Over millions of families in America starving and unable to provide food to feed their families. Why is it hard for American families to provide food for their families and not starve? Most of American families need to feed their family and the only way to buy the food is from the government. The government only provides certain amount of money to the families to help them out to provide food for their family. Then the government only gives the families certain amount of food stamps to buy food with. Instead the government is concern how some American families are overweight. Most families can’t buy healthy foods because of the high prices of healthier food. The only food families can afford to feed their family is junk food. Over the last …show more content…
The author talks about families living different parts of America such as Iowa, New York, and Texas are living off of food stamps and not providing healthier meals to their families. In New York, there are one in a million families that is on hunger and can provide only for their family besides themselves. There is a family in Houston, where they have nice things and yet live in a homeless shelters. The lady’s son does yard work and tries to save his money up so he can buy the latest Air Jordon’s shoes. The family in Iowa, grow their own crops to feed their family, but yet still gets money from the government. The article focuses on how families living off of food stamps that are overweight and can’t provide their family with healthier meals. The families living in different parts of America think the healthier food prices are raising up and the only food they can afford is the junk food. The government thinks that all families should eat healthy, but yet can’t afford the food to provide for their family without being …show more content…
It reminds me the time I went grocery shopping with my mom, there were a lot of people with full carts of food. I asked my mom how they could afford to buy all that food and my mom told me because of food stamps. The government pays for their food and I was shocked about how the government pays for families. All the people bought was nothing but junk food. There were none healthy food and they were overweight. When I came out to the car, I would see those families with nice big cars and think to myself how they could afford that big nice car but they afford to buy food and the government gives them money to buy food. It just didn’t make sense to me about that. I know it’s hard to pay your bills because you have to feed your family first, but why would you have nice things and use the government to get your way with buying your food. They could sell the car and buy a nice decent cheaper car. I guess some people want to make themselves look good instead of being food poor and it reminded me of the family from Houston about how they have nice things. They can’t afford to feed themselves and their family because they live off of food stamps to provide food for their family. I feel that if the people are living off of the government’s money and the government want the families to provide healthy food should have the

Black Boy Essay

...Kristina Teodoro March 7, 2013 Diverse Voices Essay Hunger In the world we live in today, many people growing up in modern America are sheltered behind the wealth that hides the uncomfortable expectancies and dulls the long term effects of hardship. The conclusion of “hunger” is evident even in our pampered lives; however, it holds a much more significant meaning in the lives touched by the grim fingers of poverty, defeat, and in these next few cases, racial discrimination. Whether it is hunger for food, knowledge, acceptance, or for love, hunger is everywhere, and harshly attacks everyone, young or old, black or white. In Black Boy, Do the Right Thing, and Color of Fear, we encounter people that suffer from hunger for love, knowledge, acceptance, and for what they believe is the right thing through the different circumstances they face. In the autobiography Black Boy by Richard Wright, Richard faces not only physical hunger, but also the hunger for love, acceptance, equality, and knowledge. He yearns for attention from people. Since Richard received little at home, he did not learn how to associate with others. In the end, this provoked a problem when he leaves home because he was unable to understand the friendliness of the new people he came across. “Nevertheless, I was so starved for association with people that I allowed myself to be seduced by it all, and for a few months I lived the life of an optimist.” (178) Since Richard’s home was a hostile environment, we often find...

Root Cause & Problem Definition

...definition draft: A nationwide survey of more than half a million households found that in 2009 more than one in six, or  17.4%,  of New York households reported in 2009 not having enough money to buy food that they needed during the prior twelve months for themselves or their family. This rate was significantly higher for NY households with children (23.3%) over the two year survey period. Twenty-five of the twenty-nine Congressional districts in New York had more than one in ten households experiencing hunger in NYS. The Albany-Troy-Schenectady MSA had an overall hunger rate of 16.5%, including 21.6% among children. Hunger has been increasing dramatically in NYC over the last two years. The loss of jobs and the housing crisis has increased the demand for emergency food by more than 50% statewide in the last two years. In this context, the Governor's proposed draconian cuts to so many essential services, especially for the homeless, and lack of jobs funding, would be a tidal wave overwhelming the safety net. Nearly one in four children in our state feel the pain of hunger. The rate of poverty among children is well over 25% in many inner cities upstate such as Rochester, Buffalo, and Albany. President Obama has set a goal of ending childhood hunger by 2015. As observed with the new data, the struggle with hunger is a serious problem in New York for children and adults. Not a minute can be wasted between now and 2015 if we’re to reach that goal. All corners of government,...

