Chapter 1

1. What industry standards body and standards series numbers do you need to reference for Ethernet applications and cabling?
According to the reading the ANSI/TIA-568-C standard helps consumers choose the right cable (and components) for their application. The IEEE maintains the industry standards for Ethernet protocols. The standard series numbers would be 802.3 series and includes application such as 1000base – T, 1000Base – 5X, 10GBase-T, and 10GBase – SR. 2. What are the different types of Category 6 cable and what should be recommended for this network? The two types of Category 6 cables are Cat 6 and Cat 6 A. Category 6a is the better choice due to its intended use being targeted for 10 Gigabit Ethernet 3. What cable would you recommend to offer the best shielding performance? In this case Category 6a STP would be the most economical choice while providing the necessary 10 Gbase-T and preventing unwanted EMI interference. If there is budget for best quality of cable, then fiber optic cable would be the superior choice.

4. What type of cable would you use for:
a) The horizontal spaces- The best cable to use in horizontal spaces where air circulation and HVAC systems are used is a Plenum cable.
b) The vertical links – The vertical links, usually between two floors, the Riser cables are used. 5. What would you look for in trying to find fault if you had the following failures:
a) NEXT and FEXT problems in 1Gbps links- When finding fault in NEXT and FEXT, both are usually due to too many twists in the cable. NEXT occurs at the same end of the cable that generated the signal whereas with FEXT the problem occurs at the opposite end of the cable where the signal was sent.
b) Difficulty meeting 10Gbps performance requirements - Alien Crosstalk (AXT) is the major source of interference, and a limiting factor for running 10GBase-T over UTP cabling.
