Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Um, I’ve been asked to introduce myself before introducing the speaker, which is the main purpose of my being here. Um, I’m, ah, Jean Thomas. I’m the new Biological Secretary of the Royal Society, and I’m pressure biochemistry in-in Cambridge. Ah, the other thing I’ve been asked to do, ah, before I have the pleasure of chairing this lecture, is to ask you all to switch your mobiles off if you would please. And, also to tell you that, ah, this lecture will be recorded and, ah, webcast. So, this is the, uh, Francis Crick, uh, prize lecture, um, we’re about to hear. This was established in, uh, 2003 through an endowment by, uh, Dr. Sydney Brenner, commander of honor and, ah, fellow of the Royal Society, who was the joint winner of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2002. The lecture is delivered annually in any field of biological sciences, but preference is given to the general areas in which Francis Crick himself worked—uh, genetics, molecular biology, and neurobiology. And you’ll see that this, ah, evening’s speaker is imminently well-suited to talk to us. So, the Francis Crick lecturer, ah, for this year is Dr. Simon Fisher. Dr. Fisher is, ah, a Royal Society, ah, research fellow, um, so he’s, ah, a fellow of one of our flagship, ah, schemes for young scientists in the society, and he’s also reader in molecular and neuroscience in Oxford at the Welcomme Trust Centre for Human Genetics. Ah, he’s head there of the molecular neuroscience group. His laboratory carries out research into molecular mechanisms that underlie human speech and language. Simon is also, ah, the Isobel Laing Fellow at Oriel College in Oxford, where he teaches biochemistry and, ah, genetics to undergraduates, ah, studying medicine. So, lucky undergraduates to be getting it straight from the horse’s mouth. The Francis Crick Lecture was

Nerds In High School Research Paper

...In high school, there exists an unspoken hierarchy of popularity. Within this hierarchy exist multiple classes. Two of these classes are the nerds and the players. The term “nerd” has been known as a particularly negative connotation, implying one’s lack of social skills. The players are the guys that all the girls supposedly “love” and all the other guys supposedly want to be. However, it is the nerds who shall prevail later in life due to their intelligence, passion, and focus on what matters in life. Nerds always put school before most social events, such as parties. This allows them to get the most out of their classes, actually absorbing the information contained therein. These parties often introduce activities that are detrimental to...

To Geek or Not to Geek?

...Back in the day when people thought of geeks, the first thing to come to their mind was the computer geek who wore the high waist pants with the button up shirt and pocket protector. These people were the ones that were picked on in high school, the ones that were asked to fix your computer if it broke, and typically weren’t considered handy in any other aspect of life. But what exactly is a geek and who is considered a geek in today’s day and age? Is it still a stigmatism to be considered a geek? And what makes a geek any different then, let’s say, a nerd? So what exactly is a geek? According to a typical google search of the word geek you are assigned a label of someone who is an unfashionable or a socially awkward person who is generally only obsessed with computers. But is that really all it is? If a geek is just someone who is obsessed with computers, then wouldn’t that mean anyone who is obsessed with a particular subject technically a geek also? The short answer is yes, yes they are. Geeks are considered people who know a great deal in a particular subject, whether it be computers, games, or even the more “manly” aspects of life, like sports and cars. Yes you can be considered a geek when you are into cars! A geek will explain to you every aspect of the thing they are into to the letter if you ask them about that particular subject. A geek can both be knowledgeable in one area or a jack-of-all-geeks and know a lot about multiple subjects instead. So with all that being...

School

...It is said, that High School nerds make way more money than those who care about looks and popularity so in this case, yes, i would rather be the smartest kid in school than the most popular. Not only because of the money and better job oppurtunitties but also because of the chance of an easier life. With this is in mind, being a nerd may cause you not to fit in, or get made fun of, but in the longrun your the one with the better GPA and the chance to be your bullys' future boss. In my eyes, being a nerd is the best thing that can happen to you! Having good grades can lead to you getting compliments from teachers and recommendations to a better class or a better college. Also the amount of money you'll be making for your effort is outstanding! There are many colleges that look at your GPA and having a high GPA can pretty much lead you to any job you want. Another key point, is the chance of an easy going life. You wont have to worry about being behind on your rent or any bills. You'll have all your money in order and will have it for any necessity. Also, in my point of view, you will be smarter and a quick thinker. For instance, if your applying on a job and are filling out your resume, your brain will think back on english class and your resume will be well written and you have a higher chance of getting the job. Also many people say math isnt needed in "real life", but say your fencing your backyard. You, as a "nerd", will have the advantage of knowing all the right measurements...

