No Child Left Behind Cons

The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) has been a controversial topic from its start. There are passionate debaters on both sides of the arguments, each with their own validity behind their stance. Last week was all about focusing on the pros NCLB brings to the table, now lets dive into the cons.
What are the negative affects? According to "Educational Research Newsletter And Webinars" (2006), " By imposing standards on students’ minds we are, in effect, depriving them of their fundamental intellectual freedom by applying one standard set of knowledge. Standardized tests oversimplify knowledge and do not test higher-order thinking skills. State standards are externally imposed on local teachers.” and “One-size-fits-all standards either dumb down instruction to the lowest common denominator or condemn low-ability students to frequent failure” (Standard-based assessments). The point this brings up is a strong one. How can the educational system except to successfully teach all students using the exact same model when it’s a well-known fact everyone has vastly different learning styles. Metaphorically, trying to shove the square through the circle whole is going to always lead to failure. The idea of having a set standard that all children should know is obviously very important, but setting down a specific guideline all kids are supposed to form to via an annual standardized test doesn’t work. The "Nclb Stories From The Front Lines" (N.D.) website was told by Silvia Ramos-Higueros from El Monte Elementary School Teachers Association “I start every day at school saddened that I have to spend the whole day of teaching pulling workbooks and assessing my students who are 6 year olds.” “No time for art, no time for P.E., no time for them to use their imagination.” At a young age, children need to be able to express themselves; they need to be able to find out if they are good at art, or if they are a good runner in P.E. These elective activities can help build confidence in children. If they are bombarded with constant classroom text books and maintaining a high standard all the time, it will take the fun out of school at an early age. The NCLB Act also says if a school fails to bring a child up to speed on the standardized test, and consecutively fails to teach that child properly, then the school itself must fund the cost to move the child to a more successful school or pay for tutoring. From a parents standpoint this sounds pretty good. After all, if any school or business fails to deliver what was expected or promised, they should absolutely be held responsible for it. The issue is the schools and teachers are basically given a very narrow path to guide their students on based off the standardized tests. Without the freedom to utilize more personalized subjects, assignments and teaching styles, the schools and teachers are automatically set up for guaranteed failure in regards to certain children. Forcing the schools themselves to fund the afterschool tutoring and possible relocation of failing kids also has potential to put all the children in that school at risk. Most schools work on a relatively tight budget, so now forcing them to fork over more money has potential to result in the cutting of other programs which help children grow in other ways like music, art, and sports. So it comes to a point of asking the question, is it worth spending the extra money on one if it negatively affects the many?
Conclusion
The potential NCLB brings is a great one. Intentions behind the act are pure and really are there to look out for the benefit of the children and Americas future. Unfortunately good intentions also have the potential to deliver not so good results and those lie in the narrow boundaries of the standardized tests and putting too much blame on schools and teachers for attempting to uphold a system that doesn’t appeal to everyone.

...Debate Summary Amanda Missick, Karla Castillo, Kimberly Archuleta, and Kimberly Arzate BCOM 275 April 2, 2015 John Kungis Debate Summary Throughout the debate we chose to discuss the Chris Kyle murder case where Eddie Routh was convicted for the brutal murder of Chris Kyle, former Navy Seal, and his comrade Chad Littlefield. As the debate summary we decided to go with the pro side of the argument, which includes; Eddie Routh's history of mental disorders, how he fled the scene, and the sentence given to him for his murder charge. Not only did this topic make us have different opinions amongst each other, but made us open our minds to different views. Even though as a team we had our disagreements and different believes on the topic, we came together for the final decision of the debate. We believed that the murder trial of Chris Kyle was justly sentenced. Even though Eddie was facing a low point in his life we believe his alcohol abuse, violent behavior and strange conduct were contributing factors that led to his mental state. Living in a city with one of the biggest military bases in the country, we all in different ways are related to military personnel. Some of us personally know veterans with PTSD. It was discussed during our meetings that it normally takes more than a shooting range to trigger someone to relive those experiences that only veterans have experienced. We are devastated that this incident turned out the way it did, ending the life of not only the...

Personal Literacy

...DJ Nolff Literacy Of Life 9/24/12 The literacy of life in my opinion the most important story for one to pass on to others, not jus tin terms of reading or to draw conclusions to deeper and more detailed meaning, but to learn and understand about the lessons we encounter in everyday life that we at most times look past or ignore. I can see a time in my life living in a small town called Hastings Michigan when I was forced to do something that I would have never imagined doing. I was there my entire life and my parents were going to, with such short notice tell me we were moving to Minnesota. I loved where I Lived, I loved my friends and family being so close, sports, everything where I currently was had enough to offer for me. When they told me this I felt like everything I ever cared for was being taken away from me and that things were falling apart right before my eyes. There were many clues that my parents had said weeks and months prior to the news but I was so caught up in my own little world, too young and immature to even have noticed them. They would ask me little questions all the time like how would I feel about being far away from home? Do I like the Vikings? All kinds of questions relating to Minnesota but I never even thought more about them, I thought they were just questions. I was put in a situation to say goodbye to all the people who ever helped me make it as far as I was at the time. Friends, family, teachers, coaches everybody. I was so......