It’s saying even though world hunger has went down its still at an unacceptable rate. 1 billion people will still face starvation this year. The food and Agriculture Organization and The world food Program estimated that 925 million people that are almost 3 times the population of the U.S are likely to go hungry. Harrasment

...Harassment: The effects of “eve teasing” on development in Bangladesh The Hunger Project • 5 Union Square West • New York, NY 10003 • www.thp.org Imagine for a moment that you are an eleven year old girl in Bangladesh. After helping your mother cook and serve breakfast, you are preparing for school. You should be excited. You like learning and school provides a reprieve from the drudgery of household chores. But you are not excited. Instead, you are filled with dread. That is because every day, on the long walk from your house to school, you are surrounded and teased by a group of boys. The boys yell indecent things at you. They laugh. They push, pinch, and grab at you. Sometimes they pull at your clothes so violently that you are afraid they will be ripped right off of your body. By the time you get to school, your face is hot with humiliation and your eyes sting with the fear that you will have to go through the whole thing again on the walk home. *** The Insidious Everyday Reality Sexual harassment, often known as “eve teasing”, is a regular occurrence for the women and girls of Bangladesh. A recent study by the Bangladesh National Women Lawyers’ Association (BNWLA) showed that almost 90 percent of girls aged 10-18 have undergone the experience. The harassment can take a variety of forms and the perpetrators come from multiple walks of life; they are rich and poor, educated and uneducated; according to the BNWLA study, teenage boys, rickshaw pullers, bus drivers...

Communication in the Hunger Games

...In The Hunger Games, communication does not seem to be on the top of the Capitol’s list. In fact, the Capitol only communicates to the districts what they believe needs to be known. The lack of communication in Panem has led the districts to become oblivious to what is happening around them. It is interesting how the districts are able to function properly with little or no communication on a daily basis. The most the districts hear from the Capitol is when they are reminding the people about why there is the Hunger Games and what could happen if they were to try and form a rebellion again. So, if there doesn’t seem to be any real form of communication, how do the districts communicate with each other, or with the Capitol? How do the tributes communicate with each other during the Games? Communication between the Capitol and the districts is rare, but occasionally there is some form of communication at the necessary times. The most communication the districts receive from the Capitol is when the Hunger Games is preparing to begin. They mostly communicate through the media. Media, such as the television is their most prominent form of communication. During the Reaping, the Capitol shares a video with each district. When reminding the districts about the past uprising, they make sure to show the outcome of District 13. It is their “yearly reminder that the Dark Days must never be repeated” (18). They are reminded of the past country known as North America and how the new country...

...Women's Education to Malnutrition in Children Global hunger affects nearly a billion people, which is an overwhelming number. It afflicts 55 million children worldwide, 19 million of whom face outright starvation, and results in some 3.5 million deaths each year. This loss of life is all the more tragic because acute malnutrition is predictable, treatable, and cost-effective to treat. As we all know, malnutrition is of growing concern within our world. Just because developing nations go from low income to developed higher income countries does not mean that they will get over the malnutrition pandemic. Instead they will have to learn to face new malnutrition diseases as they industrialize. In the United States we never see any children starving to death, however in other parts of the world the situation is a lot different. Countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East are the most affected. On a world map, areas prone to deadly outbreaks of malnutrition often overlap areas of war and conflict, but nutritional emergencies are just as likely to occur as seasonal phenomenon in more stable regions. Agricultural communities, for example, are routinely exposed to seasonal hunger during the annual hunger gap, the predictable period when a family’s food stocks run out before new harvests are available, a seasonal predicament that results in life-threatening malnutrition among young children across the globe. Hunger, or under-nutrition, results from the insufficient intake...