America Needs Its Nerds

...Leonid Fridman, in his essay, “America Needs Its Nerds,” asserts his disgusted feelings towards the incorrect behavior to Americas intellectually curious “nerds” ( Fridman 3). Fridman’s purpose is to inform americans that we should value “nerds and geeks” (Fridman 29), instead of “athletes [being ] idolized” (Fridman 18). He adopts a disgusted and exaggerated tone in order to persuade Americans to change their ways, and shit their values before America falls apart, and for geeks and nerds to accept and stop being ashamed of themselves. Fridman begins his essay by validating the definition of the word “geek” (Fridman 4) from Websters New World Dictionary, and repeating the word throughout his essay. The dictionary defines greek as a “street performer who shocks the public by biting off heads of live chickens” (Fridman 6-7). Not only does Fridman define geek, but he also compares the definition to the way this term is used to call “intellectually curious and academically serious” (Fridman 4-5) Americans. “Nerds” (Fridman 29) and “anti-intellectualism” (Fridman 12) are other repetitive terms throughout Fridman’s essay that are used to establish his point, making his purpose broad. By repeatedly using the derogatory terms in a bitter tone, allows us to see to who he is speaking to, and how his point is emphasized that nerds need to stop being ashamed of themselves. In addition, Fridman ends his argument by placing it into the readers hand asking a rhetorical question towards...

Stereotypes Of Jocks

...mind: the “nerds” and the “jocks.” Since the beginning of time (or the modern education system) these groups have been at opposite ends of the spectrum. The jocks tend to be your typical, run-of-the-mill sport stars, with a haughty disposition, good looks, and next to no intellect. The nerds on the other hand, have always been seen as academically inclined, anti-social, and awkward misfits. Continuing with the stereotypes, the geeks are typically victims to bullying: courtesy of the friendly neighborhood jock. This harassment is typically brought about because our sports star cannot believe that someone so low...

Nerds

...Argumentative Essay A nerd is a person who strongly believes that perhaps studying is the only thing on earth. He/she is a person who has confined himself/herself to text books only and does not like being social. He/she believes that studies are perhaps the only motto of his/her life. Now what actually makes a person a nerd? Well, I believe it is the society which makes the person a nerd. There are number of factors in the society that contribute in making a person a nerd including parents’ influence who have nurtured him/her in such a way or it might be to compete with others of his/her class or age. Thus it is not the personal choice of an individual. Indeed, it is due to the pressures of the society. If a person is addressed by the word nerd, he/she will rather feel offensive. However, if a person studies that much and is cut-off from the world there is no harm in calling him/her nerd. But nerds take it to heart. This clearly indicates that they do not like being nerds and instead society has forced them to be one. Moreover, parents nurturing also play a very significant role in making a nerd. If a child from his/her early classes is locked in a room to study, study and study all the time. He/she will have no other option but to actually study all the time. He/she will have no other option but to actually study which will ultimately lead him/her to be a nerd. In addition, competition also plays an important role. The child because of his/her less innate potential might...

Media

...Media Summary John Doe 14 February 2014 ACC/300 Media is defined as, the main means of mass communication (television, radio and newspapers). I used various forms of media during the first week of our accounting class. The first and foremost is the Financial Accounting book. It contains all the information needed pertaining to accounting. The book begins with laying the foundation for accounting and its use within a business organization. As I’ve stated in a few of my posts during the week, before this course I was clueless to the world of accounting. I’ve had my assumptions, all of which are being proven to be wrong. My first assumption is that accountants were all nerds and that it was boring. Which either means I’m a nerd or this is actually an interesting and informative class; I believe it’s the latter. The required readings for the week were chapters one and three, which help lay the groundwork for the rest of the class. I scoured the Internet and found that accounting is everywhere and has been for quite some time. For hundreds of years accounting has been around and used daily. The Venetians started using the double booking method in the 15th century. They used it with the ships and merchants in their harbors in order to keep track of all that was going on. Like I stated in my post, I like history. When I understand the history of something and how it got started, I tend to comprehend the class work more. I also used YouTube, which again has proven its’...

