Epidemiology is importance to public health in relation to disease prevention and health promotion. According to Stanhope & Lancaster (2008), epidemiology has been defined as the study of the distribution and determinants of health related states or events in specified population and the application of this study to control health problems. Epidemiology is not just “the study of” health in a population; it also involves applying the knowledge gained by the studies to community-based practice (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, n.d.). Epidemiology and its findings in relation to prevalence of diseases among certain populations is a vital ingredient to public health and the overall health of communities. The purpose of epidemiology is to find the cause of diseases that affect certain populations. The Kids on the Block

...I sat at the front porch at home and I didn’t see kids playing on the block after school, or on weekends. All my neighbor’s home doors are closed and I don’t know them, or their kids. Communication between my neighbors doesn’t exist. We are strangers because our lives are too busy and we do not have time to stay outside to know each other. When I was a child we used to play ball on the street, ride our bicycles, enjoy card games, traded baseball cards, or ran races to see who was faster. I remembered running home to get money because the ice cream truck is coming or running home for help because you got hurt once brought all the neighborhood kids to your door to wait and see the results. A quarter in your hand or a new clean band aid was admired and then everyone went back to happily playing the game at hand. Now that is history and we just talk about the good times kid had when they used to play on the streets. I go to my sister house and my nephews are with all their electronic games that replaced the precious time of playing on the street with the neighbors. They are lazy, their initiative is gone, and new inventions and communications do not exist because they want to build their scores in their favorite electronic games. Playing games alone is the most common they to do; one could be happy knowing that kids will not get into trouble since they won’t be exposed to dangerous things that are happening on the street nowadays. I see the streets empty of bustling children...

Neighborhood Watch Programs

...to look at different neighborhood watch programs found in the United States and compare two of them. After researching quite a few of them I decided to talk about the city of Tucson Arizona neighborhood watch and the LAPD (Los Angeles police department) neighborhood watch program. Before I talk about the two programs, I will first define what a neighborhood watch is. According to our book as well as different internet definitions, it is simply a program of neighbors watching out for each other during the workday, evenings, vacations or any other absence. The purpose of this program is to create an alert neighborhood by using simple crime prevention methods. This program works with the mutual aid of neighbors watching property of neighbors. This had several advantages. First, your neighbors will be familiar with your lifestyle, material possessions, and family members. They will know what type of cars you drive and who belongs, as a rule, at our residence. If a police officer drove by your home, he might not recognize that the person standing in your front yard is a stranger but an alert neighbor will recognize that this person is a stranger. The most important thing to know about these programs is that they do NOT promote vigilantism. You are never asked to put yourself in harm’s way to prevent crime. You are only asked to observe and report suspicious behavior and activities to the police department. The City of Tucson Arizona has a neighborhood watch program that seems...

Cja/314

...Week 3 Team Assignment Cja/314 A few months ago our suburb implemented a neighborhood watch program. We wanted to make our neighborhood safer, help reduce crime, and improve the quality of life within the neighborhood. Since we live just outside of a large city we realized that the local police officers could not be everywhere at once, so we started the watch so we could be the “eyes and ears” for local law enforcement. Our neighborhood watch consist of twenty members plus our law enforcement liaison, Officer Huggins. Officer Huggins is a huge asset to our neighborhood watch program. He attends our monthly meetings and is also involved in our community-wide watch activities. Officer Huggins also trains our watch members ranging from setting goals to how to report suspicious activity. His purpose of the neighborhood watch program is not to run the program but to be there for support and to guide us the best way he can so that we have a successful program. It is great to know that we have the support from our local law enforcement. Our community watch members have many different responsibilities. The biggest responsibility to insure the success of our program for years to come is to remain active. We stay active by conducting monthly meetings, having community BBQs, and also training every three months. Each month at our meetings we discuss topics such as Neighborhood watch patrolling, suspicious activity, and home security (2005 MUBX). It is very important that...

...Policies and Theories Veronica Vega: American Intercontinental University Abstract There are many theories that influenced many of the policies that we have today. Such as the Graffiti reduction program which has been influences by the argument of windows theory. Then there is the Neighborhood watch program which shows how the social disorganization theory has been influential to the program. Finally we have the Midnight Basketball program who is connected by the differential association theory. Below, all these theories and policies will be defined and there will be a better understanding on how all of these policies assisted the from decreasing violence around the community. Graffiti reduction programs include interventions that are employed on simple scales such as use of anti-graffiti paints to extensive multi-stakeholder programs. This multibillion dollar program is part of the crime prevention strategies targeting youths. The policy works on the belief that graffiti can cause social disorder as people associate the street art with presence of criminals and gangs in their neighborhoods. Stakeholders work together to eliminate existing graffiti as well as identifying perpetrators. The implementation of graffiti reduction programs have been influenced by arguments of windows theory. According to this theory, simple crimes, such as street violence, are harbingers of more serious disorders (Aiyer, Zimmerman...

