Neighborhood News When one think of a neighborhood where residents live it is usually positive, clean, and healthy. In the Neighborhood water is usually safe to drink, and living conditions are healthy. This paper will discuss health issues in the Neighborhood, aquatic creatures found in the lake, and contaminated water supply from pollutants supplied to the residents who live in the Neighborhood. Information communicated to the mayor mentioned that the quality of the water in the lake has pollutants in it and that the lake may not be useable for future generations. Another health concern the Neighborhood residents are worried about secondhand smoking, and there is speak of banning smoking in public areas. The Neighborhood community Center offer classes to those trying to quit smoking.
According to the “Neighborhood News” the officials of the Neighborhood are worried about the concentration of pollutants in the community lake. Many of the residents are worried and concerned that the lake would not be useable for future generations. The mayor voiced his concerns about the future use of the lake but had a more urgent situation other than the water quality of the lake. The mayor informed the residents that he is taking measures to clean up the lake but he refused to address the media regarding the pollution status about the lake.
This is a community health issue because the Neighborhood water source is supplied by the lake and the water may be contaminated from the pollutants in the lake. The entire community is at risk because the Neighborhood water supply comes from the lake. This is an isolated community health issue because the water from the lake supplies the residents in the Neighborhood. The mayor could have used the media to help inform the residents about the condition of the lake and the potential health hazard to the water supply. The residents did not view the lake condition as a health concern and focused their energy on the annual fund raiser event (Run for the Fish).
The Neighborhood officials neglected to investigate the cause of the different aquatic creatures that came from the lake. The officials noticed the increased in the construction of production plants in the area and some suggested that the plants could be contributing to the rise in the pollutants in the lake.
Another health issue mentioned in the community “Smoking breaks a thing of the past?” relates to public health because secondhand smoke from smokers has a direct effect on their health and nonsmokers health (CDC, 2011). The decision for large companies to ban smoke breaks will create a healthier environment in which the employees work. The Neighborhood Community Center offer classes to assist smokers in alternative methods to decrease or cease from smoking. Employers have jumped on the band wagon in promoting decrease and cessation of smoking by prohibiting smoking while at work. Nonsmokers have no problems accepting the no smoke break policy. They welcomed it without objections. Once they understand the discomfort and risk that they impose on their coworkers, they will attempt to adhere to the policy. Nonsmokers exposed to smoke in the workplace are at risk for health issues as well as those who smokes. Speak of banning smoking in the workplace and other public establishment is a positive health trend for those involved parties. Smoking bans help to save lives and reduce the effect of secondhand smoke in the public.
In conclusion, there was an increased concentration of pollutants in the lake water supply and different aquatic creatures were identified in the lake. Because of the contaminated pollutants in the lake water this imposes a health risk for the residents in the Neighborhood as well as secondhand smoking. Secondhand smoking in public places potentiates the risk for health concerns.

...Essay 1- Comparison of the neighbors In Robert Frost’s poems “Mending Wall” and “The Ax-Helve,” the characters demonstrate the comparable differences of being each other’s neighbor. Frost uses these poems to tell us that we shouldn’t determine one’s worth on first interaction. Although Frost suggests that we should share amongst our neighbors yet there should be a boundary. In both poems, one neighbor is willing to be the open and “good neighbor” while in contrast, the other wants excludes himself. (Frost, Mending Wall) I “Mending wall” the neighbors like having a fence between the two. The fence symbolizes many different things, but ultimately it symbolizes a space or boundary between the two. This is completely different from “The Ax Helve” where the French neighbor wants the other neighbor over. So while they are very much different they are also very much similar. (Frost, Ax helve) The similarities come into play when you look into the underlying meaning and triggers of each poem, in both the neighbors have this unspoken suspicion of the other neighbor. For example in “Mending Wall” the narrator did not see the need for the wall between them which was there to create an alienation and a similar alienation was created by the cultural differences between the two neighbors in “The Ax Helve.” In the “Mending Wall” the narrator and the neighbor pretty much agree on the benefit of the wall, and in the end they both repair the wall, but the narrator did question the...

Tea with the Birds

...society are prejudice and judgmental towards the ‘unknown’ person, and we will rather observe and assume things about each other than getting to know one another. This is also the case for the main character and her neighbors in Joanne Harris novel ‘Tea with the birds’ from 2001. The narrator lives in a flat in Mortimer Street. The narrator describes Mortimer Street as being “busy without being comfortable; crowded without being friendly” .Mortimer street has a sense of coldness around it, and no-one really knows their neighbors even though they “live like birds in cages” . The coldness suits the narrator, because she enjoys the solitude, privacy and silence of her own flat. This has aroused her neighbors’ curiosity and suspicious towards her, because as she describes “I’m a completely different race from my neighbors” . Both the narrator and her neighbors consider her as an outsider, but this does not bother the narrator. Her neighbors consider her as being snobby cause of her reluctance to speak with them. Therefore her neighbors observe her and presume, she is a student nurse and she doesn’t bother to correct them. Mortimer Street is a reflection on the narrators own personality. She is very introverted and doesn’t have an interest in getting to know her neighbors. The narrator lives her lonely life, until the day when Mr. Juzo Tamaoki moves in the apartment opposite to hers. “Another foreigner said the Mortimer Street grapevine, with barely concealed disapproval” . This once...

