Nature of Logic and Perception Paper
Rationality is being governed by final causes. In this paper the writer will attempt to explain the nature of logic as it relates to critical thinking, identifying an instance in his or her life where perception of reality within a situation was far from the actual reality. In realizing the truth of the situation, the writer will discuss what he or she thought was going on within the situation, whether there was a difference, what happened, and describe what he or she learned in order to make a change in his or her critical thinking process.
Working in a non-profit organization, the writer became very knowledgeable about the nature of the business in a very short time. Being in a position to see the ins and outs of the organization, the writer realized the importance of achieving his or her goal of becoming the leader of a non-profit organization. An organization that specialized in accessing the barriers of at-risk youths transitioning back into the life of higher education, self-awareness, job readiness skills, financial literacy and an abundance of faith through faith-based structures.
Being an employee of an organization that focused on the same mission and values as the one he or she was interested in creating, he or she began to improve his or her work ethics in an attempt to be promoted within the company. Applying for several positions within the organization allowed the writer to showcase the skills and abilities that he or she had to offer. In the beginning of his or her tenure within the organization, the writer became very familiar with the process of the organization and soon realized after being an employee of the organization he or she was going to have to “play” by the rules of the game. Forming an alliance within the company was not an option he or she set out to achieve. Previously over the years, you were promoted based on the relationship that you had with a member of the “Core” group.
After being passed up for three different promotions within the organization, the writer scheduled a meeting with the President and Chief Executive Officer of the organization to discuss the lack of promotions that were being extended that matched his or her skill set. The writer felt as though, he or she was not being selected for an interview process of the positions previously applied for, mainly due to the fact, that he or she had not formed an alliance with anyone. Knowing that the positions were available, and he or she was not being considered offended the writer, who expressed dissatisfaction to the President of the organization.
Reality of the circumstances was the President of the organization had the obligation, not only to the employees that he or she has employed; but to the consumers that the organization serviced. Speaking with the President, the writer learned that the root of the problem, started with the management skills of the President. He allowed everything that went on within the organization to go on. In order for the writer to advance within the organization, the writer then had to play the game that the President and the “Core” group of the organization were playing. The writer began to document conversations and create files that pertained to the policy and procedures of the organization seeking a different result.
In conclusion, the writer was not selected for the position that he or she was seeking; but more importantly, the writer did not compromise his or her integrity. He or she decided to continue to apply to positions that he or she qualified and believed in the faithfulness of keeping the faith and believing that perseverance is the key to any accomplishments achieved. Standing up for what you believe in, and demanding the respect of others, is something that will have to continue throughout every day of your life. Never give up and let others determine your worth, your worth is and will always be what you set out to accomplish. Having self-respect for yourself and never allowing anyone to compromise your beliefs will be your reward for life.

...Logic Main article: Logic Logic is the study of the principles of correct reasoning. Arguments use either deductive reasoning or inductive reasoning. Deductive reasoning is when, given certain statements (called premises), other statements (called conclusions) are unavoidably implied. Rules of inferences from premises include the most popular method, modus ponens, where given “A” and “If A then B”, then “B” must be concluded. A common convention for a deductive argument is the syllogism. An argument is termed valid if its conclusion does indeed follow from its premises, whether the premises are true or not, while an argument is sound if its conclusion follows from premises that are true. Propositional logic uses premises that are propositions, which are declarations that are either true or false, while predicate logic uses more complex premises called formulae that contain variables. These can be assigned values or can be quantified as to when they apply with the universal quantifier (always apply) or the existential quantifier (applies at least once). Inductive reasoning makes conclusions or generalizations based on probabilistic reasoning. For example, if “90% of humans are right-handed” and “Joe is human” then “Joe is probably right-handed”. Fields in logic include mathematical logic (formal symbolic logic) and philosophical logic. Metaphysics Main article: Metaphysics Metaphysics is the study of the most general features of reality, such as existence, time, the relationship...

