This paper explores the concept of "Not in My Squad" (NIMS) which is a grassroots concept spearheaded by Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA) Daniel A Daily. This concept originally created to help Noncommissioned Officers (NCO) of the United States Army (Army) better identify Sexual Harassment/Sexual Assaults (SHARP) and counteract it by building a foundation of trust with their junior enlisted Soldiers in their formations. His initial foundation of NIMS was able to set conditions and expand better than he could imagine. Instead of just focusing on SHARP related issues he expanded to teaching better leadership skills, training, and physical fitness. He took a hard line at changing the toxicity of the NCO Corps and created an environment of …show more content…
The second part of the pledge is Not in Our Army. Not in Our Army, address the rest of the force from officers to senior NCOs and including Department of the Army Civilians. This part of the pledge brings everyone into the conversation and not just leaves it into the hands of junior NCOs. It allows senior leaders to closely monitor,
NOT IN MY SQUAD 4 supervise, make recommendations, and implement NIMS plans in order to enable junior NCOs to have more freedom of maneuver over their sections. SMA Dailey plan with NIMS started from the bottom first and then he worked his way into addressing senior leadership. He knew that starting from the top first would not have given him the desired effects he was looking for. He knew the way to bring about a culture of change would be to start with young NCOs and creating a climate of trust.

This part is a reminder that Soldier of the Army represents the United States of America and that we are United States Ambassadors while overseas. We do not only represent Americans, we also represent American Interest. The American people put their trust in the men and women in the Army that we will be there to protect their freedoms from enemies both foreign and domestic. Without that trust of the American people, the Army would no longer exist. The Army serves the American people and projects, America's power wherever they go. Without that constant reminder, it would make this part of the pledge useless. SMA Dailey took note of this and added it as part of the pledge. The Army also developed a web tool to go along with the NIMS pledge.
Not In My Squad Web Tool The Army created the NIMS web tool in order to help further SMA Dailey plan to give NCOs the help they need. A leader can use this tool to help assess their platoon, squad, team, or a crew on what they are doing right, and what they need to improve on. A very useful tool, especially if you want to see how you yourself are doing as a leader. It is not just for junior
