Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela

Position Paper - Part B: Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was the first President of South Africa to be elected in fully representative democratic elections. Among opponents of apartheid in South Africa and internationally, he became a cultural icon of freedom and equality. However, the apartheid government and nations sympathetic to it condemned him and the ANC as communists and terrorists, and he became a figure of hatred among many South African whites, supporters of apartheid, and opponents of the ANC. Nelson Mandela is a global citizen because he brought a positive change in the world and this is illustrated by his many movements and campaigns to help people, his patience and efforts in to his work, and his co-operation with others. Mandela did many movements and campaigns to find equality for his people. At the height world war II Mandela and the members of the ANC formed a mass movement deriving its strength and motivation from the unlettered millions of working people in the towns and countryside, the peasants in the rural areas, and the professionals. As a result of this movement they came together to found the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in September 1944. Mandela was elected National Volunteer-in-Chief when the ANC launched its Campaign for the Defiance of Unjust Laws in 1952. To fulfill his duty Mandela traveled the country organizing resistance to discriminatory legislation. Mandela used many disguises to run away from the police. It was during this time that he, together with other leaders of the ANC constituted a new specialized section of the liberation movement, Umkhonto we Sizwe, as an armed nucleus with a view to preparing for armed struggle. Mandela had no choice but to use violence because the government was meeting their peaceful demands at force. Mandela was a man of patience

The simple lines from a poem written by William Ernest Henley, inspired Nelson Mandel to, after almost thirty years in Prison, become “the Masters of our fate, the captains of our souls.” (William E. Henly, 2012) Nelson Mandela was born the fourth son of the Chief of the Tembu tribe on July 18, 1918 in Transkei, South Africa and from the beginning he describes that his childhood was a “form of apprenticeship shaped by knowledge of his ‘destiny’, in which he would ascend to office as the key counsellor to the Tembu chiefdom.” (Lodge, 2006) Ironically, Mandela’s name given at birth was Rolihlahla; roughly translated as ‘troublemaker’. As a young man he was always fighting for South Africa’s cause, and by doing good for the people, trouble always seemed to follow him (Lodge, 2006). At the age of nineteen, Mandela enrolled in Fort Hare University, where he began studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree (Lodge, 2006). While at the school, he became involved in the local politics in the school and was eventually asked to leave. Soon after being expelled from Fort Hare, Mandela moved to Johannesburg, where he met a man named Walter Sisulu, whom Mandela would come to form a lifelong friendship with (Lodge, 2006). Sisulu was so impressed with Mandela upon meeting him that he got him the job at the...

My father Eleazar who I got my name from is from Venezuela, just the fact that my father passed his name on to me just s his father did to him says a lot about how much family means to him. ...Mandela----Invictus Mandela Invincible: African Biography, 1999: “You had no doubt when you were with [Nelson Mandela] that he had what we call in our language 'shadow'—substance, presence. He was regal.”—Desmond Tutu A herd boy from an isolated mountainous area who did not wear shoes until age 16, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela rose against overwhelming odds to be president of the richest, most culturally diverse country in Africa. He endured more than 27 years in jail for trying to overthrow a white police state, becoming the world's most famous political prisoner. He led voteless black South Africans from the racist apartheid period into a democratic era in 1994. (Apartheid is an Afrikaans word meaning apartness or separateness. It is a system of segregation based on race that favors whites and restricts blacks to labor reserves.) Celebrated as an international hero upon his release from prison in 1990, Mandela will be remembered as one of the twentieth century's towering leaders. Mandela will also be remembered as the precedent-setting African head of state who announced his retirement at the peak of his power after only one five-year term in office. By retiring, he passed "the baton" to a new generation, leaving behind a reputation untarnished by corruption and brutality that besmirched so many long-term African leaders. More than anyone else, Mandela bridged African and European cultures--taking the best from each. He was an educated man, a lawyer, a democrat, a shrewd...

A man noted for his global effect brought about by his multiple advocacies. Among his many advocacies however, he is most famous by his fight against racism and is an Iconic Anti Apartheid Advocate. REACTION: Apartheid...a former social system in South Africa in which black people and people from other racial groups did not have the same political and economic rights as white people and were forced to live separately from white people. Nelson Mandela strongly believed that such a system was oppressive and that an end to it was not only needed but was also fairly attainable. By his words he opened many eyes & ignited global awareness. As a leader he was soft spoken yet his words struck like a sword to the hearts of those that they were implied to. Yes he spoke gently to his enemies but the people who rallied behind him had sheer magnitude. Yes, he was a frail and gentle man but his supporters carried a big stick. All simply because he showed them what was right and what was wrong and the oppressors could not find the words to enforce their argument and defend their disagreement to the facts. Mandela's power indeed lies in his words and while he is already gone, he will always be remembered for these famous quotes: "I HAVE LEARNED THAT COURAGE WAS NOT THE ABSENCE OF FEAR, BUT THE TRIUMPH OVER IT.
