A Family Reunion

With this assignment, I have chosen “A Family Reunion” to incorporate within my thesis statement. I believe that this topic is best suited for me because my family has never had a happy or joyous reunion that I can remember. The disease of alcoholism runs very deep within the family history, and for that reason, I grew up in a very dysfunctional family setting. With that being stated, I will begin by saying, “Family Reunions are nothing but chaos, arguments, and showing off. Nothing enjoyable or happily memorable ever arises from having times put aside for this said occasion.” My parents were divorced when I was only 4 years old and to this day I still see the burnt images of their final argument instilled within my mind. My mother, rest her soul, had done what she could for our family, regardless of the fact that my father had given absolutely no support for the 9 children. I remember seeing my father, maybe twice, within the time of the divorce and my 12th birthday. My mother had serious health issues; however, she still managed to take care of all 9 of us. Alcoholism, a very cunning disease, runs deep through my family history. I am a recovering alcoholic myself with almost 2 years of sobriety. I have been on and off the wagon several times. When alcohol is introduced into a gathering alcoholic family, the outcome can and will be a seriously unhappy one. At the start, everything seems to go well and manners of everyone stay level within the gathering. However, as time moves forward and the alcohol take its nasty affect, everything becomes out of control. Brothers and sisters forget about the family setting and chaos enters the picture. Everyone forgets the real reason why their mother has asked them together. This goes for any of the holidays as well. Our family really had no set guidelines

for strict obedience and respect for others, not even each other. The more the drinking continued the louder and more offensive everyone would get. Arguments really became the subject of matter at our family reunions. It made no difference if the topic was on sports, work, personal, money, the weather, or even the neighbors. When one brother, or sister had something to say, if was always intervened by another in a provoking way. Which team was the best, who in the family had the best job, who was married to the perfect person, which one of the members had the most money? It just did not matter. The main intent was to start a fight. The arguing stirred up the fights in due time. Whether the fights were verbal or the physical brawl neither was of any concern. Our family could never get along with each other. However, have the gathering and everything was well between everyone. One major event, that I will never forget, was the reunion shortly after we had buried my brother Dale. I am the youngest of the 9 children and Dale was the make shift father that would take me everywhere he would go. After the reunion started, the conversation of my brother’s death began and each individual had the other to blame for it. Shortly after this reunion and all the temperatures cooled down, my mother finally agreed that trying to continue the reunions was of no use. The gatherings were not bringing any of the family back together and should just be left at that. At the age of 12, my father had returned to the picture only to spread the family even further apart. My father’s return was the cause of my mother’s stroke and eventually her death. On that note, I will say that this is the reason I have hatred and completely fill with disgust when family reunions are mentioned. I have never seen any good within such gatherings.

...------------------------------------------------- My most embarrassing moment My Most Embarrassing Moment Baum, Narrative Essay Have you ever had a moment in your life that you can just not forget about? I have a time in my life that I have never been so embarrassed in front of so many people. Some things are easier to remember, and some are easier to forget. I can remember this day as if it happened yesterday. It was a Friday night and I went to eat at Bonnie & Clyde’s pizza with my family for my brother’s birthday party. Out of all nights the place was packed and there was not one empty chair in the building. We sit down at the table and we enjoy the birthday. We eat pizza, cake, and everyone was having a good time. I thought I would be nice and start to clean up everyone’s plates and cups to make some room on the table for everyone. They give you the pizza on a round silver tray, so I started to pile up all the plates, cups, and silverware on to the tray. As my mother asked me “do you need any help?” I told her no I got it and started to walk up to the counter to drop off the tray. I knew that with all the stuff piled onto the tray that it was going to be too heavy but I wanted to try and carry it anyway without any help. As I am walking the tray up their stacked full I tripped over a step in the floor and I am sure you can guess what happened next. I dropped the tray everywhere and I feel to the floor. The trash went everywhere along......

