NFPA 704 has some advantage and disadvantage to the fire service when it comes to Hazardous material incidents. The advantages to the NFPA 704 is the diamond is quick and easy to read. The disadvantages to the NFPA 704 is it only addresses the immediate harm from the chemical, ignoring any long-term hazards, it provides no detail about the type of harm or precautions, and a strong corrosive can get the same rating as something that is very toxic to eat or breathe.