Integration

...Integration Paper Thiago DeSouza Psychology and the Bible Liberty University Abstract Integration for many years has been a topic of discussion between psychologists and Christian leaders. The debate between the two disciplines has been whether or not the two can coexist together or if the two disciplines should never merge. Epistemology, cosmology, and philosophical anthropology lays down the foundation for integration. Both disciplines seek to understand human behavior and both seek to fix what appears to be broken within humanity. Both disciplines seek for truth. Psychology seeks for truth through science and what has been observed, whereas the source for truth for Christianity is found in God through His Words and His Works. The two may not contradict. There are several models of integration and they look to explain what the relationship between psychology and Christianity ought to be. The Allies model, which is discussed in more depth, holds the view that truth is found in God’s Words and Works and that God is sovereign over all things. Integration Paper The integration of psychology and Christianity has been a topic of discussion for many years and will be for many more years to come. It is important that this discussion is not put aside but rather be openly discussed among members from both disciplines. There are many models within integration and they all offer their own perspectives on the relationship between psychology and Christianity. One is not necessarily...

Philosophy

...Philosophy Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Discussed in this paper will be the most prominent individuals in each time period and their ideas, starting with the “Pre-Socratic” philosophers and ending in the era of post modernism. The time period in ancient Greece between the end of the seventh century B.C. and the middle of the fourth century B.C. is what is known as the “Pre-Socratic Era”. The thinkers known as the “Pre-Socratic Philosophers” used the four basic elements (water, earth, fire, and air) as their foundations for their ideas. Thales and most of the other Pre-Socratic philosophers limited themselves mostly to inquiring the nature of existence, being, and the world. They were mostly Materialists, believing that all things are composed of material and nothing else, and were mainly concerned with trying to establish the single underlying substance of which the world is made up. They used this idea of “Monism” without resorting to supernatural or mythological explanations. To these men even the commonest of phenomena like lightning, water freezing to ice, and natural disasters would have appeared miraculous. Empedocles, first of the pluralists, who proposed that reality, is composed of an irreducible plurality of elements. He also documented the first theory of evolution. Democritus developed the extremely influential idea of Atomism (that all of reality is actually...

Nature of Thinking

...The Nature of Thinking Jennifer Sumen PHL/251 August 10, 2015 Dr. Michael Newman Myers The Nature of Thinking The nature of thought plays a huge role in an individual’s everyday life, weather it is their home life or professional life. As human beings we are faced with various situations that will require thinking. It is human nature for our thought process to be influenced by perception and personal barriers. This paper will discuss why as humans our thought process is so unique, how perception can completely change a situation in our thoughts and how personal barriers can also influence your thinking. According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary thinking is “the action of using your mind to produce ideas, decisions, memories etc.: the activity of thinking about something: opinion or judgement”. (Merriam-Webster) Human thinking is very unique because of the fact that we as humans have feelings. Our thoughts and feelings are often intertwined and can have a huge influence on each other. People express their thoughts in many different ways. A few examples are: verbally, written form which can be through a letter, text message writing a song or poetry an email, thoughts can even be expressed physically through facial expressions and hand gestures. Why is it we as humans do this, well because without communicating our thoughts we cannot continue to learn and grow For example, if a person had a thought that the sky was purple and the clouds were pink but they never...

Beyond Proof and Necessity: Logically Establishing God’s Existence

...microphone ever produced would be able hear the sound of God, and no camera ever invented possessed the ability to record the likeness of God--yet somehow it became inherently possible that over three billion of the earths’ population today believe in God—whether He be called Jehovah, Yahweh, Allah or the Great I Am. What remains is the time immortal question which mankind has been left to reason: Is it necessary to prove His existence? This paper serves to clearly answer the question, using logic, reason and evidence to support, that it is not necessary to prove the existence of God. Demonstrated within this paper will be the arguments of proof, or the proof of God, that is, an address of the cosmological, ontological and origination by design theories of existence, with centering on the ontological theory. Further contained will be assessments of existence as is inherently essential to evaluate the matter of necessary existence. An address of evidence, as applied to both the proof and existence of God will conclude this paper, save a summation at the conclusion. Before we address the topic question at hand, we must first ask ourselves—what, or who, is God? There are countless possible answers to this question, and no one answer can be definitively the standard...

