The Nanticoke Tribe The Nanticoke tribe became known for sheltering escaped slaves during the early days of American history. (Native Languages...n.pag) They were also known as the People of the Tidewater, or the Tidewater People. The Nanticoke indians lost most of who they really were. The last person to speak their native language passed away several decades ago. Now that the Nanticokes lost their native language, they all speak English in todays time. It is very unfortunate and unfair that the Nanticoke tribe lost so much including their native language, customs and their religion along with many other things. One of those myths is called, The Pretty Maiden. Here is how the myth goes. There was once a young lady who was very pretty, all of the men wished for her as a wife. Even the animals desired for her to have as their wife! There were three brave animals, an owl, a skunk and a beaver who all three tried convincing her to be their wife. First went the owl, the young lady only criticized the owl and denied his offer. The same thing happened with the skunk and then lastly with the beaver. When the beaver went to ask for her hand in marriage, the lady had fallen into a creek and had yelled for the beavers help. When the beaver got there to help her, he asked her if she would be his wife. When the young lady said no and insulted the beaver, the beaver left her in the creek and no one else went to help her either. She had no respect for anyone and only cared about herself. She ended up getting carried down the creek by the current and drowned. This myth shows that being rude to others does not do any good for oneself.
