The North Carolina coal ash spill affected many people living near the spill and the environment it was dumped into. Most coal ash is dumped into unlined ponds and rivers causing North Carolina’s Rivers to become polluted. Most of the major companies go unchecked with only 19% being checked. There is only one question, what did these major companies do wrong and how can we prevent it from happening again? One of those major companies is Duke. This company had the largest coal ash spill in North Carolina affecting the Dan River. The reason this happened is because of the lack of regulation. With most of the plant going unchecked accidents like the one with duke are more likely to happen. There are many flaws in this regulation such as lack of groundwater monitoring, using basic safeguards at coal ash dumps, and with a lack of staff there is no possible way for them to check all of the coal ash Dams If these sites keep going unchecked more rivers will become polluted. Pollution is a major problem when it comes to a coal ash Dams. One of the major problems is that there is always the risk that the Dam could leak …show more content…
More regulators are needed to help ensure that all the dams in North Carolina are carefully inspected and all safety measures are met. When it comes to disposal of the wastes produce most companies in North Carolina dump them into unlined ponds causing major problems in nearby communities. Proper disposal of the wastes created at the dams are needed so there would be a lower risk of water being contaminated. With most of our sites being high hazard we cant let them leak into a nearby areas water reserves. If we don’t do something about the coal ash dams it could cause a lot more damage in the nearby

Corporate Integrity in Duke Energy

...Managing Corporate Integrity Yiyang Zheng BUSA 552 Dr. Kerlin May 7th, 2015 INTRODUCTION This paper will review the ethical business practices of Duke Energy in the light of the recent Coal-Ash spill. It will review ethical principles, business considerations, stakeholder impact, and the company’s internal policies related to preventing environmental damage. The thesis of this research essay is that Duke Energy did not only suffer financial loss due to being made to pay a fine for environmental damage, but also the company’s actions negatively affected its reputation and share price. Therefore, companies should carry out ethical practices and risk assessments to best serve the needs of all stakeholders. BACKGROUND INFORMATION In February, 2014, Duke Energy released a high amount of coal ash into the Dan River, Rockingham County, N.C., which violates the Clean Water Act (CWA) (1972). The CWA is a waste-water and pollution reduction programs, setting guidelines and regulatory standards for different industries (EPA). Specifically, The CWA of 1972, amended in 2002, states that “it is the national policy that the discharge of toxic pollutants in toxic amounts be prohibited” (Clean Water Act, SEC. 101.3). Duke Energy was found guilty on nine misdemeanor violations (Smith) and was ordered to pay compensation. As a result, Duke Energy’s leadership agreed to pay $102.2 million for the damages caused, and the CEO confirmed that the company took......

...ENTRY # 1 ENTRY#2 ENTRY#3 ENTRY#4 ENTRY#5 ENTRY#6 ENTRY#7 ENTRY#8 ENTRY#9 ENTRY#10 TYPES OF BUSINESS LETTER Editorial(ENTERTAINMENT): Animal welfare can no longer be overlooked 5:29 AM Saturday Nov 24, 2012 Accelerating pace of change in popular attitudes demands that film and other industries take heed of prevailing sentiment. The reaction of Sir Peter Jackson to claims by animal wranglers that animals died during shooting of the Hobbit spoke volumes of his awareness and sensitivity to the new environment. Photo / Supplied The disclaimer "no animal was harmed in the making of this film" has become a standard phrase of popular culture. So accustomed are we to seeing it among films' closing credits, and so material has it become, that it is startling to realise it is a recent innovation. Just over three decades ago, Hollywood was casually ignoring any concerns about animal cruelty in major movies such as Apocalypse Now and Heaven's Gate. In Apocalypse Now, a water buffalo was slaughtered with a machete, and Michael Cimino's flop western included chickens dying in staged cockfights. Such instances were not particularly unusual in the history of film-making. Perhaps 100 horses were, for example, killed during the making of the original Ben Hur in 1926. Customarily, this was justified on the grounds of artistic merit. But the outcry that greeted Heaven's Gate indicated this excuse would no longer suffice in a society increasingly opposed to animal......