According to the book “ The Art of Thinking” by Ryan Ruggiero, the greatest difficulty people have in thinking about problems and issues is evaluating the various solutions and choosing the best one. Growing up most of us desire to have a family and a nice comfortable home. Taking the first step to buying a house is a difficult decision and most couples goes through a lot of planning when preparing to make this commitment. Aside from financial support, searching for the right house takes a lot a lot of time. When the house is found that’s desired the next step is to investigate the neighborhood. Many times this step is omitted but it may be the most important step to making a final decision because the neighborhood as a whole is the place which people invest, raise their children and live for many years to come. Making sure to cover all needed steps to buying a home is most crucial for peace and happiness to be united inside and outside the home. New Worry for Home Buyers: a Party House Next Door

...biggest. They may be new construction where a smaller structure once stood, or an extensively renovated home with cheery paint in shades of yellow or blue. But then the telltale signs appear, including an electronic touch pad on the door that makes it easy for people to get in without a key. The ads on HomeAway or Airbnb eventually confirm it: A party house has come to the neighborhood. Some neighbors have warmed in recent years to travelers dragging suitcases through their residential neighborhoods, and they are happy that the visitors spread their money around. But when profit-seeking entrepreneurs furnish homes they do not live in to make them attractive to big groups and then rent out those houses as much as possible, parties and noise are nearly inevitable. The Lottery

...seemingly useless bits of information introduced in the beginning of the story begin to build the suspense centered on a violent ritual which becomes clear near the end of the story. The ritual held in this small town and other surrounding towns is an annual event that is taken in stride by all the town folk but leaves the reader wondering how such a violent event came to be and how it could continue through the years. Could people actually believe that by sacrificing one of their own that the corn crops would be plentiful the near year? The author, Jackson, takes you to a particular day which annually affects this small town with a population of 300. Initially, the author introduces the villagers one by one and she writes of how the neighbors gather in the town square and begin conversing with one another about various details of their, what appears to be typical, day to day activities. The men talk about crops, the children are still celebrating the summer break from school and the women begin to gossip. Life appears to be what one would expect in a small town as the author describes how the boys in the village begin gathering rocks in an almost innocent manner. As the story progresses, it begins to focus more on the annual lottery which has been tradition in the town throughout the years. The author makes it seem like winning the lottery is a good thing until its true implications begin to unravel within the story. The locale town folk ritualistically gather in the...

This type of convincing could be done by expressing information, a message or feelings by using written or spoken words. Persuasion takes strategic planning. We have learned about the seven most popular persuasive strategies used in our daily lives. I never realize how much persuasion is used every day. We see it a lot in marketing and advertising daily. Everyday someone is trying to persuade us to buy an item on TV, radio or signs. Or vice versa we try to influence our peers to do something or feel some way. Many times in my life I have been in situations which involve the persuasion of Reciprocation. I’m going to show that we are always inclined to repay another person with a kind gesture. My part time job is babysitting for a family every day after school and occasionally when needed. One of my experience of reciprocation happen last year right before spring break. I opened the envelope and to my surprise there was a gift card for $60 and a note wishing a safe trip. I was so excited that I gave him a big hug and thanked him several times. By the time I got home I was so overwhelm that I took time and wrote them a thank you note. As we can see in this situation I felt so...

...Comparative Essay: Country or City Living Try to picture in your mind the perfect place to live. Did you visualize living in a fast paced or laid back place? How about a place where you know and have a relationship with your neighbors? How about having the basic conveniences and amenities close by? By thinking on these questions you have categorized your choices into two categories: country or city living. Which would you choose? Many believe that city living has more benefits than country living, however, there are some that believe that country living is a real life dream. In order to make a firm decision, a comparison between the two types of living should be conducted as living in either location has both advantages and disadvantages. Some of the similar factors to consider for living in the country or living in the city are the routine, the people’s characteristics, and the life conditions. On the other hand, some of the differences to consider in living in the country compared to living in the city are the cost of living, the relationship with neighbors the basic conveniences and luxury amenities. Respect

...Flacks shows how people in the neighborhood and community didn’t accept the Duvitch family, however towards the end they started to realize that they were good people. In the beginning of Ambrose Flacks story, “The Strangers that came to Town” the Duvitches were not accepted by their neighbors. Ambrose Flack is showing that the Duvitches neighbors aren’t very accepting. People who live on Syringa St. with the Duvitches aren’t very accepting because the Duvitches are not well off, they look different and they are considered born savages. Firstly, people in the Duvitches neighborhood don’t accept them because they were a poor family. “But the Duvitches were marked people. They were the one struggling family in a prosperous community—and poverty, amid prosperity, is often embarrassing and irritating to the prosperous” (3). This proves that people were embarrassed by the Duvitches because they are not wealthy like most people on Syringa St. Secondly; the Duvitches were not accepted by their neighbors because they looked, and dressed differently. The text states, “They were considered unattractive physically. They were so meek!” (3). Lastly, the Duvitches weren’t accepted by their neighbors because everyone thought they were weird people for picking out of the garbage dump, “They were regarded as born scavengers too, for they spent hours foraging in the town dump, where they often picked up...