Narratives Essay

...A powerful story that retells events in history and that’s purpose is to give meaning and direction to a certain people in the present time are called narratives .All narratives have three basic parts characters, plot and plot resolution. These stories begin with a conflict or problem and end with the problem or conflict being resolved. The leading character is the protagonist, the character who causes the conflict is the antagonist and the additional characters who get involved in the conflict are the agonists. In biblical narratives GOD is always the protagonist, the devil or evil power is always the antagonist and the additional characters the agonists are God’s followers. The plot of a biblical narrative is the struggle that GOD made Christians in his image and then Satan or evil enters in and tries to persuade GOD’s people to allow evil and sin to transform them. The conclusion of the biblical narrative happens when GOD saves his people from the hold of evil and transforms them back into his image. As Christians we have to very careful when reading biblical narratives not to make some common mistakes. Understanding that these words of GOD are not necessarily direct words to us individually but a resource to guide us in daily living. Readers should not look beyond the immediate meaning of the text “allegorize” but instead focus on the clear meaning. Ignoring “decontextualizing” the history and literal text can allow the reader to make the scripture say what they want......

Which Essay Is Better: a Narrative or a Descriptive?

...Which Essay is Better: A Narrative or A Descriptive?   Ever read a story and say to yourself, “What’s happening?” Whenever I read a descriptive essay, that’s what I would say. In this essay I would be comparing and contrasting two types of essays, a narrative and descriptive. I have chosen “Are the rich happy?” by Stephen Leacock 1916 and “Sister Flowers” by Maya Angelou, n.d. By writing my essay, I want to give my views on each and decide which I would rather write. Narrative Essay A narrative essay reflects a personal opinion that is based on your own experiences. This helps you bring a reader into your very own mind and shows him/her the topic you’re writing about through your eyes. Telling a story or event the way it happened for you. It also could provide a sort of lesson or moral to be learned from the outcome of the story as well as what the writer did that contributed to it or not. It’s more on a personal level that any one reading could say that happened to them or that they learned from the story by not doing whatever it was that the writer did. In Stephen Leacock’s “Are the Rich Happy?” the author writes about his experiences with his friends, with of modest income. Most of it, all in his opinion, points out the problems or troubles those with an existential amount of funds in their bank accounts. He goes on to give some examples that he encountered several of his friends going through. “A friend of mine who has ten thousand dollars a year told me the......

Reflective Essay-Personal Narrative

...So, I typed my little fingers off and picked up a few grammatical textbooks along the way. Every essay my grades got a little better, maybe he was going easy on me but I’ll never know. Concluding the year, I had to do my senior research paper, which I chose the topic of “The Brain in Love.” Precisely 15 pages later, I passed in my paper and earned an A. I honestly don’t know who was more surprised, him or me—or my mom. Regardless, I proved that I was capable of producing great pieces of...

Why do you think that this kind of thing happens? How many people do you know that have went to college and can honestly say that they are still working in general to graduate? Personally, there are not many people that I know who have graduated from a college which is why we see most people going back to school after so many years. There can be many reasons why a person does not finish school the first time around. May it be because of money issues, their interest were elsewhere at the time, a change in career directed their focus elsewhere, but whatever that may be it happens more than we would like to think. I just so happen to fall into this category of people going back to school after I had been once before but never finished. Throughout this essay I will inform readers on why I am returning back to school, my purpose behind it all, obstacles that have gotten in my way because I am returning and my ambitions that drove me to even consider going back to school. There are many reasons that I am going back to school. One main reason that I am going......

