I am going to explain the components of a network that are required in order for a computer to operate in a network. The network consist of the OSI 7 layers which I will explain later and a range of different components. Such as, Bridge, Router, DSL modem, Switch, Network interface card also known as NIC and finally the Hub.

Firstly, I am going to briefly explain what a bridge is. A bridge is a component that connects a local area network also known as LAN, to another local area network using the same protocol such as the Ethernet or even a token ring. The bridge is a device that determines if a message is required to transmit or not. A bridge identifies each and every message on a LAN, and pass those similar messages in the same LAN and forwarding …show more content…
First one is the Broadband Routers and the other one is the Wireless Routers. Routers in general takes information that is travelling through your broadband signal by a modem, identifies it and then sends it to your computer. The router also chooses the fastest and safest route for the data packet so that we can receive the information without delay. The Broadband Router can connect two different computers to the internet. The Wireless Routers are used in almost every homes in today's society. It connects to the modem which creates a wireless signal at home or in the office so that any computers in its radius could connect to the wireless router and use the internet for …show more content…
Telephone network initially did not intend to carry data at high speeds, but was only built to carry our voices by turning our voices into an electrical signal whereas the modem then converts the digital signals into an audio signal that can be carried through a phone line. The restriction of the phone line means that the fastest it could carry the signal is roughly 56Kbps. The DSL comes in handy when encountering this problem. It carries the digital signals directly without converting much of the signal. It has three advantages. The three are that it uses a higher data than the normal modems, the connectivity is always on making it easy for you. It is also cost efficient and saves the time used for calling the ISP. It also splits the connection because of the copper wire, allowing you to use your phone while using the internet.

Fourthly, a switch is component of the computer network in which it connects two network together or two network devices. The function of the switch is to receive information from any source connected to it and carry that information to the destination only. It differentiates switches from hubs. I will explain more about hub at the sixth point. Network switches are similar to network hubs, but a switch is more intelligent than a hub.
