Naturalistic Observation Of Panera Bread

INTRODUCTION
This naturalistic observation examined interactions between two men eating at Panera Bread. The aim was to gain a better understanding of social cues, such as dress, posture, mannerisms, and body language, which may help more fully inform an observer of social interaction than conversation alone.

METHOD
The participants were two men eating at Panera Bread. “Peter” was approximately twenty years old, dressed in a denim shirt, a pair of jeans in dark acid wash, and a pair of navy blue chukka boots. He had a watch with black leather straps on his left wrist. He had his sleeves rolled up, his hair was about medium length with his bang to the right. “John” was approximately fifteen years old. John starts using his Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Peter says “[inaudible] got that game” John replies loudly “Yeah.” Peter says “Let me play.” John hands his phone to Peter.

6:06pm
Peter gives John's phone back to John. John asks “What did you get on the test for the permit” Peter replies “I don’t remember, but it was easy as [expletive].” John says “I get a hundred on my phone all the time”

The fact that Peter has already taken the learner’s permit and John has not, may suggest that Peter is older. Peter’s inability to remember his test score may suggest that Peter took the test a long time ago. Peter was comfortable using expletive when talking to John. This shows that they know each other well.

Peter looks at the observer and speaks to to John silently. The observer was unable to hear the conversation.

6:12pm
Peter says “Let’s go”. Peter and John stands up. Peter says “I’m going to the [inaudible], you got the keys?” John replies, “Yeah.” Peter and John leaves Panera