Theme and Narrative Elements in a Short Story Essay

...A short story illustrates the effectiveness of the plot, particularly one that has a surprise ending such as, “The Gift of the Magi”. In this story of Jim and Della, they are approaching Christmas and have very little money to spend on one another. They each want to surprise the other one with a marvelous gift for Christmas but they have little money and Della only has $1.87. Della ends up cutting her hair for the money while Jim sells his cherished watch. Through selfless acts done for love, they each end up giving one another a Christmas gift they will always remember and cherish. It didn’t matter to either of them what they had to do in order to provide the gift. The theme was portrayed by the literary elements within the story. Plot, point of view and symbolism are just a few of the literary elements which helped developed the theme of the story. The story I read and critiqued was, “The gift of the Magi”. In order to find the theme of this short story, I had to look beyond the plot, which tells the reader what happened in the story (Clugston, 2010, section 5.5). The theme of this story I believe would be “selfless love”. Other readers, who read the same short story as I did, might have an entirely different theme. This is actually to be expected and is even common. This is because every reader has a different relationship to literature due to each individual’s different experience throughout life. The theme of selfless love, I chose due to I feel like the writer chose...

...Running head: NARRATIVE ESSAY Literacy Narrative Ryan Hickey Western Governors University Student ID # 000504445 NARRATIVE ESSAY 2 Literacy Narrative I have never been fond of fluorescent lights. Their low almost inaudible hum, their constant flickering, and how they seem to bathe the room in a bluish/purplish hue, always seemed to put me on edge. I always tried to be the first one to arrive, and I usually was. Sitting alone in the empty conference room always seemed almost alien to me, even though I had been there many times before. Perhaps it was the anticipation of the upcoming work that caused it, or my body's self defense mechanism releasing adrenaline before the upcoming verbal sparring that always transpired. Whatever it was, it seemed to enhance my surroundings. The hum of the air conditioning clicking on, the whirl of the overhead fans, and the faint hum of the fluorescent lighting. It seemed like eternity had passed before everyone started to slowly trickle in. I scrutinize each person as they entered the room and have a seat at the long oak conference table. It never ceases to amaze me how each person was very different, with little in common. It was a true melting pot in every sense. The only real common thread was baseball. "This is what it takes to run a major league franchise, getting perspective from every possible background" I thought to myself. It was in these player evaluation meetings where I truly grasped the challenging task of being able to......

...Narrative Essay The Circus by Matkurbanova Gulzat It was a long time ago, when my children were still young. I took them to the city zoo because I wanted them to see real animals. I noticed that animals were behaving strange. Some were just laying there and doing nothing. Others were just moving their heads or walking in a circle. They rushed to any place where children feed them. There I saw a little-sad tiger. I felt very sorry for it, because the cub will never know freedom and life in the forest. Then I disliked the zoo. A year later I brought my daughters to the circus. As we entered the building, I could smell sharp and unpleasant odor which made me sick. Since we came early, my daughters started playing with other children in the lobby where there were a lot of attractions for children. "Mom, animals will act in the arena?," Umida, my elder daughter asked with glowing eyes. "Of course," I said. Both my girls were very happy. "Mom,How are you feeling?" asked Umida. "Absolutely awful," I stammered. Shoira, my younger daughter, looked up at the two of us from under her eyelashes and patted my arm. "Sweetie, give me a hug, please, " I asked her. She shook her head and hugged me. "Good, now I feel much better," I said. In the arena, there were clowns, jugglers and acrobats. But a special delight in children were caused by performance of animals. We saw beautiful animals that played ball, spinning the hoops and performing complex tricks. Of course, back then I...

