Newborn Discharge Instructions

Feeding:

Feed your baby whenever he or she shows signs of hunger (hands in mouth, rooting, lip-smacking, cooing). Breastfed babies usually eat every 2-3 hours but may eat more frequently at certain times of the day. Bottle fed babies usually eat every 3-4 hours.

Urination:

During the first few days of life, your baby will urinate 2-3 times each day. By the 4th or 5th day of life, your baby should urinate 6-8 times a day.

Bowel Movement:

Your baby’s first bowel movements are called meconium and are thick, black and sticky. During the first 4-5 days of life, your baby’s bowel movements will change from brown to green and finally to yellow. Most babies have 3-4 bowel movements daily. If you are breast feeding, you will know your baby is getting enough to eat if he/she has at least 3-4 soft yellow bowel movements each day.

Bathing:

Your baby does not need to be bathed every day 2-3 times a week is enough. Use mild, non deodorant soap and dry the baby very well to prevent him/her from becoming cold. Be sure to clean the diaper area well with each diaper change.

Cord Care: Your baby’s cord will fall off in 5 to 15 days.

Positioning:

Your baby should fall asleep on his/her back. Your baby should NOT sleep on his/her stomach. It is OK for your baby to lie on his/her stomach when he/she is awake and you are playing.

Temperature:

If you are concerned that your baby is sick, you can take a temperature under the baby’s arm. The normal temperature for a baby is 97 to 99 degrees.

Notify your baby’s Doctor immediately for any of the following problems:

• If your baby is having difficulty breathing or breathing very fast • If your baby’s skin or eyes are becoming yellow • If your baby is sleeping all the time and not walking us for regular feedings • If your baby is not having regular wet diapers or bowel movements • If the skin around your baby’s cord is red or pimply or if you notice a foul odor from cord • If you notice drainage from baby’s eyes • For circumcised boys; if there is bleeding or pus from the penis • Temperature over 100 degrees

Brief daily. walks are OK and you may find them enjoyable. • Kegel exercises as instructed by your nurse.

Notify your Health Care Provider for any of the following situations:

• Heavy vaginal bleeding (soaking more than one pad per hour). • Fever, temperature greater than 100.4 degrees F. • Abdominal pain which is not relieved by pain medication. • Pain or burning when urinating. • If you do not have a bowel movement within 3-4 days, or if moving your bowels is painful. • Redness or painful swelling in your breasts. • Pain, burning, or foul smelling discharge in your vaginal area. • Pain, redness, discharge, or opening of your incision line, (if you had a Cesarean Section) • Any signs of depression (if you feel you can’t take care of your baby or yourself. Or if you fell very sad or if you just need someone to talk to).

...been many things that happen to the child but nothing happen and she should be happy with the outcome. The court can’t offer you money to help you raise a child, that’s her job even though she is not the reason the baby came. 2. I would not agree with the court when it comes to not rewarding money for educating and raising the child. The court doesn’t know if Seslar was mentally ready to have this baby. It could be really hard in her life right now, maybe that’s the reason she wanted to have a procedure to stop having children. The court doesn’t know her circumstances so maybe that’s the reason she decided to sue. I think that I would also choose to disagree with the court’s decision based on the amount of money it would take to raise a newborn child. I think that the people...

Trickster Tale

...resources they needed to survive. One night for the celebration of a new born baby in the village they were having a ritual. The ritual consisted of a bonfire and dancing as they worshipped the gods and thanked them for the newborn. One lonely coyote that had been alone for quite awhile noticed a fire in the distance and decided to draw closer for he was curious. He got as close as he could without drawing attention or giving himself away. Coyote observed the situation at hand. He saw the Indian baby all tucked away in his mother’s arms and thought to himself what a good meal that would be. The sly and sneaky coyote quickly made a plan of attack. He would make a distraction by howling as loud as he could and then charge to the village and grab the babe and take off. Coyote knew it was risky but he had faith he could get away with it. He let out a howl and a couple yips and then knew it was time. He made his charge. Everyone started to scream out of shock and terror; he caught the mother off guard and swept the baby boy out of her arms. But, he hadn’t made it out yet. A group of the warriors surrounded him; he tried to bolt and successfully got through their legs. The men were on his tracks though. The Iroquois were not foolish and would not give up finding the newborn. They kept chasing coyote and finally wore him out. He had given up. Personal Narrative

...PERSONAL NARRATIVE 1 When taking a look at how my life has changed over the past five years I can truly and honestly say that I would never have expected the things that have happened. Back in June 2007 I was separated from my husband and moved into my own apartment. I was in the United States Navy for six and a half years at that time. My divorce was finalized in January 2008 and I deployed to Afghanistan in March 2008, for eight months. After coming home from a long deployment, I had orders to move to Lemoore, California. This area is nothing but farm lands and I did not like that at all. I was born and raised in Southern California and enjoyed the fast-paced life that I was living. It is amazing how things have changed. In July 2011 I was honorably discharged from the United States Navy and I moved back in with my mother and two younger sister. Growing up we lived in a condo in Diamond Bar, California, but that all changed over time. The same time that I got out of the military, myself, my sisters and my mother had to move out of our condo and into a two bedroom apartment. Talk about a huge change in life. This move has not been easy for any of us. There is no privacy and we all have to share the living space. I share a bed with my middle sister and my mother shares a bed with my youngest sister. I never thought that I would be unemployed for this long, but it has been over a year since I got discharged. It seems like nobody is hiring right now...