George Zimmerman Shooting and Killing of Trayvon Martin

...George Zimmerman Shooting and Killing of Trayvon Martin George Zimmerman is the 28-year-old neighborhood watchman who shot and killed unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida, a month ago. He has been keeping a low profile. He is in hiding after reportedly receiving several death threats and, for weeks, all the world saw of him was an unsmiling 2005 mug shot. As investigators and reporters try to piece together why the Floridian shot a black boy 10 years younger and dozens of pounds lighter, a fuzzy picture of Zimmerman is emerging. Here's what we know so far: George Michael Zimmerman was born in 1983, the third of four children of Robert and Gladys Zimmerman. Robert, a retired military man and magistrate judge, describes the family as multiracial, telling the Orlando Sentinel that "George is a Spanish-speaking minority with many black family members and friends." Gladys is of Peruvian descent. George grew up in Manassas, Va., where neighbors describe the Zimmermans as very religious — George was an altar boy and evening receptionist at the family's parish, All Saints Catholic Church. The Zimmerman children attended Catholic school through eighth grade, then public high school. The family moved to Florida about a decade ago. George married Shellie Nicole Dean, a cosmetologist, in 2007. For a living, at the time he shot Martin, Zimmerman was working as an underwriter at mortgage risk-management firm Digital Risk. He had also been working on an associates...

Neighborhood Watch Program Implementation

...Neighborhood Watch Program Implementation CJ 3301 By Marcia University of Houston February 25, 2012 According to (Bennett, 2006, p.437), Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program that educates citizens to use techniques to reduce the risk of being a victim at home or in public by training citizens on the importance of recognizing suspicious activities and how to report them. Residents learn how to make their homes secure and properly identify their property. Neighborhood Watch also allows neighbors to get to know each other and their routines so that any out of place activity can be reported and investigated. I’m going to establish a neighborhood watch program in order to reduce crime in Crimeville. A neighborhood watch program can be implemented by first contact neighbors, ask them if they would be interested in meetings for crime prevention. Then, I would set up a time and place where the meetings can be held. I would also contact City Hall Municipal Service Department to see if they would be interested in attending the meeting. Next, I would give notice interested neighbors; let them know the time and the location for the meetings. I also could call them directly or develop a handout to pass out on meeting days. After that, I would choose and training an active body of volunteers that are directed by organized and motivated leaders in curtail. I believe that without a motivation and organization, volunteers may not be inspirited to practice and...

Debate Final

...Debate Paper XBCOM/275 November 12, 2014 Heather Fontaine The topic that I have chosen for the subject of my debate paper is the trial of George Zimmerman. On February 26, 2012 a man that was unknown at the time was about to be the center of controversy when he shot and killed a 17 year old boy named Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida. The man in question George Zimmerman was a patrolman for the local neighborhood watch in his area. Trayvon Martin was visiting his father who lived in a gated community one of which is where the shooting occurred. That morning Zimmerman had noticed a male lingering in the neighborhood, he then called the non-emergency line to report this. While on the phone with the police the dispatcher informed Mr. Zimmerman not to follow the individual and that police were on their way. When the police arrived moments later they did not find a male lingering in the neighborhood what they had found was Trayvon Martin on the ground lifeless he had been shot in the chest. As the police walked the crime scene, the items that were found were a cell phone, ear buds, iced tea and a bag of skittles, no gun. The only person that was holding a gun was Mr. Zimmerman, this was to be the only gun found at the scene. This sparked outrage within the town, state and country. Mr. Zimmerman was charged with murder and arrested, he had non-life threatening injuries to his head which were treated. Mr. Zimmerman was questioned for many hours, after being questioned...

...Essentials of MIS, 9e Laudon & Laudon Lecture Files by Barbara J. Ellestad Chapter 9 E-Commerce: Digital Markets, Digital Goods Twenty-four/seven—the mantra of the Internet. Whether it’s buying, selling, gathering information, managing, or communicating, the driving force behind the evolutionary and revolutionary business is the Internet and its technological advances. 9.1 E-commerce and the Internet Take a moment and reflect back on your shopping experiences over the last year. Did any of them not involve using the Internet in one way or another? Perhaps you simply used the Internet to research the cost of products without actually purchasing a product or service online. Perhaps you emailed a company to get an answer to a question you had about a product after you purchased it at a regular brick-and-mortar store. Or, maybe you compared prices between two businesses to get the best deal. If you did any of these you are among the growing legions that rely on the Internet as a new way of conducting business and commerce. E-Commerce Today The text provides useful statistics to demonstrate the solid growth in e-commerce. Many companies that failed during the “dot.com” bust did so because they didn’t have solid business plans, not because e-commerce as a whole wasn’t a good idea. The Internet has proved to be the perfect vehicle for e-commerce because of its open standards and structure. No other methodology or technology has proven to work...
