NT1110 Computer Structure and Logic

Lab Week: 1

My operating system on my lap top is Windows 7 professional with a service pack 1 installed with the system. The operating system on my pc is very helpful to me and has many different useful features. Some features include HomeGroup, which basically lets you be able to make your files and printer on a home network more private if you didn’t want to share them with other people. There’s Jump Lists, and this helps you access your favorite pictures, songs, websites or documents a lot quicker and makes it less of a hassle. Windows Search is a very helpful feature as well, this feature lets you find virtually anything and everything on your pc that you need easily and instantly. It comes with Windows Taskbar and this feature lets you see icons a lot easier and thumbnail previews and gives you many more ways to customize your computer. There are many more Performance improvements on the Windows 7 Professional, such as faster sleep and resume, less memory needs and quicker USB detection, in my opinion Windows 7 Professional is superior to other operating systems. My laptop is running at 2.60 GHz and has 4.00 GB of RAM on the hard drive. The free disk space on my laptop is 234 GB out of 280 GB. If I wanted to yes I could update my laptop operating system to Windows 8 because it only requires a speed of 1 GHz, 1 GB of RAM and a 20 GB (64-bit) graphics card.

Nt1110 Module-6 Recap Study for Exam

...NT1110: Module 6 Troubleshooting and Networks Final Exam Preparation Recap MODULE 1 Operating Systems There are three main operating systems in use today: Linux: Linux is an open source program available for free. “Open source” means that anyone who has the knowledge can improve the code, add functionality to the code, and modify the code to make it better. The only requirement is that you cannot sell it—you must give away your version for free. Linux is a subset of UNIX and is used more as a server OS than as a client. MAC: MAC has been a favourite of a select group, primarily those creating graphical arts, images, and video. In recent years, the MAC OS has become compatible with Intel processors. This has made the MAC computer system compatible with industry standard software, while the hardware has remained proprietary. The MAC OS commands approximately 8 percent to 15 percent of the OS market, while Linux has around 2 percent. Windows: Windows has approximately 82 percent to 90 percent of the market share. Windows XP is becoming the legacy version of the Windows OS, although it holds about 38 percent of the market share. Windows Vista did not fair too well on its release and now occupies only about 13 percent of the market share, while Windows 7 claims 30 percent of the market share. 1 NT1110: Module 6 Troubleshooting and Networks Final Exam Preparation Recap MODULE 2 Input and Output Devices I/O ports are primarily located on the back of...

Identifying the Operating System

...Identifying the Operating System * NT1110 Module 1 My home computer is a new Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series. It has the Windows 7 edition with a Service Pack 1. The Windows 7 edition brings a more responsive and lively feel, and the start menu is just right. With this edition, Microsoft has also recognized the need for improved desktop responsiveness, which gives the impression that the computer is responding to the user and that they are in control. Compatibility on Windows 7 is definently far better than that of Vista. And many programs that were used on Windows XP did not work immediately and required updates, but with Windows 7 almost all applications that work on Vista should still run. In this regard, Windows Vista has definently paved the way for Windows 7. Lower hardware requirements is also a plus for Windows 7 because due to the reputation that Vista gained, making the more sophisticated hardware seem rather ordinary, will run well on lower end hardware, making the transition from Windows XP less painful. Windows 7 also has an improved search tool, which now rivals Mac OS X’s spotlight to be able to find what you need quickly and easily. For example, typing a word in the start menu will display it and split it up neatly into files, folders and applications, or typing “keyboard” will bring up the keyboard options within the control panel. Taskbar options are a lot more powerful since Vista. The taskbar icons are now larger and items are grouped together...

...NT1110 Mr. Khan Nicole Snyder Kat Genovesio STORAGE DEVICES Installing a new hard drive requires creating partitions, formatting partitions before installing operating system. Hard drives are comprised of platters, have read/write heads on top and bottom for each platter. Since they are coated with magnetic film, which contain the bits, they should never be exposed to a magnet as it may result in data loss. Hard drives and gilded to protect their data, but floppy disks are not. The BIOS can be flashed to upgrade the system. The cable connectors may also be color coded, blue goes into motherboard (regardless of primary or secondary), black goes to first device and grey is second device. The jumpers on the drive determine the master/slave designation. The hard drive should be installed as master on the primary cable, other devices should be second to improve performance.
