...News Media April Hum/176 February 3, 2013 Gary Rhodes Information media does have a social responsibility in many ways and forms. Every tiny detail of what is going on in the world or any particular place should be available for the populace. Keeping accurate information truthful and available so the public may form a public opinion of one’s own, giving the media different ranges on how they wish to portray the information. Shedding the light on the topics of issues can show how that particular area sees another through another’s eyes. They also have a responsibility to show a solution to the issues by expressing the opinion of experts, allowing an advanced individual that may have studied along this subject give their point of view on how they would fix the problem. It should work for the culture that may view the media yet not make hasty objections on which culture may have the solution for the issues being conveyed to the public. Information media also have a big social responsibility to the youth of today. ...phone is 1:1. Books, radio, TV are 1: many. The internet is the first media that does both well. The internet is many: many. People nowadays use new media to update latest new that happening around us, for an example, In May 2009 there was a big earthquake in China. Citizens reported it on Twitter and other social media within seconds, minutes before the government knew about the earthquake. In contrast, the last time there was a similar big earthquake in China, it took the Chinese government 3 months to admit it had happened. China doesn’t want this to be report on new media and China can’t control these situations, at some times the government’s only option is to totally close down all of Twitter-like social media tools. This proof of just how quickly social media can be used to spread news. According to a talk by James Surowiecki, he starts the talk by reading out two articles regarding the tsunami incidents that had occurred and carries on by saying how these incidents were reported immediately as unorganized pieces of information. He continues by stating how information was gradually shared across and then the incomplete pieces started falling in place and giving a clearer new picture. James Surowiecki also gives the example of a tsunami, of which live videos were given by people directly living the event, making viewers feel as if they were actually there, an aspect of news that mainstream media very often fails to achieve. I especially agreed his “ant” analogy that...

New Media and Youth: a Challenge or an Opportunity?

...INTRODUCTION This study is divided into several chapters. The beginning chapter presents a detailed background of the study conducted among a group of secondary schools pupils in The Netherlands. The study focuses on new Media and whether its’ usage has any effect on academic performance. This is explored from the context of HAVO Dutch youths in Rotterdam aged 14-16 years in two schools; Calvijn and Comenius colleges particularly from their peer solidarity and socialization processes. HAVO is one of the four streams of secondary education in Holland referred to as Senior general secondary education (HAVO). The stream takes five years and qualifies students to enter higher vocational education (HBO). Some students can also choose to enter pre-university secondary education VWO or MBO education (Dutch Education Journal, 2007). The analysis is based on both qualitative and quantitative findings from Focus Group Discussions (FDGs), structured and semistructured interviews, drawings, observations and questionnaires. This study considers both the advantages and disadvantages of youth engagement in new media. The study also attempt to contribute to the wider development discourses in the field of children and youth. The conclusion for this book highlights how new media has played a role in the youth cultures in structuring their peer relationships. Throughout the study, pseudo names are used for ethical reasons. Effects of News Media

...| Effects of News Media Essay | HUM/186 - MEDIA INFLUENCES ON AMERICAN CULTURE | By: | Hill, Clinton | 1/27/2015 | In today’s society, information from the media plays an important role in our lives. I do agree with the fact that social media companies have a moral responsibility. We as people depend on the different types of media to provide the information that we seek. From the news to your favorite artist, we tend to find information to which we can relate, especially with music. If you are having a bad day there is a song from one of your favorite artist that you can relate to and it can help brighten your day or lead to a negative effect. With politics, some people might like what they hear and will protest to get their voice heard by the public figure or politician to possibly change their views. The Rodney King beating is a good example how the media influenced people to go on a rampage and riot the city. News and political opinions work together in a sense. Politician uses news media outlets to captivate the masses. Without the news media being involved in politics, Politicians couldn’t possibly reach out to the media they are trying to attract. But, with the news media is working hand and hand with politics to give us views and also opinions. We can choose whether we agree or disagree with the politics that we are viewing. Things like this can be very influential on our daily lives. Now that technology has advanced over the years, you can pretty much access...

