Gaining Faith The bell is close to ringing and releasing me for the rest of the day from the most hated place on earth…school. However, today, I wouldn’t mind staying over a few extra minutes to avoid the intense quiz session that is about to take place in my Memi’s car. Last night, I heard my mom on the phone with my Memi telling her all about my new boyfriend, and I’m sure she is just chomping at the bit to know everything about him. I already know what her first question is going to be. “Does he have Jesus in his heart?” I never understood why that was such a big deal to her until now. Throughout my life, my Memi was constantly lecturing my parents for not taking me to church as much as they should, and for not teaching me all about the Bible at a young age. I never understood why she was so obsessed and driven to get me interested in church. I always thought that I would start going to church once I felt like I knew what everyone was talking about, once I could fully understand everything and the hidden meanings. I didn’t think there was a reason for me to go to church until I was older. However, I think that when something major happens and leaves an impact on your life, there is one clear place to run to…God. Things changed for me. Now, I desperately want the bell to ring so that I can go take care of my Memi. I want to be there for her the way she was always there for me, making me smarter every day and guiding me in all the right directions. She taught me little things that every person should know, like manners and proper etiquette, to more academic things like memorizing all the states and capitals in alphabetical order. The last day I saw my Memi, I walked in her room and found her half asleep, wrapped in her cozy, pale pink sheets; the same room where I spent many afternoons watching Jerry Springer without her permission, and where I spent many nights cuddled up with her as she tickled my back trying to lure me to sleep. The worst pain I’ve ever known is seeing my grandmother leaving me, slowly, but there was absolutely nothing I could do to make her stay. What turned out to be her last request for me was that I snuggle up with her one last and take a nap, and it was, easily, one of my best memories with her. My grandmother was so content and understanding about her situation, but I, however, was not. I blamed anyone and everyone I could. I even went as far as blaming the government for poisoning its’ citizens. I didn’t want to believe that something so unfortunate could happen to someone so loving and kind-hearted as my Memi for no apparent reason. For the first few weeks after my Memi’s death, I was so angry at God for forcing my Memi to leave me, I didn’t want to believe in him at all. Some days I thought he was punishing me for something I had done, and some days I thought he was pure evil. My mother helped me understand my Memi’s reasoning on being content about her situation. My mom noticed that I was angry about my grandmother’s passing instead of sad. She explained to me that my grandmother had so much faith in the Lord and the lessons she had learned throughout her life through her faith in Him, that she had no doubt she was going to heaven when her time here with us ran out. After my mom told me this, I was inspired to open my heart to God. I was never able to fully believe in the Lord until I saw his magic with my own eyes. I doubted God many times, but I always felt like I had my Memi as my guardian angel. The moment I truly regained my faith in the Lord was while I was hunting a deer for the first time. I wanted to impress my boyfriend and his family, so I prayed to my Memi that I would be able to shoot and kill my first deer this day. After waiting most of the afternoon, I spotted a spike. I aimed the crossbow just right and hit him in the lungs (a perfect shot). Once we started trying to track the deer, we noticed that there was no blood trail. After talking up my perfect shot, I knew I would be crushed if we were not going to be able to find the deer. We tried tracking the deer for a solid hour, and I knew that the odds of us finding my deer were now low. I needed help. For the second time that day, I prayed to my Memi that she would help me find my deer. Within a minute of saying “Amen”, I spotted my deer lying in the pine needles. After analyzing the deer, we realized the reason for no blood trail was because the arrow didn’t expand the way it should, and caused the arrow to only leave a little hole. The hole was deadly, though. I then knew that the Lord was listening and working miracles for me. There have been other occasions where I have prayed to my Memi, and miracles have happened for me. My faith has not been restored because the Lord did favors for me, but my faith has been restored because I see the real powers that the Lord has. He is capable of anything, and though we may not understand His greater plan at the time, I always know that devoting my life to God and putting all of my faith in Him is the best decision I can make in my life. I know my Memi is very proud.

...------------------------------------------------- My most embarrassing moment My Most Embarrassing Moment Baum, Narrative Essay Have you ever had a moment in your life that you can just not forget about? I have a time in my life that I have never been so embarrassed in front of so many people. Some things are easier to remember, and some are easier to forget. I can remember this day as if it happened yesterday. It was a Friday night and I went to eat at Bonnie & Clyde’s pizza with my family for my brother’s birthday party. Out of all nights the place was packed and there was not one empty chair in the building. We sit down at the table and we enjoy the birthday. We eat pizza, cake, and everyone was having a good time. I thought I would be nice and start to clean up everyone’s plates and cups to make some room on the table for everyone. They give you the pizza on a round silver tray, so I started to pile up all the plates, cups, and silverware on to the tray. As my mother asked me “do you need any help?” I told her no I got it and started to walk up to the counter to drop off the tray. I knew that with all the stuff piled onto the tray that it was going to be too heavy but I wanted to try and carry it anyway without any help. As I am walking the tray up their stacked full I tripped over a step in the floor and I am sure you can guess what happened next. I dropped the tray everywhere and I feel to the floor. The trash went everywhere along with...