Famous Thinkers

...approaching issues. The two famous thinkers this paper will examine—Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), and Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) each used the creative process to change the way people viewed the issues of the day. They each made specific contributions to society during difficult social times. The subject of this paper will examine the specific problems or ideas both of these famous thinkers sought to solve, and the solutions they came up with for implementation. The ideas and solutions met with interference from people opposing the change, and many of the solutions were is a constant state of refinement, but their individual solutions all met the test of logic, enabling them to overcome the difficulties and opposition to resolutions. The thinking of these two men went a long way in changing the way people thought, and shaped the outcome of their individual issues for the better. Russell for analytical philosophy based in realism, and King in defeating the injustice of segregation and inequality. Both men looked at the problem in different ways to find different perspectives that no one else had visited. They both were able to visualize that produced ideas and solutions to issues. They both had the patience to refine their ideas and solutions to overcome opposition. Contribution to Society Bertrand Russell made many different contributions to society including establishing the basis of contemporary mathematical logic, the founder of analytical philosophy, and providing...

Critical Thinking Application Paper

...Critical Thinking Application Paper Critical Thinking Application Paper University of Phoenix April Armstrong Instructor Karen Amabile Date August 3, 2009 Critical Thinking Application Paper Critical thinking can be described as identifying and challenging assumptions and exploring and imagining alternatives. The idea of not having critical thinking would be to believe everyone no matter what they are saying. Everyone would believe all the commercials on television, any politicians who are giving his or her election speeches, all reading material that is read, and it must be correct if certain organizations are doing it. Critical thinking has eight main components that are known as perception, assumptions, emotion, language, argument, fallacy, logic, and problem solving. Perception is the how an individual receives or explains our personal experiences and how it is received interprets what that person thinks about a certain situation. This can vary from individual to individual. Assumptions in critical thinking are ideas about human nature that are evidence without proof of argument. The assumptions are what people believe to be true and make a person feel comfortable in his or her beliefs. Presenting the choice between two possibilities is an important feature of thinking critically. Emotion is another component in critical thinking that should not be involved even though it is always there. Emotions help individuals to understand all the issues...

Slice of Life

...Slice of Life A Synthesis Paper on Philosophy and Logic Jonn Denzel V. Ramos BSGE-1E Does God exist? How to build an attractive city? Does life is real or just an imagination? An average person fails to answer these questions objectively, but philosophers have this will on solving these problems. Philosophy and logic are the fundamentals in search for meaning. Philosophers have these skill set which makes them think different from others, which leads and guides them to real and unbiased answer, it is a slice of life where they embrace every single moment they put up time and effort in their search for answer. Long time ago, Ancient Greeks invented philosophy as the way of thinking and asking questions about all things through its ultimate causes. Pre-Socratic Pythagoras coined the word philosophia which means “love of wisdom” or people who are faithful to wisdom as St. Thomas Aquinas called as wise man. Philosophy began to spread throughout the rest of the world, as the knowledge and discipline that engages and sharpens our reasons. There are three components of philosophy, the material object, formal object and natural scope. The material object refers to the subject being observed and finding the root cause on how it exist is its formal object. The natural scope is simply defined as natural reason which philosophers use in search for explanations. Ordinary and profound are two types of knowledge in philosophy. Ordinary knowledge is the foundation or the simplest form...