Summary Of Leonid Fridman America Needs Its Nerds

...Leonid Fridman wrote an essay titled, “America Needs Its Nerds”, in which he described the derogatory terms and meanings that accompany words such as “nerd” and “geek”. I disagree with Fridman’s view on this topic. Though the terms “nerd” and “geek” may have negative connotations, they are not always meant in a negative manner. Also, Fridman states that nerds and geeks “are ostracized but athletes are idolized” (Fridman 1). I do not always think that statement is true either. For example, in the Greencastle School District, there are many students who value schoolwork, and are not “ostracized” for their dedication to school. There are also students who are dedicated to both sports and academics, which is very respectable. I believe that the...

Analysis Of Leonidman's America Needs Its Nerds

...The culture of shaming the intelligent has been prominently present throughout the United States both in reality and in entertainment and, although this proclivity for bullying the “academically serious” has declined in recent years, it is still highly eminent. In the passage from “America Needs Its Nerds,” Leonid Fridman challenges this culture by first, questioning the negative connotation associated with the words nerd and geek and second, embellishing on the fact that these negative connotations are detrimental to the success of the country. Fridman’s first topic of interest is the negative connotation that the words nerd and geek carry. He begins by defining geek as “a street performer who shocks the public by biting off heads of live...

Observation

...Nerds With nerds being around so many years over time things are beginning to change in their subculture. Nerds in modern day are not like the use to be back in the days. Everything about them are evolving from lame to the point now you can barely notice them from any other person. They’re just trying to fit in just like any other subculture now days. Nerds are not the same now how they were back then. Everyone calls this subculture by many names mostly Nerds or Geeks. What about the nerds and geeks of the world? Where is their infographic, when will nerds feel safe to leave their studies and work alone and try to live a little? When will geeks leave their parents’ basements and shout they are people too? How about our friends, will they ever stand up straight and be heard or will they be left behind the group of cool kids, plotting their revenge? Infrographics Guy commented “Aw, who cares, geeks and nerds rule or will rule the world when they get older so bow to them now while you still have a chance.” Yes, Nerds are still unpopular but they are coming up in the world. No longer are they basic people with button downs, glasses, and suspenders. The term “nerd” goes back as far as I can remember. The term is not something they like to claim but it’s just a gift that certain humans were born with. Everything about them is evolving, nerds do not dress the same anymore or do they act the same. Nerds are literally smart people and it’s a big correlation in the two. Being smart...

Leonid Fridman's America Needs Its Nerds

...The word 'nerd' can, and does mean different things to diffrent people. When someone is called nerd by their friends it is not considred a big deal, but when a stranger calls another stranger a 'nerd' or a 'geek', it can be seen as agressive. The sole idea of 'America Needs Its Nerds' ny Leonid Fridman is that America does, if fact, need its individuals that would rather stay at home and read a book rather than go out and party, who would rather study than play football, who would rather build upon their academic prowess than their social or physical skills because without kids like these, America; the great, world-class superpower, would be full of sheep who follow the trend of being anti-intellectual who intentionally dumb themselves down to fit in with people who follow the same stupid trends. One of the points that Fridman makes is that people who are a little less socially amble are often called names like 'geek'. A 'geek', Fridman writes, is, according to Websters New World Dictionary, a street performer who shocks the public by biting off heads of live chickens. This fact is especially appaling as Fridman cannot even begin to comtemplate how, and when, America's society reached the point of comparing it's academically advanced individuals to freaks on the street who kill chicken by biting their heads off for others' entertainment. Fridman...

Leonidman's 'America Needs Nerds'

...America Needs Nerds In “America Needs Nerds”, Leonid Fridman uses logical appeal, negative imagery, and tone to dispute that people are degrading nerds and there future. First, Fridman uses logical appeal to decipher how nerds are getting labeled in society. “It is telling fact about our language and our culture that someone dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge compared to a freak biting off the head of a chicken.” This example exemplifies this quote by using facts and comparisons to show what society is doing to the “nerds”. Fridman expresses how parents take sports more seriously than an education and future. “Nerds are ostracized while athletes are idolized.” The author entices the reader with logical appeal by...

America Needs It's Nerds Rhetorical Analysis

...In “America Needs It’s Nerds” by Leonid fridman uses various persuasive elements in order to convince the audience of his claim that “There is something very wrong with the system of values in a society that only had derogatory terms like nerd and geek for the intellectually curious and academically serious.” The author works with logos, word choice, and calls to action to persuade his readers of his claim. Fridman applies logos by presenting a firm background of the “derogatory” term geek which is often thrown around to described as one who takes on the rigorous pursuit of knowledge. It is written in the text that “A geek according to Webster’s New World Dictionary, is a street performer who shocks the crowds by biting the heads off...
