...Dear National Honor Society Faculty Council Members, I have written this rebuttal letter, in regard to not being accepted into the National Honor Society. When I first had found out that I had not made it into NHS, I was very surprised, and upset. After reading the letter numerous times, I could only conclude that something regarding social media had led to the notion and determination of a lack of character. I figured it would be best to know what exactly the violation was, and what the steps would be to fix the situation, by writing this letter. I went in and talked to Mr. Kraus for a good twenty minutes, and was able to further understand the situation. I had never given social media a second thought, and as an honor roll student involved...

...I believe that I best exemplify the service pillar of the National Honor Society. Service has always been a fundamental part of who I am as a person, and I have consistently sought out opportunities to give back to my community and make a positive impact on those around me. One example of my commitment to service is my involvement in a local soup kitchen. Every Saturday morning, I volunteer at the soup kitchen to help prepare and serve meals to those in need. I have been doing this for over two years now, and it has been a deeply rewarding experience. I have formed relationships with many of the regulars who come in for a hot meal, and it has been humbling to see the difference that a simple act of kindness can make in someone's day. Through this experience, I have learned the importance of empathy and compassion, and I have developed a deeper appreciation for...

...the varsity soccer team and I am not the most popular student at Turpin High School. This does not mean that I am not an excellent candidate for National Honor Society. Without being all the things that I previously mentioned, I firmly believe that I possess great attributes that allow me to be a leader, a scholar, and a honorable student. I have perseverance. During Varsity soccer tryouts this past year my self confidence was tested. Unfortunately, I found it was a struggle to make the Varsity team. I thought about quitting because I did not like the uncertainty and the feelings of insecurity that arose because of the situation. Sometimes people feel it is easier to quit than to push forward but I “pushed on”. In the end, I did make the Varsity team. I did not take the easy way out when soccer became...

...performance. This year, proceeds raised from the event will go toward the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization whose mission is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors. The Wounded Warrior Project has helped thousands of family and service members with medical, housing, along with numerous other types of support. This year’s event is split into three different competitions: Men’s Women’s, and Co-ed groups, which are composed of many Greek, Academic, Religious, and other UT organizations. The University of Toledo takes much pride in these events, raising awareness and donations toward a worthy cause. Current sponsors of Songfest include Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and Mortar Board National Honor Society, both of which hold their recognition and tapping ceremonies during the event. Each organization participating in Songfest was challenged to come up with a fundraising goal to go above and beyond what they raised last year supporting children diagnosed with terminal cancer, which was a grand total of $25,000. According to Joy T. Bennett’s journal article Stepping Up, Joy deliberates the importance of fundraising in sororities and fraternities toward their philanthropy, providing money to improve the lives of many people and ensuring that non-profit organizations are still able to exist. ...Goals Influenced by Hispanic Heritage: | | In anything that I decide to whole heartedly pursue in my life, I want to be an inspiration. I want to be a leader and a role model to my peers, but especially to my family and sisters. I want to be the one they look up to, the one they desire to be like through my academic achievements and extra-curricular activities that I have had the privilege to be a part of. My parents come from families that had to sacrifice education in order to provide for their families. My maternal grandmother never experienced any education beyond middle school, she was needed at home to help care for her siblings and forced to take on the role of a mother at a young age. She made sure they were bathed and feed, waking up in the morning to fix their breakfast and get them prepared for school. She had to drop her youngest sibling off at the babysitter’s house every day, so that she could attend to her other motherly duties, such as cleaning the house and grocery shopping. She was not able to go to school and gain a full education; she was forced to give that up so that she could help stabilize her family because her mother could not do it all alone. In the Hispanic heritage, family is first and we do whatever is necessary in order to put our family first and make sure they are cared for. It does not matter the circumstances. If we have to work three jobs in order to provide for our families, then that is what we will do without hesitation. My paternal...
