NFC

Near Field Communication (NFC) technology makes life easier and more convenient for consumers around the world by making it simpler to make transactions, exchange digital content, and connect electronic devices with a touch (NFC 2011). Cell phone carriers, such as AT&T, use NFC capabilities in their cell phones as a selling point to the consumer. Some companies, like Samsung, use NFC TecTiles to help their consumers find what they need with just a simple glide of their phone. Major credit card companies use the NFC technology in their credit cards to make it simpler for customers to pay for merchandise without having to swipe there card.
With the advancement of the first telephone to modern day smartphones, AT&T has been there. AT&T has always had a unique way of staying ahead and on track with the quick advancement of technology. Numerous smartphone application developers have tried to create software that will allow you to no longer worry about having your wallet. As long as you have your smartphone and the application, you still have the ability to pay for merchandise. With AT&T’s new application, ISIS, Near Field Communication technology is something they are continuing to move forward with. ISIS is a smartphone application that has been successfully designed to replace your wallet and put all your information in one program. Some people might say it sounds crazy, but Ben Spencer (2013) had done studies that have shown, “that cell phone users cannot leave their cellphone alone for six minutes and check it up to 150 times a day”. With that being said, you can see that technology is moving in a way that will replace our everyday necessities such as our wallets and what is in them. ISIS is currently being tested in Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah before it is released worldwide. The ISIS application promotes that it is safe to use because you have to create a unique PIN code of your choice. The program stores sensitive data on the NFC chip, which in turn, is designed to restrict unauthorized access. This feature is remarkable if it can really keep out the hackers. However, not even cellphones with passwords can keep out the everyday hacker. If there is a machine that can break a phone lock code then there is probably a machine that can break ISIS’s security code (ISIS).
Samsung is another company that is using Near Field Communication to their advantage but is doing it in a much milder manner. Samsung has developed adhesive squares, with NFC Technology, called TecTiles. These TecTiles rely on near-field communication technology to communicate a set of instructions. There are multiple uses for TecTiles, such as the ability to utilize a specific TecTile for everyday purposes. For example, a TecTile can be assigned to your Car Dash Mount. Once applied to the car mount, the NFC chip is activated and the TecTile can utilize GPS Navigation and Maps each time that specific TecTile is touched with your NFC active smartphone. TecTiles can even be placed on your nightstand and when activated with NFC, will set your alarm each night. The Near Field Communication technology also allows businesses to benefit as well, by putting TecTiles on the back of their business cards or on promotional advertisement to better help market their business. (Dolcourt 2012)
NFC technology is not just a chip in a phone; there are major credit card companies, like Visa, that have the small NFC chip embedded in the card that also utilizes the “contactless” technology (Phone Scoop). The website Phone Scoop explains that NFC is used most often for financial transactions, as a replacement for swiping or inserting a plastic card. This technology also has the ability to act as authentication, such as an employee ID to grant entry to buildings. Unlike RFID tags, which are in some major credit cards and debit cards, Near Field Communication have one of the biggest advantages is very short rage, usually 1 to 2 inches away from desired contact. RFID tags can be read from several feet away (Phone Scoop). RFID tags, or radio frequency identification tags, are intelligent bar codes that can talk to a network system to track every product that you can put in your shopping cart. RFID tags have stored data in the microchip that waits to be read. According to Bonsor and Fenion, NFC is promising because it presents the next evolution of convenient payment with and added layer of security. With credit cards having NFC chips embedded in them, they believe since you can use the tap method of payment instead of the swipe, “it eliminates the possibility that someone could skim your data via the magnetic strip on the card.” Near Field Communication can capturer the information that is stored in RFID tags (Bonser, Fenion). Google Wallet is also an application that stores credit card information under multiple layers of security and allows for quick tap payments at NFC terminal, which is similar to ISIS (Bonser, Fenion). Security remains a common concern with any new advanced technology that might not have all the flaws worked out.
Mark Hachmans article: “Visa: Goodbye to Mag-Stripe Credit Cards, Hello to Chip Cards, NFC”, states how Visa endorsed the Near Field Communication technology, which in turn, helps Visa with embedding payment information inside phones. Richey, interviewed by Hatchman, claims “we believe our program offers the right level of direction and encouragement for merchant and issuer adoption of chip- at the right time”. This means Visa is continuing to move forward with latest technology to help with the next generation of payments. The consumer is always waiting for the next innovation to change their life and make it easier and more secure. So with “a commercial framework in place,” Visa’s “goal is to enhance security and support” to the next era of payments. Visa has a push to speed up mobile payments, and to improve international interoperability and security. “There is an industry standard for NFC that is supported by all leading mobile device manufactures and is compatible with millions of contactless card systems already in use world wide” claimed by the Phone Scoop website. So the next era of payments is already in the making as said in previous paragraphs about the application ISIS, presented by AT&T.
Near Field Communication is only in the beginning stages of showing how resourceful this technology can be. Any individual, no matter their lifestyle, can use NFC. As technology grows, businesses are starting to see how technology benefits them. For example, cutting labor costs by replacing them with a computer, or building customer value by allowing the customer to feel like they are in control of what they are purchasing. NFC also allows businesses such as movie theaters or bus transportation to let their customers have the ability to use their phones as the physical ticket.
With the progression of Near Field Communication, society’s curiosity of this particular technology is in question. Is NFC secure? Is NFC really that easy to operate? Will NFC really catch on? These questions will come into play to see if society will accept the advancement of NFC and trust that their information is secure. In a perfect world we could trust anyone without question and we would not have to worry about our personal information being leaked out to the public for everyone to see, or even be concerned that criminals would try and steal our identity. NFC technology is a truly remarkable concept, especially when it is implemented in cellphones, allowing customers to freely use it for their everyday needs.