...Jessica Glenn Period: 06 Narrative Essay The Broken Shall Get the Last Laugh She sat on the ground, shuddering against the cold and squirming as she felt her bones ache, pressed against the concrete. She didn’t know which felt worse, the harsh December cold whipping against her already raw and beaten face, or her soul, battered and repressed to the point that it-and the girl herself-no longer wanted to exist. She wondered why she was here, how she had gotten to be so unhappy but she knew exactly why. And it was all her fault. Red. Everything she saw was red. The shirt he wore the day they met, on a day when he was the warmest thing on the rainy Sunday streets. The valentines bear he gave her a month later. Her skin when he started hitting her. Her wrist after long strenuous arguments. The nail polish he bought to say sorry. The knees pressed against the floor after hours of begging to not walk out the door. “No” he yelled at her, losing control of his temper like she had lost herself months ago. He told her she couldn’t leave. She had to be thrown out. Of course was all she thought. He has to have power. Things began to change for the worse. Black was her solace. Black was what she saw when she passed out from the pain. Black was the color of the ice pack she snuck in the middle of the night when he was asleep. Blue. The last days were blue. ...In life everyone has a dream or two. I am not speaking of the ones we experience subconsciously or while we are sleeping. Many of us start dreaming from a tender age; discovery ways to achieve these dreams, goals and aspirations is a journey all by itself. This journey takes an incredibly amount of determination and discipline. We often dream about a direction that we want to take in life; having a passion for what we dream about is extremely important. This gives us the drive to endure the journey in the midst of the hindrances faced. I have dreamt numerous things while growing up. Most of my dreams were influenced by my environment as well as things that I found pleasure doing. I was often confused by the variety of professions I came in contact with. During my teenage years I found myself in the spotlight for the way I carried myself physically, that is, the way I dressed. People would approach me saying how much they admired my fashion. This brought me great joy inside and out; it also influenced me to uphold that standard in my dressing knowing that I was now being watched through a microscope. I have to say that “dressing up” was a hobby of mine. I felt like a princess in each garment I tried on; it’s like the world became a better place. When I stepped in those garments, I became someone else and I could be anyone I wanted to be. I would get butterflies in my stomach whenever I heard the bell ring each day for the dismissal of school. Whenever I got home, you could......

...Summer break had just ended. Where did the time go? Well it back to the books I said to myself I wonder what’s in store for me this year. I could hardly believe it’s my final year in school. Like my teachers would say “getting ready for the real world.” When I returned to school, I was so excited to see all of my friends, we hugged, we talked about summer vacations and then the bell rang from homeroom. I was in Mr. Henry’s homeroom, I was glad; he is cool one of the coolest teachers. Announcements came on and then it was off to Convocation. Mrs. Knowles addressed the entire school and then turned her attention to the seniors, she reminded us about the seriousness of this year and how at some point during the year we may have to make decisions that can affect our life forever! I am sitting thinking to myself “what kind of decision will have to make that will affect my life? I have a mother who makes those decisions for me.” The following day classes were in full swing, and the work load was heavy, but it was nothing I couldn’t handle. I had settled down a whole lot and my last report card was a reflection of it, it was the best report that I had gotten in years. And oh boy wasn’t my mother proud! The school year was going by so quickly before I could blink my eye we were taking year book pictures, getting measured for cap and grown and the deadlines or course work was almost here. I remember this particular morning, I arrived at school and just as I came out of the car.......

...It was a bizarre night, there appeared to be a freeze in the air. I was walking to my grandmother’s at sundown when all of a sudden some one jumped out, grabbed me, and held my hands forcefully behind my back. Then he whispered “Leave with me, or I’ll turn you in." I stated, “Turn me in for what?” He said that I had committed an offense at the art gallery last night, and that he was going to throw me in jail. “I don’t know what you are speaking about,” I said. Swiftly I felt a chill race down my spine. I turned around and saw two police officers come racing after me. My first instinct was to sprint for the apartment I lived in, but I forgot that tons of police would be there. I had no place to go, no one to run to. At last I walked all the way across town to my buddy Jamie’s house. She let me in and I told her what occurred. I asked her what I had done and she said that I was suspected of stealing a valuable painting from the art gallery. It was all over the news and the police were on a manhunt for me. Jamie gave me something to munch on and let me sleep there for the night. The next day she sent me off because she knew the police would be coming soon to investigate. Later, that same man I had gotten away from the day before found me. I tried to get away but I was unsuccessful. This time he had me for good. The last word I heard from him was when he called some one on the phone and he said, “…Yes, this is John…” After that he turned me in. I went to jail. The food......
