In today’s society being homosexual is accepted more and more each day. Gay rights have been modified and it is now acceptable for homosexual couples to get married. However, in 2011 homosexuals had a very hard time fitting in and being themselves completely. Frank Ocean, a song writer who is gay, wrote a song in 2011 called “Novacane”. Writing this song opened a lot of people’s eyes and were okay with being who they are and not what society wants them to be. “Novacane” is told from Frank’s perspective. He talks about meeting a girl and figuring out that he needs “Novacane for the pain” when he is with her. The way he spells “Novacane” instead of Novocain is what the whole song is about. Nova is something bright and shiny, most new stars are called novas. Cane which is spelled incorrectly means taking in a lot of drugs or alcohol, it also means to hurt. When Frank put those two words together he is saying that “Novacane” means something that is new and he is taking it in a lot and it causes pain. He is talking about the girl that he met and is with but, when he is with her he hurts inside because he knows that’s not what he needs. So he takes drugs when he is with her to numb the pain. Knowing that society wouldn’t accept him, Frank tries to hide his pain and continue with this relationship with this girl. “Every single record autotunin' Zero emotion, muted emotion, pitch corrected, computed emotion”. Frank is saying that when he is with her he is fake like auto tune. He is never really himself and has to put up a front to be “normal” in society. Right after he says, “I blame it on the model broad with the Hollywood smile”. This proves that he is hiding the fact that he is gay and cannot express himself freely because he has to date this famous girl to fit in. Like many people today being homosexual is a challenge; Frank knows the pain and is helping people
