The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass expresses various rhetorical strategies that the author, Frederick Douglass, employs in order to establish his argument regarding slavery. One such strategy, categorization, is used to categorize all slaveholders into an antagonistic role. Even though Douglass experienced moderately just slaveholders during his captivity in Maryland, Douglass' rhetoric allow readers to classify slaveholders as the enemy despite their infrequent generosity. For example, one of Douglass' masters forces Douglass to earn nine dollars a week through the shipbuilding trade; subsequently, Douglass is allotted little compensation. He states, " . . . I became quite restless. I could see no reason why I should, at the end of each week, pour the reward of my toil into the purse of my master."; furthermore, he states, "He was satisfied with nothing but the last cent." Thus, Douglass grows to detest his master; moreover, readers of The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass identify with Douglass' categorization. Frederick Douglass utilizes description as a tool to convey his rhetoric in addition to his use of categorization. In various instances throughout his narrative, Douglass depicts specific examples of the inhumane brutality associated with slavery. When Douglass was a young adolescent, two rampaging oxen narrowly miss gouging him and eventually become the cause for Douglass' master to whip him ferociously. Additionally, description is used to illustrate a time when Douglass grievously walked seven miles. Nearly collapsing of heat stroke, Douglass sought protection from his abusive master. Many of the strongest friendships are born from the worst of hardships; likewise, Douglass' captivity produced friends with whom Douglass felt a painful disconnection to once he decided to achieve his freedom. In two instances, Douglass considers tolerating the continual destitution of slavery so that he may be able to stay in proximity to his friends. Prior to his departure from Baltimore, Douglass states, "I had a number of warm-hearted friends in Baltimore,- friends that I loved as I did my life,- and the thought of being separated from them was painful beyond expression." Douglass' inner turmoil serves as another rhetorical strategy that enlightens the readers to the hardships of slavery through the strong emotional bonds that it creates. Douglass' autobiography is essentially a hybrid bildungsroman, a story of growth from infancy to adulthood. From his early years with Mr. and Mrs. Auld, to his later years with the wicked Covey, Douglass narrates his life with the growth of his emotions at the forefront. As a rhetorical strategy, it deeply connects readers to his thought process and decision making capabilities. Thus, readers are able to understand how Douglass was able to overcome his environment and progress towards his freedom. The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is full of rhetorical strategies that convey Douglass' opposition to slavery; however, Douglass employs appeals to logic as his most effective rhetorical strategy. Throughout his narrative, he alludes to the fact that it is illogical for him, a human being, to endure the suffering of captivity. His education strengthens this strategy as his narrative progresses to the point when his logic overcomes his emotions; consequently, it(his logic) forces him to flee to the northern states. As citizens who deem slavery an illogical practice, modern-day society is able to easily identify with Douglass' rhetoric; thus, instilling a complete understanding of his intentions for writing his narrative: persuade others that slavery is immoral and illogical.

The Uses and Limitations of Reason in Gaining Knowledge.

...attempt to explore one main question – ' how?' and in order to simplify, I shall attempt to put forth this exploration in the area of economics. When we draw a graph on the cartesian plan explaining rational human behaviour, with ceteris paribus, we suppose the unreal to be able to understand the real. Beyond the irony of it all, the knower is faced with a dilemma at heart – To what extent is this actually true? The presence of ideal and/or constant conditions and rational actors as a presupposition to explainations in economic theory from the very core – such as demand and supply- are clear examples of basing valid theories on certain assumptions. The arguments, the deductions and all inferences made from that theory– whether it is about equilibrium or social surplus – are valid. But a keen knower is bound to question the veracity of the core premise in place to know whether reason in economics is in confluence with truth or divorced from it! To examine the premise of the rational human, I am intrigued into exploring how we firstly define, and then generalize rational behaviour. Herein comes a roadblock – What is the universal yardstick for rational behaviour? Is there something like a metre, a gram or a second? Whereas the former is a complex psychological function, the latter is just postulation for convenience made by physical scientists. However, knowing that the object of study in economics is not an inanimate physicality but a...

Biomimicry

...As a result of 3.8 billion years of “research and development” (evolution), nature provides a set of design blueprints that may be used to guide us to create elegant, sustainable, and innovative designs for human technologies (Benyus 1997). The field of biomimicry analyzes nature‟s best ideas and adapts them for human use (Benyus 1997). The built environment could benefit from the integration of a discipline such as biomimicry into the design process. In 1997, Janine Benyus published a revolutionary book called Biomimicry. The word Biomimicry is derived from two Greek words: bios which means life, and mimesis which means to imitate. In her treatise, Benyus describes “a new science that studies nature‟s models and then imitates or takes inspiration from these designs and processes to solve human problems, e.g. a solar cell inspired by a leaf.” (Benyus, 1997). t is said that the need is the mother of invention . People have been inventing whole of their lives to accommodate their requirements. This paper will discuss how men approached to some of their development and what roles did nature and some of its designs play to inspire inventors. The paper will go farther than this to look up at a new scientific method that imitate natural superior system to improve humans' life. It will concentrate mainly on the advancements of communication systems due to researches on this science which is called Biomimetics. Finally it will try to identify any existing similar natural and human-made...

Levittown: Visionary Urban Design or Just Urban Sprawl?

...Levittown: Visionary Urban Design or just Urban Sprawl? Gail A Bigelow April 23, 2006 University of Central Florida Levittown: Visionary Urban Design or just Urban Sprawl? Levittown isn’t a visionary product of high design, there weren’t any major architects to give it pizzazz yet it endures today, by sheer force of will, to be the working stiff’s utopia, his escape from the inner city, the place where he could get away from the noise and dust of the city, a place that was affordable, where he could be king of his own single-family detached castle, he could enhance his quality of life and be just far enough away, but not too far… After World War II the returning veterans demands for housing became more insatiable, it was a right, given what they had been through. Returning veterans were living in attics, basements and Quonset huts or sharing housing with others in the same boat. The young men and women were ready to get back to a normal life – get married and have families and that meant finding a place of their own. The houses were their reward. A single-family house in the suburbs, fully equipped with the best appliances, became a patriotic mission. Many were looking for something new and different than what they had grown up with, they wanted to get out of the inner cities. They knew they’d have to work in those cities, but they didn’t have to live there or raise a family there. During the...
