New Hire Communication Worksheet

Select a company you are familiar with. Imagine that you work for the HR department of the company. You are tasked to develop a message to orient new hires to the company culture, process, procedures, and general information.

Compose a message for new hires using the three-step process outlined in Ch. 5 of Business Communication.

I have deleted Step 1, 2, 3 from his work sheet since the same sent to me by my instruct showed that it was voluntary work and not mandatory work. My New Hire Communication is on the next page and I chose to present as though I worked for Wal-Mart (a company I have worked for in the past).

I also don’t see word limit for this assignment so I kept it short and sweet since, as a new hire at Wal-Mart, most of the company history is detailed in a view that you would see during the training. I have written this message aimed more towards newly hired Assistant Managers who would most likely receive a greetings e-mail from the HR department or directly from the Store Manage themselves.

Hello John,

My name is Jane Doe and I am the Store Manager of the Wal-Mart you have been recently hired to through our coporate office. I just wanted to give you a warm welcome and just tell you a little bit about myself and our family here at Store #[insert here].

Our store was opened in May of 2020 and has been through a lot even before it opened its door. During construction, the area was actually hit with a series of torandos and everything that had been completed up unto that point had been destroyed. With the help of the community, who we make sure to give back to even today, we were able to rebuild and instead of losing 9 months of work we wound up being 2 months ahead of our original build schedule.

I’ve been Store Manager here since 2025 and have helped the store grow into one of the few high volume stores part of the company. A high volume store is a store that regularly handles a million dollars or more daily in purchases. We handle a lot of sales, specifically in our food, electronics, and men’s clothing department due to the strong miner and oil rig community here.

Our family is composed of a mixture of full time and part workers as well as 2 co-managers and 7 assistant managers, which is about to become 8 with your addition to our Wal-Mart family. I look forward to meeting you face to face and helping you become an important part of our family here at #[insert here].

Our HR leader, Ms. Jo Doe, will be contacting you soon to get you set up with a time to come in and have your orientation, which will give you a better idea of what you will be doing at store, how it’s run, give you insight into the company’s history as a whole, and inform you of company policies that you will be abiding by.

Again, I am excited to have you join our family and I welcome you wholeheartedly.