Chili Pepper and Eucalyptusoil as a Cockroach Killer

...DISPLAY BOARD ABSTRACT Cockroaches are a constant threat to humans; they spread diseases and are unsanitary. This cockroach problem is commonly addressed through the use of toxic pesticides, but the unfortunate truth is that these pesticides can also be harmful to humans and the environment. The researchers conducted a study to create a toxic-free cockroach killer using Eucalyptus Oil and Chili Peppers as ingredients. The researchers determined the most effective concentration of ingredients by performing a Preliminary Test. From the test they discovered that the concentration with the higher amount of Eucalyptus oil is most effective in killing cockroaches. They proceeded to conduct further experiments to compare the Formulated Cockroach Killer from a known Commercial Pesticide. 5 trials were performed, 10 cockroaches were tested with the Commercial Pesticide and another 10 for the Formulated Cockroach Killer. The Commercial Pesticide killed a higher quantity of cockroaches than the Formulated one. Data were collected and a T-test was performed. The T-test proved that the difference is statistically significant. Although the Commercial Pesticide was more effective, the Formulated Cockroach Killer was still able to kill cockroaches without the use of Toxic ingredients. Background Of The Study Cockroaches have adapted to survive in many environments. Once cockroaches invade your home, they can expose you to several kinds of diseases. The use of toxic pesticides to manage......

Basic Statsanalysis

...Complaints Both the Pareto chart and frequency chart below show that close to 80% of the cumulative complaints can be accredited to waiting too long in line, food being cold and no vegetarian food choices being present. By addressing these three issues, Ted’s Dogs and Burgers will receive higher customer satisfaction which will ultimately lead to higher profits. First and foremost, the current workers need to be as organized as possible in order to tackle the biggest complaint of long wait times. Each worker should have a specific role in the order process and stick to their position. Instead of having three or four workers running around trying to fulfill orders, each worker should be assigned to a specific station. For example, one worker can take orders and handle payment, another worker can assemble hot dogs, another worker can run the burgers while a fourth worker can handle compiling the order and serving drinks. This will allow the workers to become efficient and quickly assemble orders. Each worker can also prepare for customer rushes (half time, before the games begin and shortly after the games are finished) by prepping their work spaces. Hot dog buns can be laid out on plates, napkins can be arranged, cheese can be laid on burger buns and cups can be filled with ice to further speed up the order process. If additional workers were able to be hired and there was money available to spend on additional equipment, there are a couple more options for......

The Frankllins Tale

...THE FRANKLIN'S PROLOGUE These ancient gentle Bretons, in their days, Of divers high adventures made great lays And rhymed them in their primal Breton tongue, The which lays to their instruments they sung, Or else recited them where joy might be; And one of them have I in memory, Which I shall gladly tell you, as I can. But, sirs, because I am an ignorant man, At my beginning must I first beseech You will excuse me for my vulgar speech; I never studied rhetoric, that's certain; That which I say, it must be bare and plain. I never slept on Mount Parnassus, no, Nor studied Marcus Tullius Cicero. Colours I know not, there's no doubt indeed, Save colours such as grow within the mead, Or such as men achieve with dye or paint. Colours of rhetoric I find but quaint; My spirit doesn't feel the beauty there. But if you wish, my story you shall hear." THE FRANKLIN'S TALE In old Armorica, now Brittany, There was a knight that loved and strove, did he To serve a lady in the highest wise; And many a labour, many a great emprise He wrought for her, or ever she was won. For she was of the fairest under sun, And therewithal come of so high kindred That scarcely could this noble knight, for dread, Tell her his woe, his pain, and his distress. But at the last she, for his worthiness, And specially for his meek obedience, Had so much pity that, in consequence, She secretly was come to his accord To take him for her husband and......

My hobbies are dance, drill team, theatre, cooking, event planning, making that money, painting/designing, and weightlifting. My fav food would have to be my grandma’s mole or arroz con pollo. That’s why I’m fat now- you can’t say no to a Hispanic grandma who wants to constantly feed you. My favorite TV show would be nothing because im too busy to watch TV. I do have a favorite movie however, which is the movie Selma, which was about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights movement. Memb

No Child Left Behind

...No Child Left Behind Luisa Villalba EDU623 Professor Smith November 5, 2012 The No Child Left Behind act was put in place to help better educate America’s youth. The NCLB act shines light on our education system, and how our focus needs to be on educating our children. Explore what the NCLB act was intended to do its pros and cons, and President Obama’s fight to reform NCLB. In 2001 President George W. Bush proposed a federal law known as The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The law supports several federal programs intended to improve U.S. schools by raising the standards of responsibility for school districts, schools, and states. The law also allows room for parents to choose the schools they would like their children to attend. The NCLB act concentrates on increasing reading, and math sores nationwide. The objective of the NCLB act is that all students meet state guidelines set in hopes of students reaching their full academic potential. Funding for the NCLB act is divided into quite a few sections, or titles. For example * Title I, Part A focuses on obtaining resources for disadvantaged students. This is done by providing funding to bring qualified educators into the classroom. * Title 1, Part D ensures that children who are found to delinquent, or neglected receive quality education while in detention centers, or institutions. * Title II, Part A concentrates on bettering the quality of teachers, and principals. This......
