Teaching Civic Welfare Training Service in the School of

University of the Philippines Diliman
Magsaysay Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City, 1101 Philippines jcvalmeda@yahoo.com Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS) is one of the three program components of the
National Service Training Program (NSTP) established under Republic Act 9163. CWTS covers programs or activities that will add improvement to the common wellbeing for members of the community or its facilities. It aims to instill among the students: citizenship, volunteerism, and career exploration and development. All students of the University of the Philippines need to complete two semesters of CWTS as a requirement for graduation if the student selected this as his or her choice of NSTP component.
The teacher has to inculcate to the students that, being scholars of the country, they have to volunteer their service not only to the people but also to the country. This is to show appreciation for the people’s support for their quality tertiary education. Thus, there is integration of civic and social values in the course. What makes teaching CWTS challenging and exciting is that the teacher incorporates statistics in the volunteer work that the students will do. Hence, the teacher prepares the students to do statistical work needed by the public and makes them aware of the different paths they can take in their respective careers. CWTS in the School of Statistics
Each college in the University of the Philippines has a free hand in the implementation of a selected program component of NSTP as long as it follows its program concept. The three program components are
Reserve Officer’s Training Corps, Civic Welfare Training Service, and Literacy Training Service. The

Nstp-Cwts Reaction Paper

...ZEID BSA 1-A NSTP: CWTS REACTION PAPER The National Service Training Program, also referred to by the acronym NSTP, is a civic administration and defense preparedness program for Filipino tertiary education students. It is instituted by the Government of the Philippines on January 23, 2002 by virtue of Republic Act 9163, otherwise known as the "National Service Training Program (NSTP) Act of 2001". And one of the coverage of the program is the Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS). This program component is designed to provide students with activities contributory to the general welfare and betterment of life of the members of the community especially those developed to improve social welfare services. As I selected CWTS for the first and second semester, I learned a lot from this course. The activities and seminars really change my point of view. At first, I thought CWTS is only about voluntary works, like cleaning in the streets but that is not at all. The class sessions and seminars taught me how practical experiences and theoretical knowledge would come into handy in the real life. But it doesn’t stop there, because there is this program that was currently introduced to us which were tutorials on some things that serve us our practice in preparation for the future use. With the things mentioned even by slowly, I improved myself physically, mentally, spiritually and socially. This program is really helpful to the students and youth. It does not...

History of Nstp

...Service Training Program was also known as "An Act Establishing the National Service Training Program (NSTP) for Tertiary Level Students, Amending for the Purpose Republic Act No. 7077 and Presidential Decree no. 1706, and for other Purposes" or Republic Act No. 9163. It was signed into law in January 23, 2002 amidst the various calls of dissenting sectors for its abolition or reform. It invoked the constitutional provision regarding the "duty of the state to serve and protect its citizens," specifically Article II (Declaration of Principles and State Policies), Section 2, which states that "The prime duty of the government is to serve and protect the people. The government may call upon the people to defend the state, and in fulfillment thereof, all citizens may be required under conditions provided by law, to render personal military or civil service" (italics supplied). This is the same principle that created and sustained the Reserve Officers Training Corps. The primary objective of the NSTP law is to promote the role of the youth in nation-building. As such, it aims to encourage the youth to become civic and/or military leaders and volunteers whom could be called upon by the nation in cases their services are needed. Compared with the ROTC which specializes in military training, and the E-ROTC which granted three options for students yet was limited in implementation, the NSTP law ensured that the three components - Civic Welfare Service, Literacy Training Service, and Reserve...

Introduction to Computer

...GRAPHICS Road  safety Everyday many people are involved in road accidents. Some are killed. Many more are injured or maimed. So it is important for us to learn to use the roads properly and safely. No sane person would like to be involved in an accident. As the roads are very busy nowadays, we should be very careful when crossing one. It is safer to use a pedestrian crossing or an overhead bridge whenever one is available. Never cross a road by dashing across it. That is inviting trouble. If there are no crossings, then we must look carefully right and left and cross only when it is safe to do so. Some of us take the bus to school. It is important that we do not try to get on or off a bus while it is still moving. I tried to get on a moving bus once. It dragged me a short distance and nearly ran over me. I was lucky to escape with only some scratches on my legs. Also we must not fool around while in the bus. A suddenly lurch can send us knocking our heads against something hard. Using a bicycle can be dangerous too. We must pay attention on the road and never cycle too far out to the middle of the road. We must obey all traffic rules. Also we must make sure our bicycles are in good condition with working brakes, lights etc. These are some things we can do to avoid accidents. However there is no guarantee that we will never be involved in one. The important thing is to stay alert at all times while using the roads. We must know what is happening around us. In that way we can...