Cystic Fibrosis

...Cystic Fibrosis Latisha Long HCS/245 March 26, 2012 Cathy Coyle Cystic Fibrosis In today’s society there are many diseases out there. It is to contract these diseases by coming in contact with a carrier. People who are into sharing dirty needles, having unprotected sex, or not being able to maintain a healthy and clean environment, can become infected with these transferable diseases. There are some diseases out there that you can inherit; one in particular that stands out is Cystic Fibrosis (CF). CF is a life threating disease; there are 1,000 new cases each year. With the new treatments and studies, people are living longer with CF. Before people with CF were only living into the early years of their childhood, and now they are living well past their 30s. CF is an inherited disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. A defective gene and its protein cause the body to produce an abundance of thick sticky mucus in the lungs. The production of this mucus causes the lungs to clog and can lead to life threating infections. CF can also cause the pancreas to obstruct and stop enzymes, which allows the body to absorb and breakdown food. This can cause slow growth and malnutrition in the body, and the sticky mucus can block the airway which makes it difficult to breath causing this disease to be life threatening. People with CF have shorter life expectancy, because of the way CF controls the body. The treatment for CF is improving every day...

Requiring Newborn Screening of Critical Congenital Heart Disease

...Requiring Newborn Screening of Critical Congenital Heart Disease Date With the numerous technological advances that have occurred in today’s health care system, one would think newborn screening would be required in Maryland for the most common birth defect in the United States, critical congenital heart disease (CCHD), but only just this year has the state considered the requirement (Department of Legislative Services, Office of Information Systems [DLSOIS], 2011). Critical congenital heart disease, a disorder in which an infant’s heart or blood vessels near the heart develop abnormally before birth, affects approximately 8 out of every 1,000 infants each year in the US, amounting to around 36,000 infants (DLSOIS, 2011). CCHD is the leading cause of death among infants within the first year of life, amounting to nearly 40% of deaths, often due to the fact that a large number of infants with this disease go undetected (Martin, Bradshaw, & Wright, n.d.). Although some babies are diagnosed with congenital heart disease shortly before or after birth, many diagnoses are not made until days, weeks, or months later; sometimes not at all. Many benefits are associated with implementing CCHD screening, many treatment options are available for those diagnosed with CCHD, and a bill is being proposed to the State of Maryland’s General Assembly about including this screening in the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Newborn Screening Program (DLSOIS, 2011). The benefits...

Few Good Man

...Few good man Time from time you may hear stories of abuse by the military justice "system". There are multiple destroyed and financially devastated families out there suffering heartbreak and loss at the hands of an uncaring, unfeeling and unjust process which makes a mockery of our Bill of Rights. Military justice for the majority is prefabricated according to the wishes of the local Commander, and the "trial" or "court-martial" is tantamount to a pre-ordained verdict of GUILTY. How could any court proceeding be considered fair when the "convening authority," by right of title, is given the power to select the judge, the jury and defense and prosecution attorneys? It may go "unsaid," but the implication is very clear - if the convening authority "sees fit" to bring about a court-martial, then the accused can be assumed to be guilty. What's special, or even topical, about A Few Good Men movie is it speaks to how military honor can be so readily suborned by the authoritarian impulse. And second, how the same honest pride - not to mention competence - is necessary to bring such posturing would-be tyrants to justice. The main issue the movie touches upon is military justice. A good marine abides by the following code: 1. Unit 2. Corps 3. God and 4. Country For this code to be at its effective best, it must be governed by truth and justice. What happens when truth and justice fail to be active participants of this code? Justice has been defined in many ways...

...stability. But ceramic caps have a very less ESR and are useful in bypassing high frequency noise but cannot provide the compensation to maintain the loop stability as the dominant zero is at a very high frequency. So LDO’s with ceramic output capacitors have an additional series resistor R comp which performs the functionality of ESR with the C comp to provide the additional zero required for compensation. Load dump occurs when the battery is disconnected when it is being charged by the alternator. A huge voltage spike of 120V is generated and can take up to 400ms to decay. Signal diode arrays can also be used in digital and computer circuits to protect high speed data lines or other input/output parallel ports against electrostatic discharge, (ESD) and voltage transients. By connecting two diodes in series across the supply rails with the data line connected to their junction as shown, any unwanted transients are quickly dissipated.
