Faux Falls: The unnatural wonder of Niagara

What do you think of when you hear Niagara Falls? You probably think of a tourist destination with astonishing waterfalls . While it is a huge tourist destination for about 22 million people, it's not the only use(Lopez 2007). It's one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It has beautiful scenery and it's a breathe taking experience, but it has been modified for the use of hydropower(Lopez 2007). Beginning as a natural wonder of the world, it started after The Ice Age. Ice melted over, and drained into Niagara River, which caused erosion onto the cliffs between Lewiston, New York and Canada. With this now happening, it created what we now know as Niagara Falls (Niagarafallsstatepark.com, 2014). Niagara Falls isn't just one of the most beautiful places in the world but it is also puts out over 2.5 million kilowatts of hydro electric power, enough to power 24 million 100-watt light bulbs.(Lopez 2007). In 1950, the United States and Canada came to an agreement about the hydropower production from Niagara Falls. Inside of the agreement it included equal parts of hydro power, along with how much water is allowed to flow and also the scheduled months and times (Lopez 2007). In the agreement, the Canadian power stations draw 56,500 cubic feet of water per second and the American power stations draw 32,500 cubic feet of water per second. The flow rates of water are monitored by Ontario Hydro through a sensing devices on both the Rainbow International Bridge and the Whirlpool International Bridge. During the peak months of tourism, more water is on during the day and it is is reduced during the night to allow more of the water to flow into intakes used for power generation (niagarafallsstatepark.com, 2014). As a result, this is where the faux falls name comes in. The falls were man modified so they could be successfully used for hydropower. Hydropower is a clean and safe source of power. Hydropower is created by the water behind the dam flows through an intake and pushes against blades in a turbine, causing them to turn. The turbine spins a generator to produce electricity. The amount of electricity that can be generated depends on how far the water drops and how much water moves through the system. This makes the Niagara falls hydropower a completely renewable resource for electricity. (Lopez, 2007) Like any other place Niagara Falls had both good and bad times. While producing tons of electricity and welcoming tons of tourists, the town has once went dry. But because of its balance between the United States and Canada, Niagara Falls still remains. Today it's producing hydropower and they are still attracting millions of tourists. Even though, the author Ginger Strand biggest problem is the severe modifications of a completely natural exhibit. She emphasizes that what was one of America's natural wonders, has been turned into something almost completely man made. (Lopez, 2007)

...No. 8106 Friday, November 19, 2010 Opening the Great Path of Worldwide Kosen-rufu In the 50 years since SGI President Ikeda embarked on his journey for worldwide kosen-rufu, arriving in Hawaii on October 2, 1960, the SGI movement based on Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism has spread to 192 countries and territories. The August and September 2010 issues of the Soka Gakkai monthly study journal Daibyakurenge featured several experiences by SGI members sharing their personal encounters with President Ikeda and their endeavors to promote kosen-rufu in their respective countries. In commemoration of this 50th anniversary, the SGI Newsletter will introduce a selection of these experiences. “A Rainbow over Niagara” By Elizabeth Izumi SGI Canada Executive Advisor It was about six months after I married my husband, Hugh Izumi, a Japanese-Canadian businessman, and was living in Toronto that I received a letter from my mother saying: “Soka Gakkai President Ikeda will be visiting Toronto. He will be an internationally renowned leader someday. As there are no Soka Gakkai members in Canada, please go and meet him at the airport.” Though it was my mother’s request, I wasn’t eager to comply. I was pregnant and not feeling very well, and I also didn’t want to be pressed into practicing Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism. Nevertheless, to please my mother, I went to the airport (on October 11, 1960). I saw a group of Japanese people who looked like they had just arrived. It was...

Niagara Falls: Maid Of The Mist

...Niagara Falls would be the perfect destination for those who have a deep appreciation for natural beauty (the falls itself). More specifically, older folks who have the time and money to spend at this spectacular attraction, would really enjoy the experience. they would be able to get a closer look at the falls by boarding the Maid of the Mist. Or if they are more into a calming nature walk, they can take a short trip over to the American site of the falls. There they would be able to walk along the forest trails. This would make for an intimate date with nature. Niagara Falls would also be the perfect destination for younger generations, with a thirst for fun. There are endless sites and attractions for them to see. For those with a large...

...Vacation to Canada I feel the power of rushing water below me as,I am looking at Niagara Falls.I watch the beauty of Niagara Falls.Staring at the falls,a colorful rainbow appeared.I look at thousands of gallons of water going over the edge and hungry birds swoop down eating yellow gross foam that is formed by the rushing water. Many people taking pictures trying to capture the beauty of Niagara Falls. What wonders await in Niagara falls? We look at the time and realize we are late for our tour!We ran as fast as we could. We just made it to our tour under the falls! We look out the tunnel and feel the power of the mighty falls.Next, we had to go to our next tour the white water rapid walk. We got to see the raging rapids of the Niagara River and it was crazy how fast the water rushed by.Before the guide said, “if you jump in to cool off on this blistering hot day it would be a fine of $10,000”.He also warned us about wild groundhogs.Which we actually saw one during our walk....