Narratives Essay

...A powerful story that retells events in history and that’s purpose is to give meaning and direction to a certain people in the present time are called narratives .All narratives have three basic parts characters, plot and plot resolution. These stories begin with a conflict or problem and end with the problem or conflict being resolved. The leading character is the protagonist, the character who causes the conflict is the antagonist and the additional characters who get involved in the conflict are the agonists. In biblical narratives GOD is always the protagonist, the devil or evil power is always the antagonist and the additional characters the agonists are God’s followers. The plot of a biblical narrative is the struggle that GOD made Christians in his image and then Satan or evil enters in and tries to persuade GOD’s people to allow evil and sin to transform them. The conclusion of the biblical narrative happens when GOD saves his people from the hold of evil and transforms them back into his image. As Christians we have to very careful when reading biblical narratives not to make some common mistakes. Understanding that these words of GOD are not necessarily direct words to us individually but a resource to guide us in daily living. Readers should not look beyond the immediate meaning of the text “allegorize” but instead focus on the clear meaning. Ignoring “decontextualizing” the history and literal text can allow the reader to make the scripture say what they want it...

Which Essay Is Better: a Narrative or a Descriptive?

...Which Essay is Better: A Narrative or A Descriptive?   Ever read a story and say to yourself, “What’s happening?” Whenever I read a descriptive essay, that’s what I would say. In this essay I would be comparing and contrasting two types of essays, a narrative and descriptive. I have chosen “Are the rich happy?” by Stephen Leacock 1916 and “Sister Flowers” by Maya Angelou, n.d. By writing my essay, I want to give my views on each and decide which I would rather write. Narrative Essay A narrative essay reflects a personal opinion that is based on your own experiences. This helps you bring a reader into your very own mind and shows him/her the topic you’re writing about through your eyes. Telling a story or event the way it happened for you. It also could provide a sort of lesson or moral to be learned from the outcome of the story as well as what the writer did that contributed to it or not. It’s more on a personal level that any one reading could say that happened to them or that they learned from the story by not doing whatever it was that the writer did. In Stephen Leacock’s “Are the Rich Happy?” the author writes about his experiences with his friends, with of modest income. Most of it, all in his opinion, points out the problems or troubles those with an existential amount of funds in their bank accounts. He goes on to give some examples that he encountered several of his friends going through. “A friend of mine who has ten thousand dollars a year told me the other...

Reflective Essay-Personal Narrative

...So, I typed my little fingers off and picked up a few grammatical textbooks along the way. Every essay my grades got a little better, maybe he was going easy on me but I’ll never know. Concluding the year, I had to do my senior research paper, which I chose the topic of “The Brain in Love.” Precisely 15 pages later, I passed in my paper and earned an A. I honestly don’t know who was more surprised, him or me—or my mom. Regardless, I proved that I was capable of producing great pieces of...

Why do you think that this kind of thing happens? How many people do you know that have went to college and can honestly say that they are still working in general to graduate? Personally, there are not many people that I know who have graduated from a college which is why we see most people going back to school after so many years. There can be many reasons why a person does not finish school the first time around. May it be because of money issues, their interest were elsewhere at the time, a change in career directed their focus elsewhere, but whatever that may be it happens more than we would like to think. I just so happen to fall into this category of people going back to school after I had been once before but never finished. Throughout this essay I will inform readers on why I am returning back to school, my purpose behind it all, obstacles that have gotten in my way because I am returning and my ambitions that drove me to even consider going back to school. There are many reasons that I am going back to school. One main reason that I am going back...

How To Write A Personal Narrative Essay

...Most of my life has been leading up to this moment. One of my biggest dreams in what short- life I have lived out is finally attending college. With my coming of age, my dream is rapidly approaching and I can nearly taste it on the tip of my tongue. However, this essay going to be my first hurdle to cross over. As a child, I have grown to despise essay writing. I have always had the grammar rules memorized, but never had the artistic flow of my classmates. This results in me having lower opinion of my intellectual prowess and value. I can see even the lowest in my class achieving significantly better grades in me. Could this be jealousy or a part of my ego? No. It was me simply not having the writer’s touch. Nonetheless, there was a different touch that I was gifted and that was the tremendous interest and appreciation for technology and computers. As a child in elementary school, I had exactly 0 friends. I was typically the odd one out. The...

Theme and Narrative Elements in a Short Story Essay

...A short story illustrates the effectiveness of the plot, particularly one that has a surprise ending such as, “The Gift of the Magi”. In this story of Jim and Della, they are approaching Christmas and have very little money to spend on one another. They each want to surprise the other one with a marvelous gift for Christmas but they have little money and Della only has $1.87. Della ends up cutting her hair for the money while Jim sells his cherished watch. Through selfless acts done for love, they each end up giving one another a Christmas gift they will always remember and cherish. It didn’t matter to either of them what they had to do in order to provide the gift. The theme was portrayed by the literary elements within the story. Plot, point of view and symbolism are just a few of the literary elements which helped developed the theme of the story. The story I read and critiqued was, “The gift of the Magi”. In order to find the theme of this short story, I had to look beyond the plot, which tells the reader what happened in the story (Clugston, 2010, section 5.5). The theme of this story I believe would be “selfless love”. Other readers, who read the same short story as I did, might have an entirely different theme. This is actually to be expected and is even common. This is because every reader has a different relationship to literature due to each individual’s different experience throughout life. The theme of selfless love, I chose due to I feel like the writer chose...