...NFC technology uses the following smart devices: • NFC – enabled mobile phone: NFC enabled mobile phones, which also are referred to as NFC mobiles, are the most important NFC devices. Currently, integration of NFC technology with mobile phones creates a big opportunity for the ease of use, acceptance and spread of NFC ecosystem. • NFC reader: An NFC reader is capable of data transfer with another NFC component. The most common example is the contactless point of sale (POS) terminal, which can perform contactless NFC-enabled payments when the NFC device is touched against the NFC reader. • NFC tag: An NFC tag is actually an RFID tag that 8. How Does The NFC Technology Work : NFC works in an intuitive way. The touching action is taken as the triggering condition for NFC communication. Two NFC devices immediately start their communication when they are touched. The NFC application is designed so that when the mobile or the device touches some other NFC component that contains the expected form of data, it boots up. Hence, the user does not need to interact with the mobile device anymore but just touches one appropriate NFC device, which may be an NFC tag, an NFC reader, or another NFC-enabled mobile phone, because the coupling occurs intuitively and immediately. When you consider ubiquitous computing requirements, this is a useful property of NFC communication. For each NFC communication session, the party who initiates the communication is called the initiator, whereas...

Seahawks Discover Beer Hijinks

...Seahawks Fans Discover Beer Hijinks Tickets to watch an NFL game aren’t cheap, and for those of us who don’t have corporate entities sponsoring our fandom and nacho habit, the opportunity to attend one is a big deal. We wear jerseys to be properly attired, take photos so we can be properly nostalgic and buy overpriced beers to get properly inebriated. And because we go through so much to make cheering on our football team a big event, most of us are even willing to splurge on the big beers. Support the team, right? Everyone is in this together. Unless they aren’t. Two intrepid Seahawks fans noticed something curious recently about the beer cups they had just purchased at Qwest Field in Seattle. The medium 16-ounce – which sold for $7.25 – and the large 20-ounce – which sold for $8.50 – held exactly the same amount of beer! Though it didn’t take a very complicated experiment to prove this hypothesis, the company that manages the stadium – First & Goal – was willing to admit the liquid discrepancy after an “internal investigation”. Representatives were also unsure how or when the conundrum began. The other issue confounding First & Goal was simply why there was so much outrage. After all, people who paid only $7.25 for a 20-ounce beer should feel like they won a mini, alcoholic lottery, right? Some of them may have, but in cases like these, the more vocal group is typically the one who feels more slighted. And for the long-suffering Seattle fans who remember...

Students Attitude Towards Science in Relation to Their Academic Performance Among Elementary Pupils

...PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction This situation prompted the researcher to conduct a study on students’ attitude towards science and health in relation to their academic performance in an identified school. In today’s world, science encompasses many ways of gaining information which helps individuals know themselves and their environment better and develop and renew this information frequently. Teaching science and technology to individuals help them to learn how adopt and adapt an inclination which forces them to think objectively and make the right decision confronting different events and situations. This inclination provides a comfortable life for them as well as for their family and their environment (Akgun, 2001). If students learn science using a scientific procedure and skill they would be able to use these procedures and skills in their daily life. In this procedure, while students’ attitudes towards science increase, they develop their creativity skills. During the primary educational period, courses on science and technology achieve a great importance comparing to the other courses since these courses teach students the environment, natural events and scientific developments as well as critical thinking and problem solving. Email Usage and Benefits

...An organization can benefit greatly from the use of email. Not only can employees communicate with both clients and coworkers, they can do so more efficiently than without. Email is a very powerful tool to use in business or even in everyday life. When a company needs its employees to share information together, rather than to take hard copies of a sheet to each individual person, a mass email can be sent out that goes to each employee company wide at the click of a button. Very efficient. This is not to say that there are no cons to emailing. Employers should monitor their employees well. There are a number of reasons why a company might not want an employee emailing without limit or restriction. For example, should an employee use the email system for their personal benefit or gain, their productivity could be reduced or temporarily cease. They could make mistakes while trying to cover up both jobs at once or while attempting to multi-task. Aside from personal usage and lost productivity, the companies information, or even clients information could be compromised. An emails path is usually predetermined, however, do to hackers and identity thieves, it may not always go only to who one may wish or think. An alternative to emailing is instant messaging. It is even faster. Emails often need to be refreshed or checked regularly for incoming messages where as im’s come right though. Technology in the 20th Century

...Technology in the 20th Century HUM/300 Technology in the 20th Century Technology is rapidly evolving and has been for many years. Scientists and inventors are always on the lookout to invent something to make the average person’s daily life easier. The 20th century brought many technological advances in the world from the television to the air conditioner. Many of the technologies so fundamental to everyday life came from advancement during this time. The author of the paper will discuss three technological developments in the 20th century including: the airplane, the automobile, and the computer. The Airplane For centuries humans wanted to invent a device that would allow them to fly like birds. Kites, gliders, and air balloons were many of man’s creations to attempt to derive the privilege of flying. Two men, Wilbur Wright and Orville Wright, were the first to find some success in inventing a device that enabled flying. On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers flew there invention for the first time. However, this was only a small start because their aircraft did not fly very high and it only stayed in the air for about a minute. Although this was a small triumph in the goal of flight it marked the beginning of the technological advances that produced the modern airplane. When the Wright brothers invented their aircraft they received immediate recognition and other inventors and aviators worked hard at inventing a better aircraft. In 1909, Louis Bleriot, a French...