New Media and Politics

...ITRODUCTION In an attempt to understand ‘new media’ and politics we need to define what ‘new media is and what politics is. First we start by defining politics. According to Mansoor Maitah, Politics, in the broadest sense, is the activity through which people make, preserve and amend the general rules under which they live. Lasswell also defines politics as the process of who gets what, when, and how. He believes that politics is the process of allocating scarce values. He comes up with this equation; politics = allocation values (resources) wealth status power. By definition ‘new media’ according to Marshall McLuhan (1980) generally refers to the digital media which is interactive, incorporate two- way communication and involve some form of computing as opposed to ‘old media’ such as telephone, radio and TV. However there is a thin line between ‘old media’ and ‘new media’. This is because the ‘old media are getting digitized and some have consolidated with some ‘new media’ forms. Therefore we surround the term ‘new media’ with quotation marks to signify that they are digital interactive media. Without the quotation marks we generally are denoting media which is new to the context of discussion. To illustrate this, TV at is invent was new media and therefore cannot be said to be ‘new media’. Also parts of the world that have not received certain types of media will call them new media when introduced to them. GAGETRY DEFFERETIATION FROM THE PLAT FORMS.-TO BE DONE VIRTUAL...

Evolution of News Media

...Before the invention of new media, traditional media was largely a capital intensive business, reserved for those with power and access to multi-billion dollar presses and expensive physical distribution systems, costly audio-visual recording and government liscensing (Chia, 2011). Not only has new media disrupted the old conventional model by reducing the barrier of entry to extraordinarily low levels, it has also challenged the commercial model that funds traditional news media gathering and adversely gained tremendous recognition as an essential platform for information dissemination and acquisition (Koh, Lim, Ng, Detenber and Cenite, 10/08/2005). As one of the most wired nations in the world, the Singapore media industry sees audiences and advertisers alike, moving away from traditional media towards digital media (Choo, 12/08/2013); where news from myriad sources is available free of charge and where advertisers have a wide range of options for reaching consumers, including cost-effective online advertising and online retailing. In Singapore, traditional news media are primarily represented by two companies, one owned by Temasek (MediaCorp), one of the state’s sovereign-wealth funds, and the other (Singapore Press Holdings) that is government-centric through close monitoring and regulation. Now forced to compete with a vast spectrum of new publishers such as WikiLeaks, giant news aggregators like Yahoo, MsN and Google News as well as millions of bloggers of whom are...

New Media Technology

...dependent on regular contact with the new media for information, entertainment ,ideas ,opinions and many other things all of which are connected to our attempt to make sense of who and what we are. The growth in the technology sector is so high that it has made us addicted to it and does not let us function without its presence in our lives. As “McLuhan said that technologies are the extensions of the human body” hence the recent new media technology to be discussed here would be the Internet. Most people, when asked to describe new media, refer almost instantly to the Internet (Lohr, 2003). Internet has made the world a very small and close place to live in where one can be updated with all the major happenings around the world in fraction of seconds. Internet provides us with lot of information on one particular topic and also saves time. No matter what the age or the circumstance would be it is very necessary for people to communicate with each other. Communication is a prerequisite for each activity. However, when considering newer automated communication systems, the factor of access to new media becomes very important. Recent work demonstrates that today’s generation of older adults lag far behind their younger counterparts, particularly with respect to the adoption of computer technology and the Internet. So the internet is considered to be the fastest and the easiest mode of communication from which one can email, make new friends all across the globe,...

Effects of News Media

...Effects of News Media Effects of News Media News media can be described as media that provides news coverage to the public. People all around the world look at the news or even hear about the news in order to find out what exactly is going on in the world today. I believe that the media is socially responsible for lots of things that may go on around the world due to the fact that once it is put out there for others to see then it at times can affect how another person may react. I feel that once the information is out there even if the information may be false others may perceive it as being true without doing the proper research to know if the information is true. I think it’s up to everyone to research the information to make sure they know exactly what they are talking about before passing on the information. Also, if the information is bias I feel that it should be noted ahead of time so that others know this information up front. One example is when we heard that taxes maybe increased for small businesses and those who had small business wanted to protest without gathering further information. They chose to get lawyers and have representation when they didn’t even need to do that, but they wouldn’t even know that since they had not done the research for themselves and just listening to information they had heard somewhere. Another example was when the 911 attack happen. This particular incident changed America in a big way which lead to more security around the world...

Effect of News Media

...Information and news media have definitely affected America in many ways, both good and bad. Positively, its affected America in the sense that news is more easily accessible and obtainable compared to years ago. Being that not all news stories reported are 100% accurate cause much turmoil, depending on the severity of the story. I believe information media does have social responsibility, but at the same time, the audience does as well. Reporters should be reporting accurate information to people it could cause havoc. Hypothetically speaking, if the news reported that gas prices are going to go up a dollar, how do you think the American people would act? They’d be calling everyone under the sun and lining up at gas stations. Now if only the story was actually true, that whole mess would’ve been avoided. I’ve seen instances firsthand where news stories haven’t been accurate and people freak out. While the reporter or news station should take responsibility, so should the person who is listening. Now a day, it’d be naïve of a person to take the first thing they hear about a topic and run with it. Not many people are truthful and accurate with things they spit out of their mouths. Reporters or not, they’re human just like us. I just can’t wait for the months when political campaigning takes place. And by that, I mean that I can’t stand them. Information and news media are the main reason campaigning is so successful. If a politician wants to get something out, that’s the way...

