (ii) The growing demand for a broad range of complex, sophisticated, customized goods and services and (iii) the evaluation of worldwide competitive markets for the production and consumption of goods and services.
Steps of PM: Part I, Project Initiation describes how projects are selected for implementation. It also covers the role of the project manager, the various ways that projects can be organized, and the special requirements for managing a cross-cultural project. Project budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, monitoring/information systems, and controlling are then discussed in Part II, Project implementation. Finally, Part III, Project termination concludes the discussion with a description of project auditing and termination.
The Project Manager: The project manager is expected to integrate all aspects of the project, ensure that the proper knowledge and resources are available when and where needed, and above all, ensure that the expected results are produced in a timely, cost-effective manner.
The definition of Project: The PMI has defined a project as “A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or services”
Why Project Management: In particular, the projects form of organization allows the manager to be responsive to: (1) The client and the environment, (2) Identify and correct problems at an early date (3) Make timely decisions about trade-offs between conflicting projects goals, and (4) Ensure that managers of the separate tasks that comprise the project do not optimize the performance of

Discuss Strong Emotions Presented in Shut Out - by Naim

...Discuss strong emotions presented in Shut out and three other poems. In this essay I will be discussing how strong emotions are presented in Christina Rossetti's poems. I will discuss different emotions which Rossetti expresses in four poems which are shut out; echo; twice and remember.   Hope is a feeling of expectation or wish for a particular thing to happen, and it is used in 'Shut Out' as the speaker begins by saying that "the door was shut", and instead of being trapped in, the door shuts the speaker out of a place of happiness. Doors resembling opening and closing rather than permanent closure. However this indicates on her character as only a specific selection can go in, which suggests she must have committed a sinful act which is why the door has been shut on her. Rossetti uses caesura here, and by using a full stop, it suggests that there is no hope for her to be able to go through the door which she wants to enter. On the other hand, in the poem 'Echo, we see that she is very hopeful that her lover will "come to me" in dreams and repeats this many times which suggests that she is almost certain that he will return to her in her dreams, as although their "wakening should have been in paradise", she begins to question the difference between paradise and her dreams, as she is with her lover in both places so she feels that the only way for her to be able to be happy is if she is constantly visited by her lover in her dreams. In the poem 'Remember', the speaker is...

Globalization

...International Business What is globalization? G lobalization is a process providing connections between countries, in terms of imports, exports, machinery, education, trade, labor and so on. The main aspect of globalization is financial relations between countries. When considering globalization in economic terms, opening up the boarders of a country in order to free trade, as well as capital flow and labor is crucial. Thomas L. Friedman in his book named “The World Is Flat” defined globalization as a flat world. He says that in this world, people should run faster to stay in place and not fall behind. He states that governments, companies and people have no choice but to adapt to this situation (Friedman). Globalization has had many benefits for countries. It has produced millions of jobs in poor countries, transferred capital from rich to poor countries, and provided opportunities for governments to learn from others how to start the development path for their country. For instance, let’s assume that we have a city and a village separated by a river. By connecting the two through a bridge, all different kinds of trade can take place. The villagers might have a comparative advantage in producing their factor endowment that can be milk, and the city has an advantage in producing tractors. By trading, both parties will be better off. Proponents of globalization believe that this is a positive -sum game. Both enjoy the benefits, and as the whole share grows, the share of each...

Manufacturing Output Rises in the Us

...An economic revival is here according to an article in The Atlantic titled “America’s Coming Manufacturing Revolution”. In the author’s own words, “The combination of lower energy prices, innovative information technologies, and advances in robotics and materials science are powering a manufacturing revolution that will reinvigorate the U.S. economy,” (Naím, Apr. 21, 2014). Bold words considering the recent financial crisis and drama in the geopolitical arena, but is there enough evidence to back his claims of this so called “manufacturing revolution”? Several news outlets are reporting gains in manufacturing operations such as increases in labor and use of factory space. Using this information, I hope to describe the elements used to determine manufacturing output and their overall effect on the manufacturing sector from the viewpoint of an accountant. In cost accounting for manufacturing companies, direct labor, direct materials, and manufacturing overhead are typically on the top of the spreadsheet and correlate with the amount of goods being produced. In regards to labor, the ADP research institute reported an additional 28,000 workers hired by US manufacturers in March of this year. (Woellert, Apr. 2, 2014) Although the ratio of direct laborers to indirect laborers is not stated, variable costs in US manufacturing certainly have risen, which is almost always associated with a rise in activity levels. Unfortunately, the ADP’s assessment did not include information...