...of the Beholder Abstract The literature on Activity Based Costing (ABC) tends to define the ‘success’ of an ABC system in relation to the decision-making and strategy formulating opportunities it provides based on the ‘logic’ or technical attributes of ABC (Shields, 1995; Malmi, 1997). This paper argues that there is a logic of ABC and tries to identify and illustrate how people relate to, misunderstand and still ‘appropriate’ this logic and start “talking accounting”. This paper shows that the ABC system implemented in this organisation did indeed provide information for decision-making and did to some extent support the logic of ABC. The paper also shows how this knowledge was emergent, the logic was articulated, but not fully understood and it was only when the system was implemented that many attributes of the system were recognised and, in some cases misunderstood. The paper argues that the ‘success’ of this particular ABC system was dependent on the organisational context, and the changing context as well as the logic. This is reflected in the change in attitudes, awareness and understanding of costs in the department where it was implemented. Key words: Activity Based Costing, financial services, and organisational change. 2 Introduction This paper examines the introduction of an Activity Based Costing (ABC) system in a UK Clearing Bank. The development and implementation of the ABC system is traced...

What Is Philosophy

...Part 1 1. What is Philosophy? Quite literally, the term "philosophy" means, "love of wisdom." In a broad sense, philosophy is an activity people undertake when they seek to understand fundamental truths about themselves, the world in which they live, and their relationships to the world and to each other. As an academic discipline philosophy is much the same. Those who study philosophy are perpetually engaged in asking, answering, and arguing for their answers to life’s most basic questions. To make such a pursuit more systematic academic philosophy is traditionally divided into major areas of study. Source: http://philosophy.fsu.edu/content/view/full/36588 2. What are the benefits of Studying Philosophy? Studying philosophy improves reasoning and critical skills. Skills gained by philosophy majors are useful in almost any career. * The ability to think logically * The ability to analyze and solve problems * The ability to assess proposed solutions * The ability to write and speak clearly, attending to details Students learn about questions. How to ask good questions and distinguish the worthwhile from the worthless questions. How to divide, prioritize, and simplify questions. Differing Definitions of Critical Thought

...Running head: Differing definitions of critical thought Differing Definitions of Critical Thought Victor M. Fraser Capitol College Abstract This paper attempts to compare and contrast the differing definitions of critical thinking as defined by various writers on different publications. It appears that no matter how critical thinking is defined, the same components are standard, and the conclusions are somewhat similar and hold true. A true definition of critical thinking is by no feat an easy task. It is a complex and controversial notion difficult to define and also to study. Many definitions have been proposed by several experts. One high profile definition states, “We understand critical thinking to be purposeful, self regulatory judgment which results in interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference, as well as explanation of the evidential, conceptual, methodological, criteriological, or contextual considerations upon which that judgment is based ….. The ideal critical thinker is habitually inquisitive, well informed, trustful of reason, open minded, flexible, fair minded in evaluation, honest in facing personal biases, prudent in making judgments, willing to reconsider and persistent in seeking results which are as precise as the subject and the circumstances of inquiry permit.” (Facione, 1990a, p.3). As can be seen from the all encompassing definition a lot goes into determining the...

...service evaluation Abstract This paper examines an interesting research question: how does a service failure that happen to a stranger customer influence an observing customer's service evaluation? Drawing on the defensive attribution theory and regulatory focus theory, we argue that an observing customer will attribute more (vs. less) blame to the company if the customer involved in the undesirable incident is personally similar (vs. not similar) to him/her. These attributions, in turn, will influence the observing customers to form a negative evaluation on service quality of the company. More importantly, a prevention-focused tendency will intensify the negative impact of personal similarity on service evaluation. Results from two experiments confirmed the hypotheses. Designing, Administering, and Utilizing an Employee Attitude Survey Abstract Employee attitudes and the inclusion of their opinions and suggestions are most important in today’s global and competitive work environment. In the American businessenvironment, we are dealing with many different generations, each having diverse wants, needs, goals, and aspirations. The more that management knows about their employee’s feelings, theeasier it is to manage their behavior to help them grow and the economy will prosper. Logic andresearch seems to agree that front- line employees are in the best position to assess theorganization’s actions, problems, and proposed solutions. This paper presents a very practical approach...
