Lab Report

1. What are the business goals? (10 points)

Redundancy is not required but it is highly recommended to reduce any data loss so the network automatically uses a secondary path if one goes down. The redundancy would be located in layer 3.

2. What are the business constraints? (10 points)
The school is utilizing its revenue from property taxes and bonds that must deliver the required improvements but with a very strict budget, suggesting that affordability is more important than the best technical solution.

3. What are the technical goals? (10 points)
Improve network performance by increasing the amount of users that can access the network and speed, making the network fast as possible is key to a network administrator.

4. What are the technical constraints? (10 points)
The existing equipment such as the CAT5 cable should be replace with CAT6 at every drop and Fiber Optics should replace each uplink at the core. The campus should replace or upgrade its existing ISP or service so that its bandwidth is consist with campus needs for more speed and easy access.

5. Diagram the existing network. (10 points)
There was a workstation in the library as well.

6. Describe the existing network traffic. (10 points)
The network setup makes for a very time consuming back-up and maintenance. The network currently uses IPv4 Class C scheme and these address are issued through DHCP. Wireless internet is accessed through a hotspot in a pole by every building.

7. Complete this table for all of the applications that currently run over the network. (10 points)

...explicit and background traffic. Generally, however, most of the traffic will be background. The important thing to remember is that not all traffic needs to be explicitly modeled, only the specific traffic we are interested in. In most cases, we want to see this traffic running under load, so we add background traffic to the explicit traffic to achieve the load we need/want. Another side to this is how much time you want to spend doing the analysis. Because explicit traffic is modeled packet by packet, it takes processor cycles and time to simulate it. This lab is intended to show you how to model all three types of traffic and test a set of circumstances against these types. Procedure Open Project 1) Select File/Open “op_models\netw410\TrafficModeling.project\TrafficModeling.prj” The Scenario “Explicit Traffic” should open. Comparison of Traffic Modeling Approaches Network Model 1. Source nodes (video servers) with different ToS (1, 2, 3) Interface with WFQ 2. 100 video users (MPEG4)—3 available service classes 3. Destination nodes Part 1: Simulation With Explicit Traffic Create explicit traffic using IP Traffic Flows We will create three traffic flows representing the traffic downloaded by the three classes of clients. In this scenario, all traffic will be modeled as explicit traffic. 1. Open the object palette. 2. Scroll down and double-click on the “ip_traffic_flow” demand from the demands palette. 3. Connect the IP demand between src_1 and......

...NETW410 Network Design Lab Scenario The following description of a network will be used for a series of network design problems that have been incorporated into the NETW410 weekly labs. Description of the Organization The organization in question is a community college with a single multibuilding campus. As the local area grows in population, this campus is experiencing a corresponding growth in enrollment. In order to meet this growth in on-campus students as well as accommodate the demand for online courses, the school is redesigning the network. As the main source of funding for the school is revenue from a property tax and previously approved bond issue, the funds must be spent in a fiscally prudent manner while still delivering the required network improvements. The administration, in consultation with the elected board of directors, the student body, the population of the taxing district, and the faculty, has determined the following improvements are needed. Immediate Goals Build a new IT wing onto the administration building to centralize all of the servers that are currently located in a closet in each of the individual buildings. Connect all of the buildings to the new IT wing of the administration building. Provide controlled wireless access for the students in each classroom. Provide open wireless access for the students and the local population in the areas outside of each building. Provide a high-speed wired network connection to......

However, many rows are needed for the routing protocol names. (10 points) Interior | Exterior | Distance Vector | Link State | Path Vector | Standard | Proprietary | Standard | Proprietary | Standard | RIP | EIGRP | OSPF | BGP | | 2. Should the individual buildings be connected to the Administration Building at Layer 2 or Layer 3? (10 points) The individual building should be connected to the Administration building at layer 3 because each building has their own subnets in the new IP scheme. 3. If the individual buildings should be connected to the Administration Building at Layer 3, which routing protocol or protocols should be used? (10 points) When selecting a routing protocol, one important criterion is how quickly the protocol adapts to changes in the network and resource allocation. EIGRP is a distance vector protocol and would be a good routing protocol to use because the network devices are Cisco based. EIGRP is fast, consumes little resources, supports VLSM, and scales well. EIGRP only works with......

...NETW410 Lab 4: Connecting Point A to Point B Lab Report 1. How should an Internet connection be made for the current campus? Why did you select this option over the others? AT&T is the carrier providing service to the existing campus as well as the new campus. Examine the offerings for Internet access to select the one that should be used. (10 points) Since there are multiple locations that require large amounts of bandwidth I would recommend the site connect to the internet through Fiber optics. I recommend fiber because of the high demand for bandwidth with today's technology. Fiber also has a very high tolerance for external interference. AT&T currently offers a high speed fiber network that would fit perfectly in this environment. 2. How should the existing and new campus locations be connected to each other? (10 points) When connecting the 2 campuses together I would definitely recommend running a private link between the 2. You would typically be ISDN, frame relay or Ethernet, depending on the distance, amount of speed required, and the amount of money you want to spend. 3. Should the two locations share an Internet connection? (10 points) Since there will be a lot of traffic on the network I would recommend each site connect to the internet separately. 4. Compare the advantages, disadvantages, and cost of fiber optic cable, 5 GHz wireless bridges, and free space optics as a means to interconnect the campus buildings to the IT wing of......

...NETW410, Professor’s Name Lab 4: Connecting Point A to Point B Lab Report 1. How should an Internet connection be made for the current campus? Why did you select this option over the others? AT&T is the carrier providing service to the existing campus as well as the new campus. Examine the offerings for Internet access to select the one that should be used. (10 points) I think internet connection should be made using (DSL) and Broadband. I decided on this option because AT&T’s Digital Subscriber Line service (DSL) offers highly secure, high-speed, cost-effective business Internet connectivity over existing landlines without interrupting voice services. AT&T Broadband Internet Services Provides a single point of contact for business’ connectivity needs, access the Internet and Intranet, stream audio and video and transfer large amounts of data and provide access to remote workers. 2. How should the existing and new campus locations be connected to each other? (10 points) The Existing and new campus can use a fiber optic cabling in order to connect the two campuses. Fiber optic cables are less expensive, there is less signal degrading, non flammable and the best option compared to other competitors. On the other hand the campuses can request a static IP address through the internet provider. Through this the two campuses can connect on a network via WAN 3. Should the two locations share an Internet connection? (10 points) Yes, for this......