Does Washington Consensus Provide Sound Economic Advice?

...Development of economic thinking has been providing different policy guidance throughout the years formulated to cure problems of developing countries and most often these policy prescriptions have been used developed countries as a reference point. Policies that were offered reflected waves of economic thoughts and problems the world economy was facing. In 1776 Adam Smith’s invisible hand and market liberalism was followed by John Stuart Mill’s political economy problems and utilitarianism in 1848. Then these main ideas have been have been superseded by the theories of ‘the Big Push’, industrialization and structuralist approach in 1940-1960 after which there has been a shift from physical to human capital in 1970. But what is more important is the period since 1980 when the heyday of developmental economics brought shift to market liberalism, structural adjustment, institutional economics and the shift towards Washing Consensus. In the years of transition from command economies to market economies in 1990’s in many countries it was a tendency to implement policies supported by the framework of Washington Consensus and starting this millennium what has mostly been happening is the reaction to failures of Washington Consensus and ongoing experimentations that are targeted to find some answers to the everlasting problem of how to reduce poverty and enhance economic growth. Many of these one-fits-all policy prescriptions failed to prove their efficiency or that they are working...

Whale Hunting

...Japan's whaling fleet was headed home from the southern ocean after ending its annual Antarctic hunt with only a third of its expected catch, news reports from Japan said Friday. The hunt ended three days ago with a catch of 266 minke whales and one fin whale, officials from Japan's Fisheries Agency said, according to one report from Australia's ABC news online. The Sea Shephed Society, which sent a fleet of vessels to the southern ocean to block the hunt, proclaimed victory on its website. "Operation Divine Wind is over! The Japanese whalers are going home!" the Sea Shepherd headline read. "There are hundreds of whales swimming free in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary that would now be dead if we had not been down there for the last three months. That makes us very happy indeed," Sea Shepherd's Paul Watson is quoted as saying on the organization's website. News of the Japanese whaling fleet's withdrawal comes four days after the Institute of Cetacean Research, which oversees the Japanese whaling program, reported a confrontation between the Japanese ships and Sea Shepherd's ship Bob Barker. The Bob Barker fired more than 40 flares and aimed a "high-powered" laser beam at the Japanese ships for more than 50 minutes, the institute said in a news release. Watson said that with the high-seas showdown, "the whaling season was effectively over for the season." Japan hunts whales every year despite a worldwide moratorium on whaling, utilizing a loophole in the law that allows...

Globalization

...Globalization and our Responsibilities Vanessa Strachan Saint Leo University Globalization and our Responsibilities Globalization Globalization is the integration of the world’s economies; it helps to increase productivity, which can raise the standard of living. It is driven by technology advancements in communications and transportation and motivated by the desire for free markets. “Globalization can be technological (the Internet), economic (trade, pro- duction), cultural (television). Globalization can also foster international solidarity. But the dominant view is that globalization means increased commercial relations between people of different countries” (Unknown, 2009). Globalization is the opportunity for developing countries to tap into the world’s economy, which will allow the opportunity to sell many goods to as many people around the world. Globalization includes markets and production. “Globalization of markets refers to the merging of historically distinct and separate national markets into one huge global marketplace and the globalization of production refers to sourcing goods and services from locations around the globe to take advantage of national differences in the cost and quality of factors of production (such as labor, energy, land and capital)” (Hill, 2011). Globalization is an opportunity for big corporations as well as for small businesses; it is the movement of jobs, goods, finances, and investments. With the advancement of technology...