New Media & Politics

...New Media and Politics New media is allowing for innovative, effective, inexpensive, and faster ways to spread politics. The old days of only being able to watch political debates or campaigns on the television or on the radio are gone. New media has lead to more freedom of choice, vast sharing capabilities, instant responses from the public, and better ways to fundraise. No matter how many new forms of media come out nothing will ever replace the television or radio. New media is not substituting the old way of politicking, but rather enhancing it. The Internet, along with YouTube and such things as DVR and TiVo, gives viewers more of a choice of what they want to watch. They no longer have to watch what is limited to them through television. Knowing this, politicians can figure out more effective ways to campaign or broadcast messages that are more appealing to the public so that the public will be well informed of it and want to view it. Technology is so advanced that most of these developments in new media such as the Internet and YouTube are accessible from one’s cellular phone. That ease of accessibility gives politicians incentive to communicate information to the public in ways they can view from their cellular phones in addition to older more common ways of corresponding with the public. In doing this politicians are making sure people have the choice of viewing the information in the form most favorable to them. News travels fast and with such websites as Twitter...

News Media

...News Media Hey, My first major assignment for this political campaign was very difficult for me. I had to extensive research of websites such as Drudge Report, Daily Kos and Colbert nation to get some sort of political background. This being my first assignment I was focused on being fair, honest and providing a balanced coverage. As easy as that may sound it wasn’t easy at all. It’s easy to read information about this political campaign and develop an opinion of myself and start writing about it. Then I go back over it and then I’m thinking in no way is that a neutral stand point and I have to start all over. If I am not writing about my opinion about the campaign it easy to write about others especially if you are in agreement with someone else. When researching bout this campaign it is important to decipher between another’s biased opinion or just general information. I really wanted to provide information in my article to allow the public to develop an opinion of their own instead of forcing my own opinion on them or influencing them by providing a strong argument. Which I really do believe I could have done. Going back to these sites, I never realized how biased they can be it was hard for me to even find non biased information throughout these internet sites. I guess I never realized it because I was never looking for it but when looking for a neutral standpoint...

What Isn't New Media?

...aWHAT IS NEW MEDIA? Defining New Media Isn’t Easy By Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid   Introduction: What isn’t new media?   New Media is a 21st Century catchall term used to define all that is related to the internet and the interplay between technology, images and sound. In fact, the definition of new media changes daily, and will continue to do so. New media evolves and morphs continuously. What it will be tomorrow is virtually unpredictable for most of us, but we do know that it will continue to evolve in fast and furious ways. However, in order to understand an extremely complex and amorphous concept we need a base line. Since Wikipedia has become one of the most popular storehouses of knowledge in the new media age, it would be beneficial to begin there:   Wikipedia defines New Media as:    “… a broad term in media studies that emerged in the latter part of the 20th century. For example, new media holds out a possibility of on-demand access to content anytime, anywhere, on any digital device, as well as interactive user feedback, creative participation and community formation around the media content. Another important promise of new media is the "democratization" of the creation, publishing, distribution and consumption of media content. What distinguishes new media from traditional media is the digitizing of content into bits. There is also a dynamic aspect of content production which can be done in real time, but these offerings lack standards and have...

Effects of News Media

...Effects of News Media Sharmendra Das HUM/186 November 30th, 2015 Patricia Morriss Effects of News Media Although there are a lot more outlets for news today, news media dates back centuries. In the early stages, news was spread through word of mouth, then came ancient scripts, which later gave rise to print media such as newspapers and magazines. As technology evolved, along came broadcast media such as radio and television in the 1940-1950. These days in the age of the internet, all these are available instantly at your convenience. You can now access the same newspapers, magazines, and stream radio and television anytime, anywhere rather than having to wait. With all these outlets, information media has a social responsibility. It also plays a major role in shaping of political opinions, and has transformed journalism and news consumption. The general public relies on information media daily. If the information is false, the public may perceive this as truth unknowingly. For these reasons the media outlets need to have social responsibility. Since majority of the public receives their news from the internet, these media outlets need to research and check their facts before publishing. And afterwards take responsibility for the content they publish. Since most people are connected via social media, information travels like wild fire, either being true or false. In the middle of all this there are spammers, who spread false information in the hopes for it to...