K-Drama Cliche

...Recap... And all i could think of is "This is so K-drama cliché." I stretched my hands for support. But the guy had other ideas. He grabbed my waist and carried me bridal style. “Aish! Put me down.” I barked swinging my legs back and forth trying to get out of his cast iron grip. “Stop squirming…” he spoke. His voice sent a surge of chills down my spine; I looked up to see a handsome guy with soft brown eyes, chiseled jaw and long eyelashes staring back at me. my throat went dry; This guy was beyond gorgeous. “Yah! We’re here.” He spoke nudging me from my daydream. “O-oh” I replied hoisting myself as he put me down. ”Omo! Kenchana?” the cute old nurse spoke caressing my arm soothingly. I nodded my head in response. “I just need some ice for my ankle.” I said rubbing my swollen egg shaped ankle. .. Minho’s POV I walked down the corridor, observing my surroundings until some girl bumped into me sending her falling to the ground flat on her bum. I stretched my hands to help her up; she took my hands and tried to support herself up but I noticed her struggling she must have hurt her leg… so I grabbed her smooth legs and carried to the nurse’s office to get checked. She squirmed in my arms trying to make me let go. “Stop squirming” I told her looking her silky brown air. Her chocolate eyes met mine and I swore my heart stopped. She had this long hair, plump lips and rosy cheeks. When our eyes met I glanced away. I noticed we reached the nurse’s office. “Yah we’re here.” I said...

Societal Hierarchy in Divergent

...The Hunger Games Trilogy Literary Analysis Paper “At some point, you have to stop running and turn around and face whoever wants you dead. The hard thing is finding the courage to do it.” -Katniss Everdeen (Catching Fire, Pg 118) As I read The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins my mind was constantly bombarded by violence, tragedy and a deadly love triangle. The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay were all emotionally difficult books to read, but they were also very powerful books that made me really think about my reality. The Hunger Games Trilogy also made me think about the meaning of the titles and what significance they have. Words with simple meanings like “hunger” in the title The Hunger Games and “fire” in the title Catching Fire can become vastly complex when used literally and figuratively in a very interpretive context. Before I read The Hunger Games I knew that the title was the name of the games that Katniss is partaking in, but after reading the book I realized there were so many other interpretations of the title. The Capitol’s “hunger” for control is how I depicted the title. The Capitol wants control everything and anything. The Capitol seeks to control how Katniss lives her life. Katniss is constantly told what to do and when to do it, but from a young age she has deliberately disobeyed the laws that the Capitol has forced upon the citizens of Panem. The Capitol claims that they rule Panem in their selfish way for the benefit of the Districts...

A Tale of Two Worlds

...Imagine two worlds, much like our own, that harbor secrets that could mar the faces of their so-called evolved societies. Worlds where the power of the few outweighs the lives of many and the need for order can result in a death count.  These are the types of worlds that authors Susanne Collins and Veronica Roth have created in their respective trilogies. The Hunger Games and Divergent paint separate pictures that both express the story of young heroines stepping up to the threshold of rebellion. Each heroine faces their challenges all whilst trying to grow and thrive in a world that wants them dead. However, within the pages of these books, when the blood and bone has been stripped away, the reader can trace the threads of similarities. These similarities exist between the two novels and also between their dystopian settings and the real world.  Katniss Everdeen and Beatrice Prior are not only two rebels fighting for a cause, but are also two young women who face everyday hardships beyond their respective wars. They have the ability to teach the reader far more about life than is seemingly possible; lessons that are relatable and useful to just about anyone, regardless of age. Knowing what one stands for and residing in that truth, understanding that what is broken can be mended, and believing that gender does not define one’s abilities are three of the most important messages aimed at young adults in The Hunger Games and Divergent trilogies. Katniss Everdeen and Beatrice (Tris)...

J.K. Rowling vs. Suzanne Collins

...J.K. Rowling vs. Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins and The Harry Potter Series by J. K. Rowling have vied for the attention of young readers, not for a long period of time, but have, in their time, blown other books right out of the water. They are some of the most popular books of the 21st Century. Many people favor one series over the other, however both books have made a huge impact in not only literature, but in popular cultural as well. These authors differ greatly in the tone and style of their books, however, they similarly surround much of their work around the subject of violence and war. Both Rowling and Collins are without a doubt amazing authors. Rowling has magnificent imagery and lengthy descriptions that creates a beautiful reality allowing children to get lost in their fantasies of a magical world full of wonder and possibilities. “Perched atop a high mountain on the other side [of a black lake], its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castle with many turrets and towers” (Rowling, 276). It provided young and old readers alike with a magical safe haven. Collins has a very different writing style, though quite contrasting to that of Rowling, she creates a masterpiece just as great. Her universe is so much more daunting, although lacking in magic, she creates a world with some parallels to our own, filled with corrupt political society and broken government. The science fiction trilogy takes place in a future...