Globalization

...countries as well. Although international trading today is seen as a norm, not all countries are reaping the benefits. The term globalization has been increasing since the mid-1980s and can be grouped into different categories, which include: trade and transactions, capital and investment movements, migration and movement of people. Globalizing processes affect and are affected by businesses and work organization, economics, and the natural environment (Held,McGrew,Goldblatt,Perraton). Globalization can create new opportunities, new ideas, and open new markets that an entrepreneur or business owner may have not had in their home country. It can provide a lot of great opportunities for a community, and help it grow. Growing up in Buffalo/Niagara Falls, NY, Globalization has heavily impacted my community. Being so close to the Canadian border has allowed for heavy traffic between the two Countries. In order to survive in the 21st century, companies in every industry are taking steps to expand internationally through trade and investment. Through the years, we have built a solid relationship with Canada, which has therefore allowed for a lot of international trade between the two Countries. International expansion is almost required in today’s world for companies to survive and remain competitive in their environment. The U.S trade has increased from $430.2 billion to $932.3 billion from 1988 to 1997, which is a 117 percent increase....

Love Canal Research Paper

...When the talk of love canal is brought up, what comes to mind? For William T. Love, there were hopes and dreams of creating a love canal to add to the small working-class city creating a “dream community”. However, dreams don’t always come true. Love canal was a small town city run by William T. Love in Niagara Falls, New York. Love had plans on digging a canal from the upper Niagara rivers to the lower rivers. In 1910, Love’s dreams were crushed due to not being able to “endure the one-two punch of fluctuations in the economy…” All that was left to commemorate Love’s dreams was a partial ditch where construction had begun. In the 1920’s the canal was used as a dumpsite for hazardous chemicals. Creating dumpsites for chemicals is no unnatural...

Reading

...necessary for reading, reading is more complex than just recognizing words. The reader has to make sense of the words base and their context. While engaged in reading, the prior knowledge is activated along with personal connection, ideas, and opinions. Unfortunately, children will develop reading problems if they do get the necessary stills that will allow them to function on a higher level and succeed in life. Jennings, Caldwell and Lerner (2010) mentioned that it is said that “Children must learn to read so that later they can read to learn” (pg. 4). Therefore reading is the foundation that children need to be successful in life.  Jennings, Caldwell and Lerner (2010) advised that to help children read better and develop a love for reading, fall on the laps of the teaching professionals since they are the planner and implementation of instructional services (pg. 3). It is understandable that even though there are different levels of readers, the ultimate goal is for teachers to create good readers in children. Jennings, Caldwell and Lerner (2010) iterate that reading is making sense of text. The reader generates his or her own mental version of what is been read (pg. 13). In my field experience, I have seen children who could read any word off paper but had no opinion of what is going on in the story. I have also experienced teachers getting frustrated when their students are not able to decipher or decode words in context or make connection to text. Jennings, Caldwell and Lerner...

...'personal problems' of the poor, creation or renovation of housing stock, educational and cultural 'opportunities'.[26] As many examples listed above show, urban renewal has been responsible for the rehabilitation of communities—as well as displacement. Replacement housing – particularly in the form of housing towers – might be difficult to police, leading to an increase in crime, and such structures might in themselves be dehumanising. Urban renewal is usually non-consultative. Urban renewal continues to evolve as successes and failures are examined and new models of development and redevelopment are tested and implemented. An example of urban renewal gone wrong is in downtown Niagara Falls, New York.[citation needed] Several failed projects such as the Rainbow Centre Factory Outlet, Niagara Falls Convention and Civic Center, the Native American Cultural Center, the Hooker Chemical (later the Occidental Petroleum) Headquarters building, the...

Narrative Essay (English Comp 1)

...Narrative Essay A Trip I’d Like To Take I’ve always thought that traveling is so spontaneous, adventurous, and life changing. To me, it just means that we get the opportunity to discover and learn new things that other places have to offer. Considering this, I have tried to be content with the places I’ve traveled throughout my life; Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, New York etc. Recently I started to think about escalating my travels to new locations. And, to start with, I attempted to figure out where I wanted to start. While traveling to the places I have, I discovered that perhaps the most irritating aspect for me was that all these places are cliché, “Niagara Falls”, “The Islands”, and “The Big Apple”. I told myself, “The next place I travel will be the exact opposite of cliché”. I crave change; I was thinking maybe Spain. I enjoy conversing in the Spanish language, the culture, the food, and not to mention the people. Since I’m extremely attracted to what Spain has to offer, I hope to plan on starting my traveling journey there. From my early childhood, I was raised in a Caribbean/Spanish atmosphere, so I speak both of the languages and have always enjoyed the music. When I was brainstorming where I’d start my first adventure, it was no surprise I desired Spain. I’m literally excited by the immensity that the culture has to offer and the amazing feeling of a new surrounding. I hope that when I first visit Spain, I’ll be eager to return and motivated to go outside my...

Community Case Study: South Dunga

... South Dundas, long before the municipality was identified as South Dundas, has for numerous reasons been recognized as a close-to-perfect location to live and raise a family. The almost rural community is chock full of beautiful, historic brick homes, many fronting one of the great, truly spectacular waterways on the planet. And the geographical location is pinpointed between the major centres of Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. All within a few hours distance. Residents enjoy choices in almost all aspects of community life. Churches to schools, live theatre to live music stage, motel to B&B to inn, seniors’ residences (plural!), and eateries from fast food to truly home-cooked fare. There are active Legion’s and Lions’ Clubs, Optimists Clubs, IOOF groups, politicians who familiarize with and can acknowledge residents, Food Banks, sports groups and organizations, a rare abundance of waterfront and water accessible parkland including a dog park, and more and more and more. “Fortunate” would be the descriptor most applicable to the lifestyle enjoyed in South Dundas.
