In Mary Rowlandson’s Narrative, “Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson”, she recounts her experience about being captured by Narragansett Indians. Throughout this text, Rowlandson makes it clear she believes that she survived only because of the help of the Lord. This narrative is written for a Catholic audience in hopes of sharing her experience of how the Lord guided her through her tough journey. Rowlandson makes a parallel between her captivity story and the bible when she claims there were “twenty-four” people captured by these “ravenous beast” to convey the idea that not only were the ones captured, including herself, among God but also the Narragansett tribe, that initially come off to be horrible individuals, …show more content…
Rowlandson claims there were “twenty-four” total individuals captured which creates an allusion to the 24 elders who sat beside God (129). The Bible states that there were 24 elders that sat amongst God while wearing white clothing; The white represents salvation, and the fact that they sit among God means that God has given them some authority. This perfectly relates to Rowlandson’s story because she believes God protected her from the Indians and allowed her to be taken alive instead of being killed. This day is when she was saved from death and also the day her spirit was saved. Her experience in captivity and the numerous miracles she experienced solidified her faith in God. With this being said, it can be argued that the twenty-four people that were taken captive also had their soul saved by God. Mary Rowlandson wants to portray the idea that she only survived this harsh experience because of the help from the Lord, therefore we should view her story, not as one from a survivor, but as proof of the Lord’s
