The Nature or Nature (2014) video explains the debate of nature vs. nurture and how it is reflected on social class. The clip describes how when looked upon studies of twins both genetics and environment effects a person’s behavior and personality. The professor in the video suggests that “children in poverty, their home environment was the most important factor, their genes had no role in shaping them as a person” (McDaid, 2014). Furthermore, he explains that the lower the individual is on a social class ranking, the less their genes are communicated through their behavior and personality. He states that the more money a person attains, the more they are able to “express them”. The debate of nature vs. nurture has been discussed over many years between social scientist and how it has to do with process of socialization. The textbook states, “…identical twins brought up in a dramatically different social environments score quite differently on intelligence tests- a finding that supports the impact of socialization on human development” (Schaefer, 2009, p.68).Similarly, in the video the professor states that when looking at the results of IQ test of twin, if a child was raised in poverty there scores were likely to be different because of the environment they were raised in. He concludes by proposing, “If a child is raised in a rough environment, they will not be able to express their genetic tendencies, until individual raised in a more comfortable financial environmental setting” (McDaid, 2014).