...Running head: NARRATIVE ESSAY Literacy Narrative Ryan Hickey Western Governors University Student ID # 000504445 NARRATIVE ESSAY 2 Literacy Narrative I have never been fond of fluorescent lights. Their low almost inaudible hum, their constant flickering, and how they seem to bathe the room in a bluish/purplish hue, always seemed to put me on edge. I always tried to be the first one to arrive, and I usually was. Sitting alone in the empty conference room always seemed almost alien to me, even though I had been there many times before. Perhaps it was the anticipation of the upcoming work that caused it, or my body's self defense mechanism releasing adrenaline before the upcoming verbal sparring that always transpired. Whatever it was, it seemed to enhance my surroundings. The hum of the air conditioning clicking on, the whirl of the overhead fans, and the faint hum of the fluorescent lighting. It seemed like eternity had passed before everyone started to slowly trickle in. I scrutinize each person as they entered the room and have a seat at the long oak conference table. It never ceases to amaze me how each person was very different, with little in common. It was a true melting pot in every sense. The only real common thread was baseball. "This is what it takes to run a major league franchise, getting perspective from every possible background" I thought to myself. It was in these player evaluation meetings where I truly grasped the challenging task of being able to effectively...

...ENGLISH 106 1 Narrative Essay Unit 1, Assignment 1 Jeffrey Wayne Van Egeren ENGLISH 106 2 Document Contents This document contains the author’s narrative essay involving the topic chosen for a thesis statement. The thesis statement will be on the subject “A Family Reunion”. The final page holds an outline used to perform this essay. ENGLISH 106 3 A Family Reunion With this assignment, I have chosen “A Family Reunion” to incorporate within my thesis statement. I believe that this topic is best suited for me because my family has never had a happy or joyous reunion that I can remember. The disease of alcoholism runs very deep within the family history, and for that reason, I grew up in a very dysfunctional family setting. With that being stated, I will begin by saying, “Family Reunions are nothing but chaos, arguments, and showing off. Nothing enjoyable or happily memorable ever arises from having times put aside for this said occasion.” My parents were divorced when I was only 4 years old and to this day I still see the burnt images of their final argument instilled within my mind. My mother, rest her soul, had done what she could for our family, regardless of the fact that my father had given absolutely no support for the 9 children. I remember seeing my father, maybe twice, within...

...Narrative Essay The Circus by Matkurbanova Gulzat It was a long time ago, when my children were still young. I took them to the city zoo because I wanted them to see real animals. I noticed that animals were behaving strange. Some were just laying there and doing nothing. Others were just moving their heads or walking in a circle. They rushed to any place where children feed them. There I saw a little-sad tiger. I felt very sorry for it, because the cub will never know freedom and life in the forest. Then I disliked the zoo. A year later I brought my daughters to the circus. As we entered the building, I could smell sharp and unpleasant odor which made me sick. Since we came early, my daughters started playing with other children in the lobby where there were a lot of attractions for children. "Mom, animals will act in the arena?," Umida, my elder daughter asked with glowing eyes. "Of course," I said. Both my girls were very happy. "Mom,How are you feeling?" asked Umida. "Absolutely awful," I stammered. Shoira, my younger daughter, looked up at the two of us from under her eyelashes and patted my arm. "Sweetie, give me a hug, please, " I asked her. She shook her head and hugged me. "Good, now I feel much better," I said. In the arena, there were clowns, jugglers and acrobats. But a special delight in children were caused by performance of animals. We saw beautiful animals that played ball, spinning the hoops and performing complex tricks. Of course, back then I...

...Jessica Glenn Period: 06 Narrative Essay The Broken Shall Get the Last Laugh She sat on the ground, shuddering against the cold and squirming as she felt her bones ache, pressed against the concrete. She didn’t know which felt worse, the harsh December cold whipping against her already raw and beaten face, or her soul, battered and repressed to the point that it-and the girl herself-no longer wanted to exist. She wondered why she was here, how she had gotten to be so unhappy but she knew exactly why. And it was all her fault. Red. Everything she saw was red. The shirt he wore the day they met, on a day when he was the warmest thing on the rainy Sunday streets. The valentines bear he gave her a month later. Her skin when he started hitting her. Her wrist after long strenuous arguments. The nail polish he bought to say sorry. The knees pressed against the floor after hours of begging to not walk out the door. “No” he yelled at her, losing control of his temper like she had lost herself months ago. He told her she couldn’t leave. She had to be thrown out. Of course was all she thought. He has to have power. Things began to change for the worse. Black was her solace. Black was what she saw when she passed out from the pain. Black was the color of the ice pack she snuck in the middle of the night when he was asleep. Blue. The last days were blue. His shoe laces when he kicked her to the ground. The dress she wore when they went to a Halloween party, and were voted best couple...
